  1. Distortion sometime caused by clipping, when the supply voltage is too low, or too low for the op-amp to work properly, or sometime when the op-amp cannot supply enough current to the driver.

Try to increase the supply voltage, like using 2x 9 volt batteries, or try other op-amp that has higher output power.

  2. Both have different sound signature.

HD25-II is lively, with good detail & clarity. Pretty good bass as well. Compared with SRH840, HD25-II is brighter, more forward presentation, like you sit very close to the stage. Very durable construction, especially if you carry your headphones with you when traveling.

SRH840 is sweet & smooth, with excellent imaging, maybe one of the best in it's price category for imaging. A bit laid back presentation, like you sit a few rows behind the stage. When compared them both (I have SRH840 and happened to have HD25-II for a few weeks) you will immediately hear that SRH840 is smoother sounding than HD25-II, and HD25-II will sound a bit aggressive. Bass in SRH840 is different than HD25-II, if you like bass that makes you toe tapping, HD25-II is better. SRH840 bass is quite proportional, but not very engaging. SRH840 has good tonal balance (just a bit midrange centric), smooth sound, and excellent imaging. I use it for sound editing of my recording.

For traveling I choose HD25-II, for sound editing I choose SRH840.

    My2cents, hope it helps :)

  3. Actually, it isn't as hard to drive as what some people might make it out to be. I use the HDP to drive it at the moment and it can actually get to ear-splitting levels as is.

I'm looking forward to receiving the Audio-GD NFB10 soon tho, to really see if i can drive the HE-6s to it's "full" potential if it hasn't already been reached.

What I mean by "difficult to drive" is not about volume, but more on the midrange and bass 'tightness'. High gain amp might sounds loud enough, but if it doesn't have enough current and control, the low mid and bass sound less tight and controlled.

It looks like Audio Gd NFB-10 should be powerful enough for HE6 :)

Please share your impression once you paired them :D

  4. M50s anyone? You don't need to spend a fortune to achieve good sound! :))

    x2 :D Always love my old ATH-M50 :)

If you can find shop that sell Superlux, you may try Superlux HD681, cost only about SGD 50, but sound quality can compete any full size headphone 3-4 times it's price :)

  5. Wow! Very impressive picture! Your HE-5 LE looks almost identical to my HE-6s! And i'm glad to hear you're really digging the vocal presentation from the Orthos!

It looks pretty similar indeed, but sound wise your HE6 is better, better tonal balance than my HE5-LE :) I tried HE6 last week & like the tonal balance, much better than HE5-LE. But HE6 is also much harder to drive, need a large current amplifier to drive it properly.

Anyone looking for excellent condition HE5-LE ? :P

  6. I made some extensive search on Grado RA1 and to my surprise, the parts used in RA1 are dirt cheap. I read an old post from this forum that there is a guy (not to mention name) used to sell the parts for a small fee.

Appreciate if anyone in this forum could guide me through in getting the parts for RA1 clone. Thank You.

You may walk around Sim Lim Tower, and get all the parts there. For Op-Amp, you can try Federal at SLT 2nd floor. Other parts are common in SLT.

  7. :rclxub:Hi guys i would like to know from you guys that if compare the IEM of westone and shure let say UM3X with SE530 which is better overall ?

For me, personally I prefer UM3X, but it is also depend on what tips used on the UM3X. I tried 2 different silicon tips, and a foam comply tips, they all make UM3X sounds very different. I don't like the white silicon tip, it is too hard, and UM3X sounds dull with it. The Westone 3 grey silicon makes UM3X sounds very nice, but mid bass a bit recessed, not enough punch. But good low bass. The comply foam makes the UM3X sounds midrange centric, thick and warm midrange, very different than the grey silicon.

So, again, the tip plays a great role for UM3X sound :)

SE530 sounds a bit muddy to me, too much midrange, not enough high clarity.

    My2cents :)

  8. The V-jays seems to be a Not So Popular choice most would recommend, but it sure is a ultra light portable GOOD sounding headphones.

V-Jays is a new model, just released last year if I'm not wrong, so, not yet popular because it is new, not many people have it yet. :)

For example, model like PortaPro already in the market for more than 25 years :D

  9. Since you posted in portable section, I assume you are looking for portable not full size headphones.

For portable headphones, I recommend V-Jays or Tracks AIAIAI. I have compared them with Koss PortaPro LE, and they sound better, more natural, lively, with more bass and treble extension.

While V-Jays is a very good all-rounder, for vocal and acoustic instruments, I prefer Tracks AIAIAI.

You can read my friend review here:

    http://www.headfonia.com/?p=4537

Or if you are looking for IEM, you may try Superlux HD381F and Hippo Shroom. HD381F has thicker mid and better bass, while Hippo Shroom is excellent in clarity and instruments separation.

  10. Having owned T1 for a while, i find it overall thinner sounding than HD800, mids aren't as good. Overall very transparent/clear sounding, think is due to a boost in certain treble frequency, but it doesn't give sibilance as often as HD800 on not so gd recordings.

Yup, T1 is not so fabulous for vocal, especially when paired with thin sounding amp. The mid high and treble is very nice for those who likes clarity and transparency, but low mid and bass need a few dB boost.

For vocal I prefer my Hifiman HE5 LE :beyer:

The ortho sounds for vocal is very seductive

FYI, the right K340 is not ortho, it is electrostatic + dynamic drivers, I just took the picture together with the Orthos.

The left one is Yamaha HP1, and the center is the HE5 LE.

  11. I do really want to know how it sound compare to HD800, through audition.

It seems there's still no distributor bring it in to Singapore yet..

Stay tune with Headfonia, as there will be comparison with HD800, hopefully next week

  12. Thanks to my friend Mike from Headfonia who has loan me his Beyerdynamic T1 for almost 3 weeks!

T1 has excellent detail, and sounds very rich from low bass to top octave. Mid and high is very clear and transparent.

Although it tends to sound bright, but it can reveal recording character very well. With Sara K albums, No Cover & Made in the Shade, T1 sounds right, not bright, just nice.

Bass sounds rich & sufficient, but basshead might ask for more.

  13. I've got the Superlux HD660. Out of the box, I'm quite disappointed, tonal balance dominant on the midrange area, with rather too soft treble, and a so so bass, the bass was there but not fun at all.

After about more than 50 hours (frankly I forget how long, it was a few days, maybe more than 3 days), the sound improved, the midrange even though still a bit dominant, but now sounds much more balanced. The bass is nicer now, bigger, more balance with the midrange, and the treble also sounds more sparkling. Overall tonal balance is quite musical now.

Detail and clarity is fine, but ATH-M50 is better. Somehow I can hear like the plastic ear-cups colored the midrange :( Maybe need to modified this cans, put some damping material to reduce plastic ear-cups coloration.

But overall, for the price, it sounds alright, quite musical and smooth sounding, with enough bass :) The vocal is quite nice, but those plastic ear-cups coloration need to be fixed.

My friend is going to lend me Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro, will see how they compare :D
