Vinyl in Singapore?

Recommended Posts

Where would one get...

- Record sleeves

- New records

- Second-hand records

- Cleaning accessories

...in Singapore? I'm seriously considering a move to vinyl, and I'm curious as to where I could turn to for help back home.

Also, how much does a new Rega P3 go for in Singapore - I wish to compare prices between Australia and Singapore.

So... anyone? Rameish? cmk? Anyone? :helpsmilie:

Place to go for vinyl is Adelphi. The place to get a Rega is also there, I think the shop is called CD Resources and the owner is Jimmy Goh. His experience with HiFi is more than 20 years.

There are two shops offering disc cleaning and so also have paper sleeves. One of them is in the basement, forgot the name but it is in a corner and has 2nd hand equipment all over.

You can get new disks and also the paper sleeves from New Village Disc (I think that's the name), but they specialise in rare records. There is another vinyl shop in the building. So, one stop for everything.

HTH.

Basically, you can find anything you mentioned in Adelphi, try to look around there, you will find a few LP shops there.

Rega P3 will cost you around 1k, you might also find a used one here sometime,

For instance, here's one for sale,

I cant give you the exact price for a Rega P3 but it's in the reagion of S$1,000 (give or take a bit). Also depends on what cart you want to get with it. I suggest a Goldring. You can also get the NAD turntable (made by Rega) and is basically a P2 (there are some differences) but you get a 'free" goldring cart.

Just make sure you have a phono amp or you amp comes with a phono stage (for MM cart at least).

Besides the Rega you can try the basic Sota (available at Music By Design). The Project Debut is also a good starter turntable (for the life of me I cant remember the name of the shop now - it's the guys who bring in Clearaudio as well) When I remember I post again.

The NAD is brought in by GP Acoustics.

For new vinyl (and I recommend new vinyl) Music By Design usually has a decent selection but stocks run out pretty fast and it's ever changing. Their prices for new vinyl is also very fair.

There are also a couple of second hand vinyl shops.

Thanks all for the replies so far!

Regarding the shops that offer cleaning - would anyone be able to give me a comparison on the services they offer, and more importantly, the quality of cleaning provided? Do they sell archival plastic sleeves (what type of plastic is it?) and MoFi record sleeves individually?

Planning my itinerary for when I get back to SG. :)

The reason I'm especially concerned about the quality and safety of the cleaning services provided is because I intend to clean some rare (and possibly valuable) Beatles records. And just think - I don't even have a turntable yet!

Aaron, how many LPs do you have to clean? If its a handfull, I can clean them for you, quality assured. Plastic sleeves get Nagaoka from NDV, they are from Japan. Mofi sleeve not sure, but they won't be cheap, again check with NDV, agent for Mofi.

Is that your gal in the siggy?

Hey there K,

Yeah - I actually only have 2 records to clean - a Horzu Die Beatles and a German Apple Sergeant Pepper's LHCB. They're not that common (the first one especially), which is why I'm a bit worried about safety issues. :)

IF you really don't mind, I'll take you up on your offer. No obligations! I'll send a PM when I get back (Jan). Then after the cleaning we can have a listen too. ;)

The Nagaoka ones are the 'ricepaper' ones right? They're damned expensive down here in Australia! If you willing to sell any extra sleeves sleeves you have lying around, please let me know.

And, um, yeah. Parents say study hard and don't play, but human nature is human nature... :P

I'm not that crazy a beatles fan, just wanted to listen to some of their music to see what its like.

Nagaoka are not ricepaper type, they are plastic sleeves. Some don't like them, but I've not had any problems with them so far, my preferred sleeve.

Parents say that cos they are footing the bill you know. Actually I kind of advocate a balanced approach. Study hard, but play as well, just know where the boundary lies. Though I think Aussies play too much, but compared to SG, they have a more balanced lifestyle.

While I may not yet be a parent, I understand perfectly where you're coming from. I believe I have a handle on things. -_-

I don't know much about sleeves but I have noticed in my 20+ years vinyl collection that records grow mouldy faster in plastic sleeves. Paper ones are better in this respect.

Thanks for your reply heady.

Can mould be removed safely from a record? I would assume that mold grows only in damp and dark places - am I correct?

I guess when you send the records for cleaning, they will be cleaned off. I use my own diy method of cleaning. Dishwashing liquid and a clean soft sponge with lots of clean water. Seems to work ok but I am no audiophile. Of course, after I wash them, I play them and then use a clean new sleeve. The first time I play the records after washing them, there will be lots of crud coming off and sticking on the stylus, so need to clean the sylus again and again.

BTW don't get the labels wet or they will crumple and even come off. :))

This arrived in the mail today... :)

Dad, who used to collect records (>10 years ago), dropped by and opined that it's a NM.

I'm having difficulty finding even hairline marks under a bright light. As of now I'm up to 3 for both sides. What do you guys think?

And one last question - how do I store this sucker? :D On it's side? Flat? Help!

Apologies for the blurriness of some of the photos - the camera was having difficulty focusing on the shiny vinyl!
