  1. Testing is the trick, eh? Next time I write anything maybe I should say "I listened to xyz", not "I tested xyz". But euphemisms aside, I think listening really is the only thing. You might get one impression today, and a different impression next week. I hate to admit it, but I've gone back and read some of what I wrote, and said to myself "Self, you shoulda said that differently." So maybe the ultimate trick is just try things once, then again later, and again later than that. But it's hard to do if something is on loan, or you're listening at the store.

This is very correct with really good equipment and even with equipment that does not quite approach high end. I think the human is the biggest variable.....it is with me depending on how I feel I hear things differently at times and it makes it hard to know whether one is better than another. Bottom line find something you enjoy and live with it...until you find something else later that you enjoy better while it may not be better you may have changed over a period of time to enjoy something else. New is not always better but the newness may present itself as better after living with one type of sound for a while.

  2. Here is another thread comparing these two amps:

    another thread of interest:

    http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f5/headamp-p...-hybrid-328479/

My quick initial impressions back and forth between the two is that the TTVJ is slightly smoother than the Pico but the Pico is not at all not smooth, if you can understand this your better than me. As I said I think we over here may very small differences much bigger than they actually are. The biggest issue with the TTVJ is using it as a real portable. It will ping if handled a little less than gingerly. The Pico is simply an overall winner in my book. It has a great DAC for when I want to use it with my computers.

Both are winners but I think the Pico would be a better/safer overall choice from my perspective.

I hope this short comparison with the associated treads help you.

  3. I liked the Pico DAC a lot when I heard it during a previous meet. Very impressive indeed. Could you do a quick comparison of the TTVJ and the Pico with the ESW10? Please... :)

I just got everything out of my briefcase and am now listening to my Pico with the 10s. First off is a little jazz singer named Renee Olstead, one of my favorites is her rendition of Summertime. Any specific genre you are interested in. I may not have everything but I have a lot. The source that I am using is my iMod.

While I am doing this today check this thread out about the little dot portable.

    http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f105/review-...plifier-284847/

I notice that someone suggested the little dot was a little bright so I am not sure this would be a good mix if they were talking about the tube version. I am not always sure which unit people are speaking about.

  4. I'm kind of alright with the treble amount on the ESW10, perhaps because I've been trained by the RS1. Though what I really want is a lusher sound, with vocals a tad more forward. It might be time to try the Pico again. :D

That Little Dot tube amp is be something you might want to test out. I think tubes in smoothing things out just a little provide that lushness you are seeking. I have the Pico and it does a great job with them though. I can't say anything bad about the Pico. I am getting the DAC version soon as well. This way I will be feeding a straight signal from my Dell Mini9 via Pico DAC into the TTVJ.

  5. Are you referring to the little dot portable tube amp?

Yes, I think that is the one.

I do agree that ESW10 has a little to much treble energy. Presently I use a Acoustic Revive QR-8 on it's plug and it remove this problem as well as adding more volume, dynamic and tighten the bass. Love it so much now.

What am I missing here with the reference of these isolators to the ESW10JPN?

  6. The TTVJ Millet Hybrid is very interesting, just that I'm really not someone to buy something just on leap of faith. That, and I'm very aware of the Head-fi hype monster. Just look at the UM3X thread, and the HD800 thread.

Any chance you will be visiting Singapore soon, slwiser? :)

Sorry, I hardly ever leave my local town area...much less out of my country...

Yes, I know about our hype monster....I have fallen into that myself at times.

My problem is that I enjoy most things at some level and have a hard time being really hard on a device. Our hype mostly is to make really big mountains out of small mole-hills. Hence, my being so hesitate to come down on a piece of equipment just because it is slightly less in something compared with another device.

I much more like doing comparisons and saying which I enjoyed more and why. I gave my reasons why I believe that the TTVJ portable will match well with the ESW10JPN. The ESW10JPN will sound great out of just about anything. To me the 10 has just a little to much treble energy and a tube amp or at least the ones that I have used with it, tend to tone that back or smooth that out to me.

There is another small portable tube amp out there somewhere that I have seen but have never heard it...I think it is from your area of the world and would be cheaper than the TTVJ...

  7.

I listened to the Earmax (normal ed), and was pretty wowed by the tube sound. Not only do vocals sound ultra smooth and warm, instrumentals also came out "right". Overall quite impressed with this little guy.

That is the reason why I got my TTVJ Millet Hybrid portable. I have a Yamamoto HA-02 and the sound out of the ESW10JPN with them was stunning. So I thought maybe if I got a portable tube amp this would allow me to have the best of both worlds and I think it does a great job with the 10s. Not the same as the HA-02 but very well. My future work setup is going to include the TTVJ and a Pico DAC out of my Dell Mini9. I will be listening to either the ESW10JPN or my pre-paid Ultrasone Edition 8s when they come in. This will put my work setup as near to my home dynamic setup as I can get without having the HA-02 at work.

  8. I am looking forward to the new Ultrasone Edition 8 which just might do the trick as a portable and a nice home headphone while being closed.

But either the ATH-ESW9 or ESW10JPN would also be in consideration. I know they are smaller and somewhat tight new but they do loosen up and are fairly closed inside to out. They do allow sound in more than out. I have had both and still own the ESW10JPN.

  9. On a side note. I tried the ESW10 with a TUBE desktop amp. The details were sparkling and bass was very warm. I think I clocked in a min of 4 hours listening as paired with an IMOD and some sonic caps the ESW10 was great on a tube!

