sound quality, synergy with the rest of yr systems, features you need.. DAC used, transport mech etc...

I believe in garbage in, garbage out. As such, I believe in building a system downstream ie. source to can/speaker and not the reverse. But contrary to what most people believe the cdp as the source, I firmly believe the person is the truer source. Hence, you must know what you want from your system and be oblivious to the comments of others, just as long as you are happy with the music it produces. It's harder these days due to forums and thus, peer pressure.

 

If you already have one or two parts of a system such as amp and cans, you gotta figure out all the positive and negative traits and try to find a cdp that will synergize with the rest of the system. I see it as an equation with different variables to play with until you get the desired result.

 

That being said, don't look too closely on technical specs as they mean moot in terms of music presentation. A cdp with 24-bit DAC will produce more details than a conventional 16-bit player but not necessarily better in overall performance. Take for instance Marantz, many if not most audiophiles have owned a Marantz (low end, high end) and it's still very popular. However, it has never produced a 24-bit cdp which reiterates newer technology does not quantify to better music.

Hee.. one day i am going to try my Enzer DVD player with 24 bit DAC as a source to hear the different..

Check your manual, Enzer and its equivalent should house a 24bit DAC, like all dvdps in the market now. I'm dead sure about that.

Thanks for all those who give recommendations.

 

Maybe I never say clearly, my bad.

 

I will try to get only used stuffs, unless otherwise like maybe the oppo player or sort that is new and affordable.

 

The players that I will buy if no other choices or shortlisted currently is:

1) Marantz cd63 se/ki t.s.lim mod.

 

The players I will go try it out, recommends from you guys are:

1) Oppo player.

 

Cause I heard haxyer's cd63 se tslim mod, for jazz/bossa nova I like it, it make the music livier, dynamic.

For rock/metal also, but I feel the vocal is abit soft/drown out, i'm not sure whether its that cd recording or not.

But the instruments are great and quite detailed, at least to me.

Since I only tried one rock/metal cd using that cdp at haxyer's house.

 

So if you guys got more recommendations for me in the budget range of $350-450?

New or used also can, but I definitely aiming for used item which is a better deal.

Marantz is well known to be a tad slower in terms of attack and may not bode well for rock music. But if you don't feel that anything is amiss, your choice of CD63SE is feasible. Since you are at it, why not try a CD6000OSE which superseded the 63 series?

For the Oppo, I suggest you buy it only if you're actually going to use it for DVD playback as well. If not you might be wasting your money. I purchased one because I needed a new dvd player capable of playing divx videos. Haven't actually had the chance to evaluate its performance audio-wise, because my headphone amp is away. It sounded decent when I heard it at X-Audio though.

Maybe i'm still a beginner and never tried much other brands yet.

Till now only Denon and Marantz, that's why.

Or maybe the Marantz I heard is already T.S.Lim mod.

 

I heard Nad is good for rock/metal?

 

I will try the cd6000ose if there's one for audition, as long it is under my budget.

Bear in mind that long term reliability and parts availability are just as important, if not more, than sound quality.

Yea Mackie also warned me on the parts availability.

But if I get the marantz cd63 should be ok, since its a popular cdp, the replacement for parts are available most of the time from what I heard.

I am curious about this. How do u know abt the sound quality when everyone's opinion on music is quite different. As for synergy, unless u really get to audit the cdp with your current equipment, how would u really know how well the synergy is going to be.

 

Can i say that its at best still a mere guess to a certain extend... and well as long as you find the music pleasant to your ears then its alright.
