  2. since you're gna use a dac, i presume you'll always be using with a laptop? (or any source like cdp etc. that can be used with a dac, lah)

so anyway, usually dac/amp combo wont sound as good as a single unit amp + single unit dac combo, and then again a portable dac like the udac wont sound as good as a desktop one. so i suggest you think about whether u need the portability first.

  3. Haha, i'm happily using my westone 3, will custom it only after warranty is over. So basically i havent done impressions before.

I do know that if you order um56 frm jaben, they'll do the impressions for u for free.

As for other places that does impressions, they would generally be the audiologists. But im not to sure where to go to. Heh. Time for other seniors to come in.

  4. I just found out that the Jays can be customized... By Jays' partner in Sweden, starting in Apr 2010!

Guess what? It's a plug-&-play type that let's you revert to the original buds if you wish.

And the custom is made of silicone. No idea of the price though, and it's available in Sweden only at this time.

    http://www.jays.se/products/earphones/q-ja...stom-molds.html

Actually i think they're similar to the Westone UM56, which would be available in SG. Though i don't know if they fit the Jays. In fact a few other companies do this too, ACS comes to mind.

But right now, are you already happy with the sound of Jays? Because this can be a good time to upgrade, especially if you've had your Jays for a long time already.

  5. If your budget is around $500, get universal IEM. IMO, better. Well, I guess you can still choose to have customs.

Jays can be customs but only do that if you really like it since it will be permanently just for you only. Do contact or PM stereo for this. With a fee of course.

heh, +1 on that. With about 350-450 you could get a 2nd hand top tier universal that is in good condition or if you're lucky, brand new. From there, you can choose to spend another 300 to 400 on it to customise and add an extra driver. So for example, tf10 could be bought at about 300 on the market, then u can spend 400+ to customise and add a fourth driver. The result is something similar to ue11, which costs nearly twice as much. And anyway the customization can be done later when you're ready.

Generally i wont recommend you to buy the top tier universals in shops. I find the mark up extremely high. Usually at least a mark up of 150. But perhaps the deal will be more secure if you need it.

  6. IEMs... Hmmm...

I read about customs, but have not tried it before. It really fits well as the name suggest huh?

Budget wise? $500? How much is the minimum for customs?

I actually have a pair of Jays right now (can't remember the model. Could be Q).

The original tips fits pretty well for short term, but if it's for 2 or more hours, tend to be pretty stuffed, especially if you are flying.

Can the Jays be "custom"? Or only particular brands can be "custom"?

    Thanks!

hmm right now if you wanna customise universal IEMS, there's UE, Westone, Etymotics, do ask stereo though. im not fully sure.

anyway if you just wna go straight for customs, UE, Livewires, Westone, ACS, Sleek, JH are some that come to mind, though with 500 it would probably be one of the more basic ones. IIRC, about 600-700 can get u the livewire trips, which is a triple amature driver custom.

actually when flying, i would personally prefer to not wear anything during take off and landing, because i feel that the sound pressure adds to the pressure difference when landing/taking off. For myself, i use westone 3 with either the medium single flang tips from shure, or the dual flanges from etymotics. these usually fit for quite some time. i've even worn them for an afternoon nap for about 4-5 hours and they still fit quite snugly when i woke up.

anyway if you fly frequently i think its better to look at iems as your option over headphones, as the over ear kind of headphones tend to be very bulky.

  7. Thanks for this insight.

After wearing the it for a period of time (say 2 to 3 hrs), I can feel that the cans actually presses on the cartilage of my ears, and gets pretty uncomfortable. Maybe the overall fit it kind of tight to begin with. Thus, I was hoping to get the cans that can actually fit my ears in it. Will check out your recommendations. Thanks!

sure, hm im not sure if the anc7 has fit problems, but i know es7 and esw9 do. They tend to be too tight. but after some wearing out they become much more comfortable, like the esw9 i used to own, it became extremely comfortable and snug. anyway the tight headband is not an uncommon problem. i believe manufacturers tend to make it tighter so that it will fit more heads.

btw, iems are quite comfortable with the right tips. and, if you have the budget, spring for the customs. These, i believe, can provide more comfort and noise isolation than any cans or universal iems out there.

so maybe you wanna state your budget? heh.

  8. Thanks for the recommendations ;-)

I currently have the ATH-ANC7, but the cans presses on my ears (kind of small I guess).

    Are these larger?

