  1. design a pcb and make a kit! p2p is too chim for the bulk of us!
  2. wow this amp is old school. may I ask where you got the case from?
  3. i think you can confirm it in 2 ways, but i might be wrong (1) if you have a 1/4" to mini cable or something like that, you could plug that in, then use a multimeter to test that there's continuity from the RCA - headphone jack. If there is then it's not a connection problem. (2) change the jack! unless it's soldered to the PCB, and I don't think the locking ones can be. it should be fairly straightforward. The other lesson could be to mod parts at your own risk!
  4. can you tell me where i can buy bare runs of the crystal cables?

  6. First off, I have no personal experience with marantz cdps (I own a Cambridge audio 540cv2, which is great but has no headphone out). From what I've read, the cd6002 has had very good reviews and for the price is well worth checking out as an entry-level cdp. I think if you search some of our (very) old posts there are some by previous mods talking about the headphone out of marantz systems. from what I recall I think most people agree that they are very good for the price but of course you can do better with a good headphone amp. nonetheless, it will trash an ipod, and I think your current setup as well. I'd go for a new rather than older model that is no longer manufactured. the technological improvements are more evident in cdps, because they use DAC chips. I suspect some would strongly disagree with this view.
  7. heady! please do a full review comparing with all your sources. would be much appreciated! actually I've already bought the parts from amb but yet to do so for the other parts, but am feeling very lazy. A favourable review might well act as a spur....
  8. many thanks for the review Heady! haven't been active here for awhile....query: what's with the number of usb dacs you own?!?!
  9. can't believe you sold it!!! anyway thanks for the review. i wish i had more time (and $$$) to build another amp, but sadly i think i'm going to have to wait till my retirement (about another 40+ years i think)
  10. looks awesome. what caps are you using? how does it compare to the b22?

    HD600

i'm not surprised that happened. I recently opened my K701 (thinking of doing a diy recable at some point ), and it uses some very high gauge wires which aren't exactly the hardiest.
  12. many thanks for the suggestions everyone
  13. Hi all, could I get some quick advice. what's a good small mp3 player in the market? one that can be used for sport? not looking at ipods. also, is there any 'knowledge bank' websites which review these things in terms of sq? many thanks in advance
  14. i say this at risk of offending you...but your soldering is really ugly! Kudos nevertheless for working without a pcb, which I don't dare to do... it's not just an aesthetic concern; alot of the solder joints look like cold solders - looks like there isn't a good connection in a few of those. also, some of the soldering looks so thick that you might have a situation whereby wires which are not supposed to be touching each other are. Alot of diy problems come from poor soldering, so this might be a good place to start. One suggestion is to use a multimeter and do continuity measurements across all the wires. I found this guide very useful - http://www.amb.org/audio/basic_soldering_tips.pdf
  15. yea still overseas will prob only do any diy work mid-late august. But need to plan in advance... totally agree casework is always the b*tch, but there is some satisfaction in having something cased up nicely.
  16. no la i meant review/comparison of both amps. I also need some encouragement to take out my soldering iron.
  17. you'll probably be the only one in sg with the 2 top diy amps in the market. that should be inspiration enough! waiting for you review of both amps. hehe
  18. no need for that. get a proper pair of PC speakers that connects directly from the lineout and has it's own power supply. These speakers have their own build-in amplifier and will go much louder than the PC, or probably even a headphone amp, can drive it. an example: http://www.bose.com/controller?event=VIEW_...ion_2/index.jsp
  19. i think so...why don't you guys meet up and compare sources. see if it's just him being sensitive or whether his source is poor. another thing you can try is not to play any music (pause it) and to put the volume to the max. If you hear the zzz sound it just means the source is not very good. If you don't hear it then it's coming from the track. Both are normal. OT a little: I've spent almost most of my headfi journey trying to get rid of these irritating zzz sounds. Recently I bought a swanky radio and listen to my ipod through it sometimes. Can't hear any hissing at all even with the worst tracks cos it's so far away! headphones are so high maintainence... http://www.vitaaudio.com/products/vitaaudio-r2.html - highly recommend it if you are living in a small room and want a good radio which you can connect your ipod to
  20. i'm guessing the zzzz sound is somekind of hiss or interference. 2 possibilities 1) it could be his classical tracks are old tracks, whch tend to have some background hiss. But not sure if that's the zzz sound 2) more likely, there is something wrong with either his amp or his source, or if it's a portable player, there's something wrong it the player. If you've tested it with your own player and there's nothing wrong, that means there's nothing wrong with the headphone. Unless maybe he has hypersensitive ears or something...
