DIY audio cable

Recommended Posts

Hi, I hope to get some advice on how to wire up my cable to the connectors.

I bought some canare 4s6 cables and 3.5mm and RCA plugs. I would like to make some 3.5mm to 3.5mm, 3.5mm to RCA and RCA to RCA cable assemblies. The canare 4s6 cables are star quad (4 conductors) with a shield around. For the 3 kinds of cable assemblies, what are the recommended best ways in which I should solder the cable to the connectors?

For example, for the 3.5mm to RCA, I thought of soldering 2 conductors to the ground and 1 conductor each to the left and right signal and leave the shield floating on the 3.5mm side, while on the RCA side, I will solder the ground and signal conductors to their respective plugs and the shield is still floating.

Is it better to solder the shield to the RCA or 3.5mm ground or floating? Thanks for any advice.
