  1. Actually i think they're similar to the Westone UM56, which would be available in SG. Though i don't know if they fit the Jays. In fact a few other companies do this too, ACS comes to mind.

But right now, are you already happy with the sound of Jays? Because this can be a good time to upgrade, especially if you've had your Jays for a long time already.

Thanks for taking time to comment.

I've been using the Jays for past 2 years, and am happy with it so far (of course have not tried others to compare). It does sounds good to me ;-)

I'll wait out for the so-called international launch, and take the next step.

By the way, have you done an ear impression before? I heard it needs to be done for customs.

    Any recommendations? Thanks!

  2. If your budget is around $500, get universal IEM. IMO, better. Well, I guess you can still choose to have customs.

Jays can be customs but only do that if you really like it since it will be permanently just for you only. Do contact or PM stereo for this. With a fee of course.

I just found out that the Jays can be customized... By Jays' partner in Sweden, starting in Apr 2010!

Guess what? It's a plug-&-play type that let's you revert to the original buds if you wish.

And the custom is made of silicone. No idea of the price though, and it's available in Sweden only at this time.

  3. sure, hm im not sure if the anc7 has fit problems, but i know es7 and esw9 do. They tend to be too tight. but after some wearing out they become much more comfortable, like the esw9 i used to own, it became extremely comfortable and snug. anyway the tight headband is not an uncommon problem. i believe manufacturers tend to make it tighter so that it will fit more heads.

btw, iems are quite comfortable with the right tips. and, if you have the budget, spring for the customs. These, i believe, can provide more comfort and noise isolation than any cans or universal iems out there.

so maybe you wanna state your budget? heh.

    IEMs... Hmmm...

I read about customs, but have not tried it before. It really fits well as the name suggest huh?

Budget wise? $500? How much is the minimum for customs?

I actually have a pair of Jays right now (can't remember the model. Could be Q).

The original tips fits pretty well for short term, but if it's for 2 or more hours, tend to be pretty stuffed, especially if you are flying.

Can the Jays be "custom"? Or only particular brands can be "custom"?

    Thanks!

  4. Eh bro, when they 'press on your ear', its meant to do so. Not that ur ears are too large. These kinda cans are called supra aural if i rem correctly. What you are looking for to cover your ear entirely would be over the ear kinds. And generally there aren't any portable headphones that are like that, not even those the guys above mentioned, because over ear ones are larger. So you would be looking for cans for home use to bring out. Some cans that come to mind: A700, A900, SRH440/840, W1000. If i remember correctly the pro700 and m50 frm AT might be over the ears. These should be more portable.

    Thanks for this insight.

After wearing the it for a period of time (say 2 to 3 hrs), I can feel that the cans actually presses on the cartilage of my ears, and gets pretty uncomfortable. Maybe the overall fit it kind of tight to begin with. Thus, I was hoping to get the cans that can actually fit my ears in it. Will check out your recommendations. Thanks!

  5. Which Best Denki is selling the NX-A01?

I saw it last Saturday at Thomson Plaza branch going for $129.00.

There's also a demo piece. Think only has white color, though there's a black version available overseas.

I think I saw it some time ago in Sim Lim Square ... Just asked around there...

I saw it couple of days ago at Best Denki IMM. Selling for S$139.xx ...

Do you recall which shop was that? Or perhaps which floor?

How long ago was that? I can pop by tomorrow to check it out. Thanks!

  6. Well, good luck finding some USB powered speakers that sounds as good as these given the price... I have checked out the U10 but the cost is just too much  ... Let me know if you manage to find it cheap

I agreed that the A01 sounds great when I checked it out. I was also surprised at the price, given that online prices are the same but in USD. The U10 certainly cost a lot more! That's probably gonna set me thinking. One other option is the Logitech mm28. That's the NXT flat panel stuff that's going for USD60. Need to hear it first though.

Will update if I come across a reasonable price for U10.

  7. I think you can't go wrong with NX-A01 at best denki. Fir S$129, that's a steal! I got mine from audiocube for a lot more but still very happy with it.

Don't think you can get NX-U10 here ...

Thanks! Only problem is NX-A01 needs AC power.

Thus not too portable on the go unless within reach of power supply.

I'm still keeping a look-out. Else probably buy overseas.

  8. Anyone knows where to get the Yamaha portable speakers?

    There's a cube version (NX-A01) and a typical bar version (NX-U10).

I heard the NX-A01 at Best Denki and the sound is great!

Best Denki only has the NX-A01 going at $129. In US, they are retailing for at least US$179 online!!!

Did we have a good buy here or what???

