  1. i dont know i've been observing it.. the tray mechanism sorta... attempts to spin the cd when i power on.. one small jerk.. and lens movement is perfect :S
  2. lol you know how to repair it? i think the cd tray mechanism the whole assembly is faulty.. replaced once.. with a phillips one.. :S.. now it broke down again
  3. probably headphones would be more damaging than speakers.. no medical evidence on this, but if you compair a regular speaker set-up, the speakers are facing you perpendicular, unlike headphones which drives straight into your ear for the super-aural design (like grados, etc) in this way, energy is more diffused, your ear actually collects the sound, if anyone is familiar with superposition.. blahblahblah sound waves in phase and out of phase and blahblahblah converging to give positional sweet spots.. acoustics of the room affects the wave super-imposing on each other, and generally inclusive of reflections etc one gets larger sonic stage.. this is compared to.. earphones or headphones.. circumaural and superaural designs.. i would bet the circumaurals like beyer dt880s or the senns650 would have a much wider soundstage as compared to grados.. (this is my hypothesis, i've yet to heard the senns :S no $$) grado design is supra aural into the ear channel, thus i guess that was the reason why i found it a little discomforting.. use of earpads from the senns like suggested, helps to convert the earphone to a more circumferal nature.. thus improving the sound, and lessens the direct energy input.. but probably being coupled differently, i guess grados have an edge over the other headphones.. especially in the "thump" or the boom aspect on lower frequencies..
  4. mine died long while back, probably some rotor is spoilt.. cds dont spin at all in the player when power's on.. :S interesting point to note that this marantz, cd 63se uses a JRC 4556 opamp for headphone out.. similar to grados RA-1..
  5. grados.. when my friend whisper i can hear him.. :S
  6. definitely we shouldnt compare headphones by specs if they are of different build, diff resonant chamber size and brands, and designs, i.e. supra vs circumference designs, but when they are of almost the same build, and of the same coil design and material, i guess frequency response has a part to play? we can possibly hear only down to 20hz, and given a subwoofer with lowest frequency response of 20hz, and another one of 10hz, when both produce the 20hz frequency, there should be some audible difference in the performance. i used to be an electric bassist a few years back, and my 80 watt bass amp used a 12 inch celestion driver. i had another electric guitar amp on a 6 inch driver. the bass amp had a much lower frequency spectrum vs the guitar amp..cant remember the exact figures but it hovered around 18-22hz i guess but when you play bass on both, it seems that the amp with the 6 inch driver, had the ability to reproduce the note, but lacks the tight deep punch of the other. it could be many factors, cabinet design, cone material and blahblahblah, for the 6 inch driver to sound better you probably could increase cabinet size, but its not acoustically favourable, resonance etc. by virtue of the differences in frequency response, the bass amp probably didnt have to strain it self as much as the electric guitar amp in producing the low frequencies, there was much more control. if you are some physics expert there's some formula linking frequency & driver frequency response with amplitude or something.. most high end headphones i.e. the dt 880s, staxs, akgs, they probably feature 5-10hz to 30khz or 35khz in some cases as a frequency range.. the coil can reproduce 20hz to 20khz (our hearing range) with better "ease"? ah well. guess you are right too. that aural perceptions of each individuals are different
  7. hmm.. an attempt in making the grados circumaural by using earpads? HMMM..
  8. tried many different sources.. seems that grados have an edge in uncannily biased representations of highs.. makes me pretty fatigued after listening for a period of time :S is it just me or does anyone experienced the same things? i think my grados sr 80s might be up for sale soon.. had these grados for a few months.. seldom used them but burnt them in with 50hrs of play tho.. is it too little?
  9. 300 bucks is a good price. its 250 usd elsewhere and in uk its probably 175 pounds.. close to 450-500 bucks to singapore! up for ya
  10. speakers are chario academys.. the two floor standings are a pair of seldom used danish speakers.. amp's an uncommon brand, SG Jolida running on 6550s pretty low powered at 50watts.. lol if only the amp was a kt88 version.. 6550 gives pretty little juice as compared to kt88s and i m having quite a bit of problem driving my low efficiency charios.. think 86dba or something cd player's denon, i've got a marantz hidden below on the last rack but it died quite sometime back, repaired once for 300 bucks but died again, cant read cds at all..but can power up etc pretty sweet sounding setup, especially for vocals, turn off the lights and it seems that the singer's in the room, but i dont listen much to vocal music anymore adcom gfa 565 power amp.. from 1988 or 1989 i think.. still working but its counterpart.. the preamp died a year ago.. probably due to a relay problem.. refused to kick into the secondary circuit. speaker cables are cable talk biwires, i've 2 sets, a white set cable talk 4, and the current one is cable talk 3.1 or something... inter connects.. lol dont ask i cant remember either.. koped all from my dad.. if i m not wrong i still have pretty decent inter connects and speaker cables lying around somewhere athome.. chanced upon 1 pair of 8 wired copper ribbon speaker cables b4. and some funny teflon interconnects have an musical fidelity amp downstairs running on another denon, driving a pair of old polk speakers :S use that for radio at home sometimes
  11. paris miki refuses to let me buy contact lenses for my sister, those disposable ones.. saying that i have to bring her down for an eye examination before they permit the sale of it. my sis have been using the same type of disposable for probably a yr+ or two quite irritated by the one at suntec. went to another shop nearby and got my purchase almost immediately.
  12. i believe the hf-1 wont sound any worse than the 225s.. after all same coil, similar make, just different driver housing etc.. definitely sound better, with a description of better bass etc arhh :S
  13. :S Grados HF-1, 225 voice coil on wooden resonant chambers.. 225s have freq range of 20hz to 20khz grados 325i... metal resonant chambers.. coil frequency of 18hz to 22khz i think.. :S:S which one better? arhhhhh
  14. 300 bucks is pretty much a good price for a great pair of headphones.. what i didnt like was the fone cord sort of tangly cabling.. what are your reviews of this versus the grados 325i? is the 325i for sale soon?
