After the installation of new bearing and external psu...and discarding the internal transformer, regulator, and PCB assembly...

I have been wondering if it would be worthwhile to change the power cable and interconnects. What's your opinion?

  2. what's the upgrade bro?

    Heehee...got myself a Technics SL1210M5G bro, with a CA 640P. :))

Seller is a local Ebayer...his collection mainly Old Chinese LPs (Teresa Teng and others) and Chinese Opera...don't see any classical in his listing.

Ok Chinese oldies I also eat... :D how to go about it bro?

  3. Got these from a local used LP dealer in Bishan...both records are near mint, surprisingly, although the sleeves are only ok condition...both Japan pressed...the Beatles' a 1973 reissue...the Doors album is pretty rare as it is a promotional copy.

Where in Bishan? Got classical LP or not?

The Denon DP-300F...has an internal phono stage; a good entry for those who are new to TT. But be cautious...once you got a foot in...the urge to upgrade your TT will be great...I, for one, succumbed...

Intend to put mine up for sale...Bought in Jan 2010. PM me if interested.

  4. Actually I like this rack from Red Point...think it is going for around $65.

    IPB Image

Line a few of this along the wall...and room will look like a record shop...

Sorry for the small pic...the only one I can get from Red Point website.

Got one from Red Point before. $68. It is very well made with dark drown veneer all sides. Made of heavy ply wood. The empty box itself is already heavy. Fill up with LPs and it will be much heavier. But you can add small castor wheels on it easily I think that's what they do at Red Point.

  5. I was surprised myself when I could hear the difference. Recently, my VDH Digicoupler coaxial cable was giving my Cambridge 840C some problems, so I swapped it out for a cheap Daiso fiber optic cable. I was shocked when this $30 optical cable gave me better instrument separation and a bit more midbass without sacrificing anything else. Now I wonder if a VDH Optocoupler would be even better.

I realise that system synergy makes it very hard to recommend a specific coaxial or optical cable. When I had my Stello DA100, my Digicoupler performed better than the optical cable. With my 840C it is the reverse. All from the same Asus Xonar D2X soundcard. System matching sure can be a pain!

You are right on spot. The time spent on finding the detail differences between cables, would be better spent on just sit back and enjoy the music. Just get something you like and within budget, and enjoy it. Don't need to worry too much about whether this cable is better than the others. Just my humble opinion...

  6. the pic just sample. i thought was easy to find them at those household or hardware shops too. so far, none is suitable

As iCal mentioned, Howard Storage at Parkway Parade may have something for you. Alternatively, try to check out IMM there is one shop called Song something selling many stainless steel kitchen ware.

  7. waw! you very bad leh, only tell her 10% of what was paid.

i'll tell her, "oh, is my friend's set. i borrow only! "

Hahaha pot calling the kettle bad (oops, I mean black)....

Tried that line already, didn't work

 You guys quite innovative in your explanations. :rclxms:

I normally would say an item is 30% (of the actual cost).

If sense that 'a storm might be coming', would say I need the toys to

de-stress or the Chinese would say 平衡心理

Of course at some correct timing, need to 'automatic' buy some Prada bag ...

    Cheers,

    Hmm....perhaps a thread for "explanations to spouses"...heehee

  8. i also looking for a decent dish drainer but no luck. something simple like this,

    IPB Image

Might be too shallow to hold the records? Maybe those normal plastic or stainless steel type which can easily find in normal household or hardware shops?

  9. you are not alone

Hahaha...well it typically goes like this:

Wife: You bought new equipment? how much is it?

Me: Very cheap only la, $xx($xxx) (always about 10% of what was paid).

Wife: I don't believe, must be very expensive...

But lobster I believe your wife would rather you spend the money on these toys and toying with them at home than spending your time and money elsewhere where she doesn't even know or see...

  10. some Cantonese LPs i had sound pretty thin and not dynamic. CDs are better quality then.

I listening to Sam Hui. A used Polydor which is in very good condition. Although some surface marks and lines, no noise whatsoever. More musical and listenable than the CD.