The advantage of NX-U10 is that it has USB and batter power in addition to AC.

The NX-A01 only has AC, but it looks good.

    Thanks for any heads-up!

  9. hehe i'm using a lineout from audiolineout.com with my iPod...seeing how this lineout costs more than the LDM+ itself, it had better not be the problem heh.

i remember reading somewhere on head-fi...someone review another amp and was likewise struck by the amt of hiss. fortunately for him, this hiss went away with some burn in. i hope this is the case for me too.

Hopefully with some burn-in, the hiss will be reduced.

But then again, once the music comes on, can't hear the hiss. Bear with it just for that short while.

I'm using UM1 with it. In terms of volume, when I switch the LDM+ to full volume, the sound kind of just a little louder than without using LDM+ (keeping the player volume constant). By the way, we plug the IC to the headphones socket of the player right? Mine don't seemed to work when plug into LineOut (using iAudio U3).

  10. i'm surprised that there is a very audible hiss when i plug my UM2 into the LDM+ with no source connected. i'm curious, cos i'm already having the unit with lower gain. even stranger is that the hissing is loudest at a slight turn of the knob (from the on/off position) and then becomes softer as the knob is turned to increase volume. finally, at the maximum vol position the hiss disappears...

when i have a source (iPod + lineout) connected, the hissing becomes very audible with the knob at lowest and at maximum volume; hissing is faint (but audible nonetheless) at somewhere near the middle position. all observations were made with the whole set up running on battery power.

err can anyone explain if this is normal? paiseh, this is my first amp, you see.

Similar experience on hissing sound too. Is this normal?

  11. Good news! The eagle has landed. On the way to Rowell Court now :))

And seemed that the GST is also on the low side.

Will wait for Haxyer to update us on the amount each has to come up with.

Based on initial information, seemed that $2 per person would suffice!

  12. ya if lower then you guys just pay less. i will calculate according to it.

most likely to be 2 dollars each as there is admin fees of $25 too.

Sounds good. Sorry I missed out the $25 :P

Think bros don't mind paying a "flat fee per person" concept.

Easier for Haxyer to manage. Else he'll have a pocket full of coins :D

  13. ok i got the invoice. tomorrow 830am get goods!

btw the invoice total is 276 USD. this invoice he anyhow declare one, not the real price. the total dont even tally lol

    IPB Image

Looks like the figure is just around S$450 (US$267 * 1.6). Thus, GST would be on S$450.

Let's see how much Customs want to charge. Chances are it's based on 5% of $450=$22.50.

I can't remember how many people ordered (if go by the list on Page 1, then it's 22).

If this is the case (GST based on US$276), I suggest we top-up $1 each to Haxyer for simplicity.

    Any violent objection?

  14. I agree we should all share the cost of getting the stuff here.

By the way, is the package stuck at SingPost Centre in Eunos?

My office's right up the building (but I not working for SingPost lah ;-))

Let me know how I can help.

Else beep me when you are here. At least can take a small small load off you ;-)

  15. With the direction things are going now though, there's a huge probability I'm pulling out.

A lot of the other students have pulled out as well, and this will cause a disrepancy in the hotel room sharing fees o_O

Must be the additional fuel surcharges that raised the prices.

What about getting rooms at the local boarding houses? Should be cheaper than hotels.

    Good luck :holiday:

  16. nabwong: I wish to be able to at least run into one of those places whilst on the SigGraph conference time. :)

skysurf: Aiyoh, sounds expensive! This isn't a holiday trip either, its a conference + study trip :D

Since you are going all the way to Boston (and probably don't get to go there often), you must drop by Harvard Square. Not expensive lah. I'm sure you'll like it if you are a student. Imagine a campus setting right in the middle of a town! I like the browsing, and look-look-see-see rather than the big malls. You'll probably like the quaint architectures of the place too. The exchange rate also in our favour right now :P

  17. Places to check out headphones in Boston

    Spearit Sound - Boston ( Near Boston U )

Audio Lab - Cambridge ( Harvard Square )

    Daddy's music - Boston ( Opposite Berklee )

Guitar Center - Boston ( Near Spearit Sound )

Apple shop - Cambridge ( Cambridgeside Galleria )

    Electronic malls

Circuit city - Somerville ( Assembly Square )

Best Buy - Cambridge ( Cambridgeside Galleria & Landmark Center in Boston )

    Microcenter - Cambridge ( Cambridgeport )

Make sure you save a day to go Harvard Sqaure. You won't regret it. Soak in the atmosphere, have a coffee, hang out at the book shops. I really liked it when I was there :))
