Anyone getting bored of this headphone obsession?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if any of you guys ever get bored of this headphone obsession? I gave it a thought and realised that I'm always on the move. At one moment, I'm probably interested in headphones and would spend chunks on them. Then suddenly, I'll move on back to splurging on bicycles....And the next moment, after i got my license, i was looking and thinking of cars. And the next moment, poof, just downed 4k for a new comp. Its like a never ending cycle....And when I look back at it, all these seem to be wants and not needs and seriously, they don't help you gain anything but satisfy that materialistic want inside you. For now, I'm just spending more time with friends, hanging out and listening to music occasionally and I've not touched a single headphone for quite some time.....Wierd huh? Its kinda like a hangover from excessive drinking.....Anyone out there having similar feelings or experiences to share?

Oh yeah, just look at the numerous threads on headphones and amps, they all revolve around the same few products. Cardas cables and HD650, go vibe dacs and amps, mylar earphones.....Isn't it plain boring? Its been months and years of discussing and seriously, non of these things sound greater than a live band concert at the esplanade or say sydney opera house.... <_<

When I first got a job, I splurged like crazy on my hifi set. Got a Lenco turntable, after a couple of months, upgrade to Rega and then to a Linn.

Got a Sony amp, which became a Meridian pre/power amps and then upgraded the power amp to monoblocs Meridians. Upgraded the pre-amp to Musical Fidelity. About the only thing I didn't upgrade was the speakers but that was because I bought one which I liked from the begining.

In the process, I threw away thousands of dollars. Now in retrospect, I think I was a fool (probably still is one but less so only :P ). Now I try to justify my purchases and keep them within my budget. Operative word is "try".

It always happens! This happened to me years ago. So you don't see me appearing at Jaben or Stereo for the past 2 years. Headphile will always be part of me. I'm not about to see my cans and setup, but I admittedly don't listen to them much these days. It happens also as your work life/career progresses and changes too.

Bottomline, spend wisely, know how much is enough and how much is just fanatical. Don't throw money into fads. Eventually we all will realise the "loves" that we will hold for a long time.

And that's before the kids come along ... ...

P.S. maybe ladies have it easier. It's just clothes, bags and shoes no matter how old they are.

hmmm i got tired of it, mainly because in headphones , your left ear do not know what your right ear is listening and therefore soundstaging is crippled in a sense, that's why i moved to speakers where the soundstage is more suitable to me.

those who do not understand pls visit meier-audio (europle company) and have a look at their crossfeeds circuit, it makes better soundstaging for headphones in their line of headphone amps. :)

i might go back to headphones but i will make a big jump then for my set up because i feel its better for my pocket then upgrading constantly . .

Well, I don't know what to say. But ever since i got my desktop speakers, I've not used my headphones ever since. The speakers are so much more convenient and probably only thing i need is a sub woofer cause sometimes i like the bass deep and loud but that's about all. I see countless threads around forums on the same old stuff, HD650......K701.....mylars....its just so uninteresting to me....

I'm happy with the setup I have now although I still would like a pair of custom IEM's. I agree that nothing beats the real thing but that would mean moving to for instance Vienna where you can go to a concert every evening. The next best thing is improving on the recordings (I haven't gotten into vinyl...yet) and the source. If you get bored, just take a break and get back later. Anyway, if you read the fora about football or other sports, they go on for years and keep revolving around the same themes too.

Hi folks,

Life an endless repeat is it not?

Listening to music is a good hobby. It 'bores' you, then restart again...just like your life, right? Anyway, we can keep our interest renewed by venturing into various forms n kind of music. Part of this renewal is delving into high fidelity, headphone n speaker systems. Variety is the spice of life! But spend affordably.

Sorry to bore you, iggyting

I'm getting bored of this hobby because I have too little time to sit down and "play" with headphones nowadays.

I would rather listen to my cheap multimedia speakers and do my work in front of the computer, good sounding headphones are also distracting...

hmmmm, if one day we were to be sick of this hobby...

1) what's out other alternative?

2) will we get use to what we used to have?

lols...just some of my though...

1)my alternative might be around music, be it playing or composition.

2) definably my answer will be no, i am too used to my comfort zone...lols...

i have "SEASONs" too man. hoho

it seems like youre into something now, something else back then and then another bug carrying some other venom bit you in the head causing you to fall into another trans like state doing some stuff u wouldnt think you'd do at this point of time.

my dad introduced me to cassette decks, power amps and speakers years ago. then i was hunting down for cables and all those stuff. not long after that, my uncle called me to his house to repair his fluorescent fixtures in his house. 3 of them were faulty. all repaired successfully then i began scrutinizing the fixtures in my house improving whatever possible.

then went to secondary school, got more enthusiastic with music. erhu and stuff. got my 1st own erhu, yeah mod this repaired that. which set of strings suit me. silvers, copper alloys, steel, stainless steel or the great wall set. some woodworking.

then back to speakers, amps...

went to poly, hooked with headphones

then into seal carving. how on earth i got to carving stones? i have no idea hahaha forgot all about audiophile stuff and the forums. magazines left in the dust coater. my little dot sent to holiday. my power amp left asleep for abt a month.

now back to speakers haha

what next? i have no idea

haha ^_^

There's no end, bro ! Cars, watches, computer, audiophile systems, headphones or even torchlights..... any of these can easily cost u a few grands to tens or hundreds. That's when u make your money work harder to enjoy life.

Wow, seem like many have already quit headfi. I left the headphone scene more than a year ago for various reasons.

1. I thought I have spent an excessive sum of $ on headphone stuff that cannot justify the costs.

2. It is a selfish hobby where only one gets to enjoy it at any one time.

3. I spend more time tweaking/changing stuff than listening to music.

4. The flavour of the month frenzy that sings praise of one component, only to be condemned in 30 days' time.

Moved to photography and never looked back. I'm still into audio DIY though, but only to fulfill my wish of DIYing an entire system, just for the joy of it. The material costs aren't high either, as long as you know where to find them.

The only headfi gear I left with is an ipod nano -> iBasso D2 Viper -> UM2.
