  1. DIY.

Get Belden Brilliance Video cable - 1694A or 1695A. Get quality connectors on both, maybe Canare true 75ohm types.

If it's good enough for the studio to use, it's good enough for you. Sturdy as hell and one of the best on the market.

With Monster cables you are paying for the name, and after sales support. And slick packaging. And their even slicker marketing. And for that price, you can make about maybe 4 sets of Belden cable 1.5m with top quality connectors.

You should be able to do this in SLS - second or third floor, in one of the 'corners', there is a shop with spools of cable. They will custom make for you and crimp it professionally. Alternatively there is a Belden seller in SLT, 4th floor I think. Remember to get them to crimp, and have the crimping done with Canare tools.

    Hi Adhoc,

    Thanks for your valuable input/info.

btw, your girl in the avatar right?

  2. Everybody knows the music lover. Just someone who enjoys his/her music. The audiophile group can be divided into 2 sub-groups :-

    1. The primarily music lover who also pursues the highest fidelity of audio reproduction to take him deeper into the music/into the performance (or the other way) but the music is still more important. Some of these audiophiles might even be musicians themselves. The musical performance is more important than the quality of the recording itself.

    2. The audiophile with only 10 CDs mostly made up of stuff like demo discs, drum discs, etc and change equipment every now and then. They don't listen to music, they listen to equipment. "Which power cord sounds better" is more important that "Who's a better singer". 1950s analog mono recordings probably won't cut it for them.

The same segregation also happens in the photography circles, we got one group of people who are more interested in taking good photos, and the other group who is more interested to discuss whether Nikon or Canon is better, which lens is better, and shoots only test charts. :P

    Regards

    CK

From my limited knowledge of local audiophiles(home visit), quite a number of them belongs to 2. One of the case is that the owner has a $100K+ MBL setup in a customized listening rm and guess what? The owner got about 50+ of CDs(at least half of them are copied CDR). :))

  3. Hi, any one would like to recommend their fav bookshelf speakers, suitable for bedroom, either active or passive? Budget is below S$1000 but prefer to be about S$500+.

    Hi Heady,

Get a used pair of dyn contour 1.1, should be below $1k. The problem is that it was discontinued and they are now very hard to come by in the 2nd hand market. I have heard the Dyn Focus series also, but personally think that it is not as good as the old dyn contour.

  4. after getting into this head-fi stuff, I'm quickly counting the cost of the hobby - of course its worth it ;)

just wondering though, if this high end stuff is catching on in singapore for modern cans e.g. GS-1000,ATH-W5000, stax omegas or even the exotic ones e.g, K1000, HE900, HE60, amps etc....

are there any "meets" organized locally ?

    Hi metalgear,

I think it is catching up as more and more people aware of this hobby, thanks to the internet. Also need to thanks some enterprising local suppliers like SE and Jaben who bring in some hard to find and hard to reach eqpt. Their effort cannot be dismissed.

I believe there is mini-meet off and on among forumers.

    :cans:

  5. Seriously video is not as sensitive as compare to audio for cable... Maybe my TV sucks thats why i cant tell a different between a $8 one and a $100++ monster cable  I didnt try the above mentioned brands before anyway.. :P

Oh...can I interpret your reply as that not only you have not tried the brands that I have mentioned, your have not try the monster either and you have stated "Seriously video is not as sensitive as compare to audio for cable" is what you have assumed that it is such? The assumption which the statement arrives, is due to you think your TV is suck?

Anyway, thanks for your suggestion to look at alternative other than those branded items. I'm thinking of trying Belden 1694A. Any other forumers have experience on it? Thanks. :D

  6. Was looking for this model in Singapore, and couldn't find it anywhere. Was recommended it by the headfiers for its low cost and extra bonuses (SACD playback, which is not essential to me).

Is there anywhere that it is available. Took a trip down to Sim Lim Square, but all I asked didn't stock up on this model (admittedly though, I didn't search every shop). Wanted to order online, but mum didn't really like the idea of doing so (potential problem with player and shipping hassle).

Otherwise, what other alternatives are there. Budget <SGD300. Not really much preference on the sonic signature, but would like it to have a decent redbook output. SACD or DVD-A would be nice, but not important. How much does the Cambridge Audio Azur 340C cost in Singapore?

    Thanks for the help...

What do you guys think of the Oppo 970?

Seems to be rather well liked at its price point...

Will probably pair it off with a K501 or K601. Ampless currently, but will get one eventually.

    Hi Xp,

One more vote to the OPPo 970. Play some SACDs with it also when you audition it at X audio.

  7. I will be considering to do future MO for people here since some things can really be cheaper abroad, furthermore I can even provide local warranty. But since I'm overloaded with work lately, I'll probably do any MO later.

Meanwhile, feel free to give any suggestions.

    Cheers..

    Aron

    Hi Aron,

Thanks for your initiative and effort! This is rare especially among the common skeptics and pessimists on the net.

I've visited SE and saw the HPs audition/testing section...tt is more like an HP enthusiast's den. :))

Let us know your plan for MO.