Oh, he bought from Zenn? Hmph, why never update??? Paiseh... :P Maybe got another unit for sale??

no don't think so. it's bought by kachui.

  11. The SL-1210M5G comes in glossy piano-black finish with silver speckles. Think the silver is the 1200Mk5.

The red light at the switch is standard for all versions. The Blue tracking light is special for the SL-1210M5G which is a 30th anniversary version of the 1200 series. Other models have white light.

Thanks. And I found the following link:

  12. On the Denon, I did an A-B with the stock footers and the TAOC 35s. Stock footers sound muddy compared to the TAOC.

My setup is getting a bit messy...the CDP is pretty much neglected nowadays...very happy with the TT set up now, all the LPs, old and new, just sound so much fuller, smoother, and involving, compared to the CDs (I am just not good at describing sound)...Listening to "Chariots of Fire" soundtrack LP now...wow...the CD of this album is nothing like this...not even close.

I am lazy to do AB test nowadays, just want to sit down peacefullly to enjoy the music. On the sound part, yup I know what you mean. Likewise for me, I used to buy some Chinese oldies or "Ming ge" (Folk songs) CDs, but they sound so harsh, worse than the sound of same album I have on cassette tapes. Now I got them on LPs the feeling is back. LPs sound more musical. My guess is, for those analog recording, they will sound harsh when transferred onto CD.

I thought the surfac of Technics 1210 is silver in colour? Or is yours a different version? And those blue and red lightings look so cool...do they come as part of the equipment or you installed them?

  13. everything related to TT

ya, in fact we all are self poisoning

i believe the TT do need to sit on a stable platform. have no experience on Vibrapods. but the Taoc 25 footers donesn't work on my TT.

*listening to David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust (Japan press)

I am putting my DH cones under the Denon DP-300F. I noticed that with the stock feet, the TT doesn't really rest stably on the rack shelf so using the cones should provide more stability. But I did not do any AB test whatsoever. I am putting these cones there cos I have them spare anyway. But I suspect Vibrapods should be quite helpful to this TT.

  14. heh, heh...got it used. Quite a good condition one...only one previous owner...and he is not a DJ or scratcher...and according to him, seldom use it. Only thing, he accidentally threw away the hinges for the dust cover (so he did not use the cover...still wrapped in plastic when I brought it home)...will need to get that from Sim Lim tomorrow.

Wah you are fast man, from the Denon to this (Technics?) within how long? A month? Now trying to poison people again huh?

  15. :bash: Need a bigger pay cheque as welll...ha, ha.

Just got back from my uncle friend...this old sifu who has been in hifi since the 70's...

Learned how to accurately adjust the anti-skate on the TT from him...he came up with this method himself by using an old LD...since the LD has a smooth surface, the arm should not move when you rest the stylus on the LD...if it starts skating, it means the anti-skate is not adjusted properly. Try it on various spots on the LD, the outer, middle and the inner circle.

What kind of isolation you putting under your TT?

alamak, i'm out dated...so many ppl are already into vinyl and electrostatic; while i am still using my old but royalty setup

As long as you are happy...

  16. i just have 214 CDs as of now..have been spending on CDs for the pass 3 months..my amount of CDs actually went from 12 to 214..how much money i spend,i cannot count already..:yawn: so early in the morning

come on,CDP or DAC also can..just come home setup..blow the portable in pieces man..haha

Well my CDs are collected over a period of about 20 years (since the late 80s)...Last time, used to have more classical CDs, buying from places like Pertama, Joo Huat, Song Ching, Chiang Huat, Beethoven, Sing, Sembawang (only one outlet then)...Last time, no Gramophone, no HMV, but we can get more classical CDs but also more expensive.

I still remember the first CD I bought after buying a Aiwa CD player - Gherswin's Rhapsody in Blue - from Pertama in Marina Center.

Then when I went overseas for study (Australia), also bought plenty. When started working, bought plenty also in Japan, Taiwan, China during my business trips. In other words, wherever I go, I look for CDs to buy  How much I spent, I dare not even estimate...