Anyone else can share their thought on a desktop pairing with the ESW10. :cans:

At my desk I pair it with my Yamamoto HA-02 and this is the pair that made me get the TTVJ Portable Millet Hybrid as my portable for the ESW10JPN. The pairing of tubes with the ESW10JPN has some great synergy in my opinion.

  10. So how does it sound as compared to the Edition9 ?

It's limited edition in how many pcs worldwide ?

Is it easy to drive ( portability ) & what is the size of the adapter ?

Looked tempting to buy as Stereo are giving some freebies.

    Thanks.

The UE9 is very different but i have to say that I do enjoy the ESW10JPN almost or maybe as well. I have not sit down and directly made a comparison but the UE9 seems to give a stronger sound than the ESW10JPN. The ESW10JPN gives a sense of more clarity but I am sure that this is not true. It may be that the UE9's bass is just more powerful than the ESW10JPN which is to be expected.

I read that they have about 1500 pieces worldwide with 1000 of that for Japan.

Yes, easy to drive. Much of my listening is with the iBasso Boa. The plug is the small one.

For the price it is a steal compared with the UE9 in my opinion even though I plan on keeping both.

  11. I think the sound is clearer than the ESW9s. Someone here said they are muck like a closed Grado RS-1. The JPN is great for Rock or anything actually, very enjoyable. The JPNs sound image is much better and more precise. I would suggest that the sound image is not as large are the W5000 but more precise. I learned that the size of the sound image is not everything if you get better imaging as I got from my Ultrasone Edition 9s. No muddiness from the bass but my late model ESW9 was better than the early model ESW9 in this instance. I expect my ESW10JPN will become more musical the more listen to it. I have almost as much enjoyment out of these ESW10JPNs as my UE9. They are tight on my head right out of the box as for fit. Their lightness on my head is great. They weigh in at 170g. The cord seems to be the say as the ESW9s. It comes with two small pouches. One to fit the headphone in and the other to hold the cable. It appears the smaller cable is to be used to hold the cable and plug so that the plug does not come in contact with the beautiful wood ear cups. This is a good insurance. Some here wonder for the price why AT did not provide their hard case with it.

I love my music and it has fast become one of my three favorite cans. With the Ultrasone Edition 9 and Stax SR-007MkII being in the mix.

  12. I have had one of these for about two weeks now. I also have the ESW9 to compare. I have had two ESW9s an early model and a late model. The late model ESW9 is better than the early model in my opinion. The ESW10JPN is even better than the late model 9. The 10 is simply more precise and clear having no hint of muddy sound. The instrument location is more precise and overall a great sound.

  13. This is the Stax, the SR-007MkII, that I have. I also have a KGSS with black gates built by Justin of Headamp to power these. The first couple of months these were very much a reference sound then they started taking on a more musical side that they had not had. These now are my best headphones, even better than my beautiful sounding Ultrasone Edition 9s.

But for the money I could just as easy take a ATH-ESW10JPN using my Yamamoto HA-02 amp than normally powers my UE9.

These three headphones are very good and very different.

  14. I have owned the ESW9 and now own the Triple.Fi. Both are very good phones. The ESW9 has one limitation that I thought with the right amp the Triple.Fi cleared up. That is the bass on the ESW9 gets a bit congested with the right tracks while with the iQube amp the Triple.Fi is very clear with everything. The Triple.Fi also needs the right amp. With the Xin Reference it was to warm for me so the iQube entered the picture and cleared that up.

The ESW9 sounds very much like a good AT headphone. The Triple.Fi sounds nearer the Sennheiser sound as far as I am concerned..

    Just one opinion.

  15. wat is the vol u use on the i-qube when listening to the 780s? wat is ur source, dat would also play apart in the sound

I just listen to the 780s using my iQube and iMod 5.5g with the Super Cotton docking cable.

The volume that I would listen to is about 9-10 on a clock dial while using the lower gain setting.

  16.

Let me know once how it sounds after your burn-in of the i-qube :D

That is great. Looking forward for your impression on iQube and ALO-HFI780. I personally feel that they are sound good and i like it when the iQube set to high gain.

I got my iQube today. I have been listening to it for a couple of hours. This amp really sounds neutral and that is exactly what I was after. It has all the clarity and precision required for my Ultrasone headphones. Makes me wonder why I have the home amps that I do but I enjoy them as well.

But they do the job as well on my warmer Ultimate Ear Triple.Fi Pro 10. Another great match.

There is something to be said about neutral in that it becomes a universal amp as long as you have good equipment surrounding it. Otherwise, it will reveal any short comings.

  17. Yamamoto HA-02 and it sounds great. Very enjoyable. I also have a setup with the Edition 9 and the Yamamoto HA-02.

I should have an iQube by Monday or Tuesday and then I will be able to see how they work with these. I have a Triple.Fi Pro 10 that I want to mate with the iQube. I think the iQube will do a better job with it than the Xin Reference beta that I have now. The Reference is more tuby and sounds great but the Triple.Fi is a bit to warm with the Reference.

  18. Back in post five I noted that I had the iCans and the Proline 2500. These have gone now. I have gotten the HFI-780 and have had it recabled by Ken at ALOaudio.com with his Jenna 18g wire. To compare the UE9 to the HFI-780 from my perspective the best way is to note that I had a second UE9 on back order when I got the HFI-780s. Once I heard these I was so satisfied that I canceled my order for the second pair of UE9s and took the money difference and purchase a second Lavry DA10. Now with the recabled it is even better to listen too. Not exactly the same as the UE9 but very very good.