Eh bro, when they 'press on your ear', its meant to do so. Not that ur ears are too large. These kinda cans are called supra aural if i rem correctly. What you are looking for to cover your ear entirely would be over the ear kinds. And generally there aren't any portable headphones that are like that, not even those the guys above mentioned, because over ear ones are larger. So you would be looking for cans for home use to bring out. Some cans that come to mind: A700, A900, SRH440/840, W1000. If i remember correctly the pro700 and m50 frm AT might be over the ears. These should be more portable.

  9. thanks, Chicky !

headache lah, becoz the Maverick has more upgrade options especially the power cord.............

if the Maverick has no DAC built in and no tube preamp, i'll make that my 1st choice............i don't like paying for things i'm not gonna use.........

maybe i'll wait for Audiotrak to come up with Imamp mk2 or Maverick to come up with a better pure headamp...............

i hate it when i have choices..............hard to make up my mind lah.........

Why not think of them as 'freebies' given to you for buying the amp? sometimes having that extra thing doesnt mean you must use it anyway. and what if you have a need for it in future?

  10. more than 70 views and no comment ???

    strange...........real strange........

bro, when there's no comments, u can probably find most answers on the forums.

    1) call up stereo and ask for price of D1, simple.

    2) sound is subjective, so i believe u shld be thinkin on the lines of what sonic qualities u prefer and then go around forums to see which one has what sonic qualities. of course final audition is when u listen to both urself.

    3) im sure this can be found over at head-fi

    4) which one are u referring to. and if they're socket type, i don't see why not.

though i cant give any accurate answers because i havent heard these 2 amps for myself before, i could give u the sources to find your answers. hope it helped.

  11. hellos!

am kinda new here. was reading around looking for good headphones.

i was wondering if anyone of you heard of these monster headphones before? my friend got a set of the solo series and it's quite good in my opinion.

i looked upon different sites and the reviews are quite good. so i was hoping to get some more opinions here before purchasing it.

or do you guys have anything else to recommend me? (:

do not judge based on looks. I havent heard of these cans, so i cant really give u a good opinion. However most ppl say that though the sound quality is good, it may be a little overpriced. But to me, if the quality is good enough for you and you think its worth it, buy it, afterall your friend has it, borrow it for a listen

  12. More info required: kind of music u listen to, what qualities ur looking for, What kind of wire you're referring to. (rca cable frm amp to speakers wld be different frm lod from ipod to amp etc)

if you are getting frm stereo, ur choices are limited only to ibasso's stuff and qables' iqube. I suggest you keep your choices wide open, there are quite a few audio shops at adelphi, if you wna look for portable amp, jaben sells em, otherwise you can look for home amps there or other shops in the building too

  13. Hmm im always using my laptop, so if i want to get a soundcard, is it better to get an expresscard slot kind or a usb one like the creative one. Im generally looking at creative products cos im not well versed in this sector, so any recommendations at all would be good, hope to keep the budget under 100 though. Intending to run a dac through it in future

  14. No.1, you can easily see whether it was worth it by comparing with other shops. But then again, usually there isnt much discounts a shop can give so prices are pretty much fixed and universal. Unless of course you talk about the 2nd hand market and importing frm elsewhere then i wouldnt know

No.2, no point worrying about this after your purchase because even if it wasnt worth it, there's nothing you can do. If you sell as 2nd had, you make more loss anyway. So why not just enjoy the cans and so long as they satisfy you, every dollar would be worth it isnt it?

  15. Thanks for your comprehensive reply. At this point while im still contemplating between HT and Stereo, perhaps u can give some reco for speaker amps for stereo.

Actually for speakers im looking at the wharfedale diamond 10.1 or monitor audio br2, and i wld have a budget of about 300 to 500 for DAC, around 300 for speaker amp. Not sure if that is sufficient, do advise.

Also i wont mind buying 2nd hand items for the dac and amp, but i'll want to get the speakers first hand. Actually i would like to hear more of the vocals and smooth trebles, coupled with a tight bass, doesnt have to be deep though. I want it to sound musical enough for my music collection but at the same time produce the tinge of impact in movies.

  16. actually im still not sure whether i'll move to 5.1, because rooms are getting smaller nowadays anyway, and stationing 5 speakers in a small room will be pretty crammed.

If i get speaker amps, does that mean i have to look for those that are compatible to add on subs as well? what are some examples of speaker amps you'll recommend?
