Search around forums and you will find that the Zen Micro headphone jack is just so prone to the problem you faced. In fact, a good friend of mine had the same problem with his Zen Micro. After a trip to Creative customer service centre and an hour of diagnosis later, they offered to fix the jack for SGD116(daylight robbery). There are DIY guides that show you how to fix the headphone jack. Of course if you still have warranty on your DAP, then....

That's a swell idea, scanfiend! I saw some universal AC adaptors at a discount shop but they only go up to 12V. Anyway, you know of any reputable AC adaptor brands or are they all roughly the same?

Wah, like that can buy 3 X EP630 instead of 1 X CX300. I would suggest you take a serious look at the CK7 as well. And, if you are willing to stretch your budget a bit, the UM1. Heard a young man in Jaben today about lunchtime saying, "The UM1 are the best sounding earphones I have tried."
