  1. do having something to stack up the amp and cdp help to change the sound?compare to puting it on the table top without anything?like buy those 3M de stopper to bring up the amp.

Placing Amps and CDPs on these devices are actually for isolation or decoupling purposes.

CDPs utilise a laser and a spinning disc, you want as little vibration to the transport system to ensure accuracy of the datastream as the laser reads the disc.

Tubes are micrphononic due to their glass housings, thus, you also want as little vibration as possible.

A staff from X Audio mentioned to me that placing TAOC footers under tube amps have much more pronounced effects as compared to solid state amps.

    1) 6C33C can be really hot. Mmmm, hope the temperature around there is not too hot otherwise i would not play for more than 3-4 hours continuously. How's the wood of that table top? Solid or particle chip or plywood? If it is of good quality, maybe still ok, not sure if softer wood will react well with hot air after long play (1- 2 years)

    2) i think speaker is a bit too close to wall? if possible a little off the wall may be better.

    Just a thought.

The 6C33C tubes are really hot, they run like "nuclear reactors" as mentioned in a review.

I've been running the amp 12 hours a day to burn in, it can take it. The only risk is it being a fire hazard :D

The table top is made of particle chip, a less than ideal platform for speakers, which is why i'm using the spike footers. I'm definitely sure the table will be affected by the intense heat, let's see how Ikea products hold up in harsh conditions..

I need the space on the table to study. As such the speakers are at their optimum positions giving my limitations. Furthermore, they're front ported, so proximity to the wall is less of an issue.

when stack up the amp & CDP do make lot of difference imo. forget about the 3M stoppers. get a set of proper footers like Qi Cones on your Diva or get something made of woods to act as footers. you will be surprised to hear those woody Chinese Chess sound better than 3m rubber stoppers.

ya, i think speakers are too close to wall too. and the footers you used on speakers why 2 instead of 3 a side??

    BTW, nice set up.

I use a set of 3 footers per speaker, perhaps you can only see one or two in my photos.

    Your amp is beautiful.

Thanks Yun Xiang, arrange a date with me to drop by soon and have a listen! Much has changed since you last visited.

Do I see Crystal Cable ICs?? Piccolo? How are they? Good?

Soli no have contact for Cheena babies... how about Viet?

Those are Crystal Cable Micro RCAs, one up from the Piccolo series.

I read in a review that the Piccolo performs better with line level sources, e.g. pre-amp to power-amp, while the Micro is more suited for CDP to amp.

I'm a Crystal Cable fanboy, so my opinions are biased :D

Silver ICs go very well with tube amps somehow, and this pair of Micros are highly resolving, you know when a record sounds bad.

They do nothing wrong and are largely neutral, but excel in decays and airy highs.

  2. Here's a few pics of my speaker set-up in my bedroom.

Usual constraints of size and no space for speaker stands.

Recently added Soundcare Superspikes Self-Adhesive variant to help with boomy and weak bass due to speakers being on study table.

Highly recommend this tweak if you are facing same issues as me.

  3. I have finally received my CDs with the encoded tracks in a hard disk (:

I don't have a good comparison with regards to sound quality, but one immediate thing I noticed was a tighter bass when playing through my speakers

The CD repair process is just AWESOME, I can hardly believe it. Very badly scratched CDs are now almost flawless, save for a few hairline scratches.

  4. Another reason why I'm using this service is because all the tags and album art will be in. If I were to rip them myself using EAC and accurate rip, coupled with my tagging process, each disc will take me 30mins. 200 CDs x 30mins = 100 hours, madness.

  5. Hi Guys,

I'm going to send out most of my music CD collection to Ken of ALOaudio for him to rip into wav/flac with his new industrial CD ripper at 3.30pm later on today.

Before I send my CDs off on their journey, I'd just like to check if there is a local company that does the same as well. Shipping to the U.S. is expensive :(

The motivation for me to send my CDs in is because I want to enjoy my music in their full resolution with my new and incoming UE10Pros.

However, my entire music library is currently encoded with LAME in 320kbps, and since I don't have the time to rerip 150+ discs, I figured I'd just spend the money and get it done professionally.

If you know someone/company that provides a professional ripping service with the use of an industrial CD ripper, please PM me! Thanks!

  6. Hi Guys,

I received a set of really old bookshelf speakers (made in the 1980s) and am looking for an entry level CD player to pair with them.

I currently have my iMod + Portable vCap combo feeding into a LUXMAN L-3 amplifier through the RCA jacks which is driving a pair of Teledyne Acoustic Research AR18Js.

I am also driving my Alessandro MS-1s with the headphone output of the LUXMAN, it sounds pretty good :)

I've searched around, done my homework and finally settled on these 3 models, Marantz CD5001, OPPO DV-980H or Denon DCD 835.

I understand that the Marantz CD5001 is the entry CDP of choice for many. However, I need a very good analog output as my old amplifier will only take RCA input.

Is this the right one for me? Can any kind soul PM me the cheapest price they have found for the 5001? And also, is it worth the money to go a step up and purchase a 6002 instead?

The OPPO DV-980H is a DVD player that upscales into 1080p and sports a good analog output as reported by various reviews. Can it beat the 5001? I have a 24" Full HD LCD monitor connected to my computer, so having the DVD upscaling function would be nice, but will the video circuitry add noise to the audio output? I have found the lowest price to be around 3 and a 1/2 hundred dollars.

I managed to find a Denon DCD 835 selling on the echoloft second hand trade forums for less than two hundred. Is this any good?

I am out of the house 15hours a day, so the home rig mainly serves to provide relaxing music during the evenings, there isn't really a need for a fancy CDP.

My bookshelf speakers are also very warm, their strong suit are vocals, so you might want to take that into consideration.

Is my iMod + Portable vCap combo sufficient? I've seen a couple of comments stating that this combo bests thousand-dollarish CDPs.

All helpful comments are welcome! Thanks!

  7. For example, if you've got an MP3 file @ 192kbps, there's no point re-encoding it to a higher bitrate or quality (e.g., 320kbps AAC) because there won't be any real increase in quality.

In other words, you cannot add more resolution to a file that already has low resolution.

You can only compress that resolution (with lossy formats such as mp3) or preserve the resolution (with lossless formats like flac).

  8. Go to Jaben Networks on the 4th floor of The Adelphi (the building opposite Funan).

The atmosphere and people there are so friendly that I think you'll forget any qualms about trying headphones at shops. Reviews and words are not representative of what a headphone would sound like to you.

So if you can help it (and you surely, can) do drop by for an audition.

  9. I went for the triple.fi + custom tips combo and regretted it.

I absolutely love the triple.fi sound signature but the custom tips just roll off the treble =[

Perhaps my ears are just funny, cos friends who went for the same route told me the custom tips alter the sound minimally.

My advice is blow the buck and get the bang from UE11pros.

  10. If you're planning to use the D1 to power your bookshelves, then you'll probably need a T-amp as there isn't enough juice in the D1 to do so.

Alternatively, you can google "travagans" for a DAC+AMP combo that can drive both headphones and bookshelves with ease. The sound aint too shabby either, it has been reviewed by skylab of head-fi.
