Suggestions for suitable music

Recommended Posts

This isn't so much connected to home or personal audio, but I think it's still good to seek advice from people who enjoy sound and music :)

I'm currently in a club doing sound reinforcement (using portable PA set-ups) for school student-organised events. Many times, I don't seem to have suitable event-like music, so am trying to build a library of such tracks, or at least get some idea of what should be used where.

Any suggestions for good pieces for particular function, e.g., VIP introduction, announcement of winners, etc?

I was told about something called chaser music, but not too sure what it's about.

Thanks!

don't know if my knowledge is able to help much or not. but share with you some of what i had learnt.

If you event is been attended by some VIP, is not advisable to play pop music cause of the seriousness of the event ma. Likewise song like instrumental or classical is a good choice.

your target group is school students, so i would recommend something like fourplay music or some classical music?

if your event is attended by minister, never play pop music, or any music with racist issue.

In short, you can play pop music, but must be CLEAN! (like local music)

Thanks, I'll look into fourplay. Heard their CD once, but never really paid attention, didn't have much of an impression.

For instrumentals, I currently have Yanni's works. It's hard to go wrong with him, since some of his tracks are quite well-known. Not a lover of regular pop myself, but we do have older pop tracks which are clean. Not that it matters to the students for general listening.

Real concern is sound and music for special moments, things like fanfare etc. I just had a prize-presentation last week, didn't know/have anything that was suitable for the background. Organiser complained that it was too silent with only the emcee's voice.

This is what I normally use for events,

marching classical for VIP entrance,

single instrument classical for every other things. You can hardly go wrong with this, usually I stick with piano, since it's the easiest instrument to listen to. Having too many instruments in a music will distract the crowd imo and they'll find it irritating rather than smoothing.

"What you need", by Galactic. Excelent track with hip hop and funk influences, very fast paced.

"I Miss the Girl" by Soul Coughing. A bit more unusual, but very good with fast paced footage. It has a quirky but very driven sound to it.

"Shattered Soul" By Herbaliser. Not necessarily a very fast song, but a very powerful groove. Somewhat repetitive, so sinks into the background nicely.

"Go Go Gadget Gospel" by Gnarls Barkley. About as fast as you can want a song, with a very catchy sample, and powerful sound textures that will help to pull a person into the action of the video

Thread necro! :D

syndony, are those with vocals or purely instrumental?

Jazz is good for house music before an event starts, if it's a formal event.

I realised playing pop stuff off someone MP3 player covers most informal student events.

Thanks!

In my honest opinion, playing any kind of songs during casual events, sales/exhibits, and student events that sound similar to Rihanna's "Umbrella" or all that rap and the like that really seem to mess with your head...is a big no-no.

I always wonder why people keep tolerating the blasting of said music. I'd rather some good old-school stuff like S Club 7's, or those lounge or good instrumentals (say Kevin Kern or 2002).

I am sorry if the first paragraph might come across as harsh but it is really irritating to hear overexposed, tasteless music; the effect of which is amplified if you're in an open area with the hot sun.

And err, 2002 is a duo that plays instrumentals.

As you pointed out, it's really a matter of taste. I don't like pop myself, but given the nature of casual events, it's meant to cater to the audience who presumably does like pop more.

Special event-specific music doesn't have too much leeway though; they're normally instrumental and fast-paced to lend a sense of grandeur or excitement to the event.

Faileas, thanks for the suggestion. Those are good, no doubt, but I guess one thing about using music from very well-known shows/settings is that they tend to be overused and invoke memories of the show, rather than convey the original intention of the music. Just think of the Rocky theme :)

Anyway, to update the thread a little, I found a category of music called corporate. They're quite suitable for corporate-style events and slideshow/presentations (with titles like "Driven to Succeed" :D), but I haven't found anything with the attack necessary for a grand prize presentation.

No, not pop. I meant that sort of pop erm, you wouldn't really want to hear more than once...sticks in your head yet you don't like the tune and all.

But never mind me. I'll get back to you if I can find anything helpful. Wish you luck on your endeavours!
