  1. Check the values of R2 through R6. Make sure they match up nicely. It appears that your front end is the problem. If all lines up then you probably have an issue with either the input fets or C1 through C4 (check that they are not damaged).

  2. hi, sorry for bumping old thread.

is mogami 2534 available in SLT or SLS? i wanna buy some..

No, not quite. Well Audio *might* have some but the pricing is significantly higher. Visit team108's (distributor) website for their address and head down to get the cable. They're located at Tannery Lane (near Macpherson).

  3. Here's a tip for working with casting epoxy: hair-dryer.

The heat causes the air in the bubbles to expand and they will rise to the surface and pop. My buddy and I used to use lighters to achieve the same effect (but for flat cast items).

For something like that, use a hair dryer instead.

On the note of the mould, go get mould release wax (should be available from art friends too). Then the epoxy won't stick to the mould and you won't need to clean residues off with spirit.

  4. Hrmm.. That's an inverting configuration which can, on a simple design like this, sound much better than the non-inverting equivalent.

As for the LED, calculations need to be made for the LED's Vf and the resistor value changed accordingly.

Also, note that the Vf limits how low the battery voltage can drop before the V-gnd swings to the top rail.

It might be better to simply implement an inexpensive opamp as a unity gain buffer to drive the virtual ground.

The opamp presents a high impedance to the resistor ladder and that prevents the mid-point from fluctuating too much since the current fluctuations through the ladder is minimized greatly as opposed to charging/ discharging the capacitors directly.

Alternatively, a simple transistor configured as an emitter-follower would also do well to isolate the ladder from the current fluctuations of the capacitors charge/ discharge.

  5. It is correct. The 2 LM317's are not configured as voltage regulators. They are configured as Constant Current sources.

Hence, by calculation, each of them are sinking 1.25v/( (15*20)/(15+20) ) = 0.146A.

Therefore, instead of driving the filament with a fixed voltage and obtaining the current flow by the resistance of the filament, both current sources sink nearly 0.3A together through the filament.

This negates the need for a separate voltage source/ regulation for the filament.

A regulated supply connected across the filaments would stabilized at a fixed current after warming up but this design allows for regulated current through the filament regardless of the voltage supply.

  6. It has been almost 5 years since I've first joined SG Headphones and looking at the Jaben saga and on dealer-sponsored forums issue, I kinda miss the good old days.

Here are some stuff that I can recall.

The website was first started by Adrian, aka ablaze, presumably on the 20th Jan 2003. I recall his rave then was his Sony CD3000 and EarMaxPro amp. He would purchase something and then realise he actually wanted something else.

Then, there are the helpful souls that are always willing to help out the noobs. Clarence, aka Mackie, Rameish and N@z, thanks for all the advices! Sadly, Mackie had chosen to leave the scene, I kinda miss talking to him.

The first gathering, AFAIK, was at AMK Ave 1, location sponsored by a kind soul whose nick I just can't recall. There were like 15 of us whom brought along CDPs, amps and headphones. That was fun!!!

The second gathering was organised by Ben and held at Singapore Poly's clubhouse (or something like that). More people joined in this time, with N@z and matbonn flying over from Brunei and naturally, more stuff to see and hear. It was fantastic, except for the fact that we ran short of power sockets!

I can't seem to recall the rest though. Everyone, please feel free to chip in and share your thoughts and memories.

P.S. I starting this thread as I'm really free and have nothing to do at hand.

I was kinda guilty of dragging Adrian into the headphones thing actually.. Lol.. Knew him from before that when we participated in other local computing forums.

The first gathering was actually at Rameish's place.

The 2nd was at AMK at Pipee's brother's place.

3rd meet was at Singapore Poly Guildhouse courtesy of Mr Leng.

  7. Are the grey Beyer earpads washable? I bought a DT931 from Mackie 4 yrs ago, and the grey color is now closer to brown. :yuck: I'm thinking of just dumping the ear pads into the washing machine, but afraid of what might happen. Anyone tried washing their earpads before?

The cans still sound great though, lusher and less harsh compared to when I first bought them. The weak point for me is the bass. Anyone still using DT931 in the forum here?

I also just ordered a set of 2mth-old Audio Technica ATH-ANC7 noise cancelling phones from headfi at US$90 (shipped to my bro in the US). What a steal! Mostly for use when I travel, but I wonder how it will compare to the DT931 at home?

You can buy replacement pads from Hung Brothers. They're about $40 a pair. Ask for the DT770/ 801/ 831/ 901/ 511 pads if they don't seem to know about the 931 pads. They're essentially the same but most retailers don't stock the pads listed for 931's.

  8. I'd recommend getting an Alcatel (Thomson) Speedtouch 585. It's a good ADSL(2) modem cum router. The antenna can be replaced for something more powerful if so wished.

On the other hand, you may also consider getting a separate modem + router combo. In which case, I'd recommend using a D-Link DGL-4300. It's an extremely versatile (I'd say overkill as well) router considering that it's for consumers.

It has the capability to adjust the wireless power fed into the antenna and uses a fairly common RP-SMA connector for it's external antenna (it does have an internal antenna too) so you may upgrade the antenna if need be.

You might also wish to consider the Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 high power router or it's non-HP brother. Both are capable routers at fairly low cost.

As for the modem, I can't say I can recommend any but I'd avoid Linksys (ADSL2 ME), Prolink (Hurricane 6000 series) and Aztech (DSL 600EU).

  9. Anyone going later? Could use some help buying memory cards. PM me.

OOps... Too late.. Didn't see your post... :P

But the Twinmos offerings are really good... $119 for either 4GB 150X SD card or 4GB 140X CF card... But the SD card was out of stock at their head office though..

  10. How bad is bad? I simply don't think it's that bad in S'pore ie, not unless you hear crackling sound through your sound system whenever the fluorscent light is turned on. This happens in old buildings but a power filter/conditioner will not totally rectify this problem.

Actually... Even in newer HDB flats, you can hear the pop when someone switches a light on or off.. That's regardless of whether you're on the same FCB or otherwise. On seperate FCB's, the pop is much softer bu it's still there.

So far, I've not discern any difference between having a power conditioner and not having one. I do have a dedicated line run into my room for my head-fi stuff though.
