  2. Hi all,

Thanks for your response. I just couldn't resist and went down to Music By Design to try out the Grados this evening.

In the end, I bought a Grado SR60 instead. It just seems to have a warmer sound as compared to the SR80 and SR125 (not that the rest are bad)...

And what people are saying about the Grados are true....I really had a 'Wow' experience listening to the SR60 for the first time connected to my MP3 player....It sure beats my old Sennheiser by a mile...

    congrats laugh.gif

    another grado fan wink.gif

  3. these are generally the tracks i use whenever i audition earphones/headphones/speakers/hifi setups...

    Mids/vocals

Amanda McBroom - Crimes of the heart, Ghost in this house, Baby (beatbox)

Alison Kraus & Union Station -> variety of tracks, silky voice, picked acoustic guitar melodies, mandolin + double bass

Carole King - variety of tracks

    Pure Digital music

Don dorsey - rage over a lost penny, moonlight sonata 3rd movement (pure synthesizer music, digitally produced pure sound, no microphone usage)

    Electronic music + vocal

Pole folder - abrasions (clean low pulsating bass notes, good test for positioning of speakers)

pole folder - fall in violet (clean vocals with blend of heavy background electronic beats/bass, often easily muddied if speakers dont represent them well)

    piano dynamics

opus 4.1 - track 4, steinway D piano, played heavily, helps to keep un-desired piano-clanginess in check

    timbre & stage

opus 4.1 - track 1, wind ensemble in a church, airy and space filling

hugo records - great gate at kiev (nearly killed a pair of speakers with the dynamics of this song.. tweeter started buzzing :/)

hugo records - broken zither string (this guy was playing a zither during recording, halfway, string snapped, and the string's wooden bridge dropped)

    Percussion

Sheffield labs - Percussion test disc, track 2 -> electric bass + percussion, to determine distinction when bass guitar plays at a pitch very close to percussion bass drum

track 5,6, pure percussion recording on specially selected drumsets.. most earphones failed me at track 5 and 6, due to the inability to achieve the desired bass drum depth

anyone mind sharing what they use to audition as well?

need to add to my collection laugh.gif

    thanks

  4. Lol. When to audition both cans today. The PX200 provided no isolation, or just didn't fit my head no matter what angle I turned it. Also noticed the lack of bass. The padding, I feel, is a bit too light, that's why there's not enough isolation.

Tempted to buy the cool looking ATH-EM7 from Audiotechnica, but costs a bomb. Also cannot test. So I decided to go for the 69 buck AKG. First impressions are that the bass is VERY noticable, quite pronounced. The mids and especially the highs were a bit muddied. The lows however, were warm and generally sounded good. Isolation's better than I expected, definitely better than the PX200, though it does get uncomfortable after a while because the cans put pressure on the from of the ears. Decided to buy this one instead, and let it burn in to see what happens.

maybe its your ear size tongue.gif

i've much smaller ears, and it does isolate for me a little, and when it traps air, the bass response is there laugh.gif

but i've long retired them didnt really like the sound. smile.gif

  5. Hi all, thanks for the comments. Really appreciate it.

I am trying to keep to a budget of about S$250/-. Any other options besides Grado (i.e. AKG)? I mostly listen to pop (English/Chinese), some jazz....not much classical though.

I saw the earlier postings mentioning Grado SR80...Is the difference in quality between SR80 and SR60 worth the price difference (for pop anyway.....)

the sr80 has a slightly stronger bass response :/

sound stage is pretty.. similar.. at least to my hearing

  6. i have a pair lying around... its.. PRETTY bassy, but does not have my desired depth for bass

the earcushion provides a BIT of isolation, i have a pair lying around dont use them anymore

btw the ear cushion, if you dont use for a few months.. the cushion may dry a bit and the lining will break.. :/ not really replaceable..

  7. marantz!!

i loved my marantz before it died.. it sounds a lot fuller and more forth coming as compared to rotel/denon/sony, the difference is quite distinct actually, i tried running 2 cd players into the same amp, marantz gives a slightly larger output than most other players, no change in vol of amp, a switch of source you can hear the difference pretty much..

when you have a higher budget in time to come you might wish to try out bigger names like krell etc.. which are still out of my budget/reach sad2.gif
