The Local User Review by Melvin

    • First review so here goes :)

Recently got an MPA2.5 from Alvin and when I plugged it into my system which is a DIVA CDP and a Sennheiser HD650 coupled with a ZU Mobius cable, I was amazed to hear how full and musical it was.

Coming from a past where I used to have quite a couple of budget headphone amps like little dot and the simpler SS headphone amps, was taken off when I tried this.

Firstly to note is that I have tried before certain rave reviews SS headphone amps like the beta-22 so I have the rough idea of how the best of SS should sound. For the MPA2.5, it is smooth as comparable to other SS which I have tired and somehow if want to compare in aspect wise, it will not lose to a beta-22 for its price/size to quality. Both the treble and bass control was tidy and was not in a mess, even when I tried with Zhang YuSheng which is very demanding for treble, it can drive it up to my Sennheiser HD650.

Personally I feel that all headphone amps have certain mojo in them and the mojo in this MPA2.5 sound terrific.

Over the weekend I took DAC7010 from Alvin. Not robbing, just lending. On first try I feel the coaxial out sound similar to my cdp analogue out. But on further listening, it makes the music minor details fuller and the music to be more flexible to the genre of music. It also makes the certain genre of music to be more dynamic much more than the MPA2.5 alone.

    # The 1st Local Review by Mr.Patrick

    Hi Alvin,

    This is my review.

Just got a new shipped loan set from Alvin last Sat.

As it has not been run in yet, therefore I was expecting the music should still be in the box (DAC7010).

When I first turned it on in my listening room, one really hardly believe it, the music just shined out of the small box!

    That is something impressive!

After few hours of playing with different kinds of music, the low,mid & high have been more involving then in its presentation.

I love music that should not be something out of the box, I want it to be revealed for what it is to be and always accurately presence in its original state!

IMHO, this is one of those DACs that will deliver!

    Cheerio,

    Patrick

  3. Brother, I can only say we wish you well but there isn't much hope when you have been sucked in so deep.....

But your set up looks great and I am sure you are enjoying yourself.

    yah..enjoying myself now

never know music can sounds so good!

    orgh >"<

drank the poison of fren's UE triple fi and Shure SE530... :bash:

    :helpsmilie:

  4. Received my LM4562MA, removed the AD8397.

OMG, 2 PCB track came out

got to use tiny little jumper to solder the LM4562MA on the PCB.

Luckily, my Mini3 still works well

AMB Mini3 with LM4562MA, current rating 15mA, which means 170mAh battery can last about 10hrs :)

It sounds very detailed, a bit too detailed and cause harshness in high..

great for monitoring purposes instead of easy listening

  5. OMG.. is me again.. lol :DD

I have done a newly DIYed Mini3 with OPA2107AU, which claims to have 90% performance of the legendary OPA627!

The operating voltage of this small little OPA2107AU is +-4.5v, which is just nice for a fully charged 9v battery in mini3

OK, let have some photos, it might be bored to read words only >"<

    IPB Image

*Cant see the baby OPA2107, it's hiding under the caps

    IPB Image

*dont have Wima Black Box anymore..left 2pcs <_<

Moded the bypass caps of OPamps to 10uf35v Silmic // with 0.1uf Wima Caps, Gain 2x, BC 036 220uf Power Rail Caps, and White LED :lust:

In fact i was a bit worried how long would the fully charged 9v battery last since the min. operating voltage of OPA2107AU is 4.5v, if battery voltage drain lower the rating, the OPA will simply don't works.

Luckily it doesn't, i have been running in my OPA2107AU Mini3 since 10am to now, still full of energy! No performance degradation issue !

Measured current rating of the Mini3_2107 is 10.x mA, theoretically, with 170mA battery, the Mini3_2107 should last 16hrs! I am rather happy with this battery life (much longer than AD8397!)

    Equipment: Ipod Classic 80GB-> DIY Cardas Ipod LOD-> Mini3_2107-> Shure SE110 & ATH-M50 & HD650(Cardas-ed)

    IPB Image

    How Mini3 sounds with OPA2107AU?

    • Excellent Vocal, forward, smooth, mellow and detailed
    • Tight & Deep Bass
    • Darker Background, Quieter
    • BurrBrown OPA Signature - Laid back
    • Less fatigue for long hours listening
    • Slightly narrower sound stage as compared with AD8397, but 'deeper'
    • Might be a little muddy for some genre especially for more music instruments
I'm very happy with Mini3_2107, using it as portable rig now

My next try would be Linear Technology Op amp! still hunting

  6. i've just de-modded the golden frako and cerafine after reading the replies & feedbacks.

i did not remove the wima black box, but i did solder 10uf35v silmic parallel to wima caps to provide good power supply decoupling as recommended in AD8397 datasheet.

  7. I have a Mini3 with the high performance opamp and another with the extended battery life opamps and I actually prefer the latter as it is more mellow. Sound stage wise, I am not discerning enough. And battery life is good. Two days listening before running out of juice.

wow, two days is consider very long as compare with performance version!

i will try the extended battery life opa next week

  8. exactly, changing bypass caps of OPA would cause stability and oscillation issue

so..mod it at own risk. :D

check out my post @ headfi.

amb has pointed out some useful feedback to my mod :shocking:

after reading his reply, i did a A/B test with original mini3 using my ipod LOD as source.

i still prefer the mod ones as it has (*slightly) better sound stage and mellow vocal. no doubt the stock components already sounds decent :lust:

  9. hm.. hand itchy again, and i'm too free during this long vacation :bash:

    modded my mini^3

    removed 2x 100u25v FM, 2x 470u16v FM, 6x 0.1u

    IPB Image

modded with 2x 47u25v Cerefine, 2x 470u25v Made in Germany Frako, 6x Wima Black Box

it sounds better indeed! better sound stage and musical!

burning in now to find out more

  10. i did my own cable with cardas connector and solid core copper(i know.. but since i'm not gonna shift it around that often.. i will do by with it..).. wow... treble extension is now better compared to stock... still burning in.. :-)

care to share your diy senn cable photos?

  11. yes, i know that. i've built 7 senn cables using the cardas' senn connectors.

but thank you for your help.

i was just asking because the OP didnt show the third party connectors on his 'preparation' picture. :))

those connectors look a lot better than the cardas senn connectors. the cardas connectors are bi*ch to solder.

where can i find those connectors? does neo chen sell those connectors?

how can i get in touch with him(or it if it's a company)?

    thanks for your help.

ops nope, he is not selling the connectors. he happened to get it from one of his client who requested him to customize a senn cable.

if I'm not wrong, the connectors are from a china online shop (2 years ago)...
