The Black Amp

Recommended Posts

...

The other important question is how much will you charge to have one built?

All are estimated price in S$:

110 for 2x OPA637 & 3x BUF634

40 for Hammond box

20 for the blue ALPS

10 for the Neutrik socket (haven't include the S$2.5 fake neutrik that I bought to mod the spring)

With other stuff like the resistors, Panasonic FCs, connectors, mini sockets, switch, cable, etc. It cost around S$250.- parts only. But it matches amps with price 3x or more it's price wink.gif So still worth tongue.gif

Wow, looking forward to hear more impressions then.

Thanks Mackie!

I was very busy last week, so I finished the amp last minute. My brother came to Singapore last Saturday, and went back on Sunday. I finished the amp Saturday midnight (already Sunday morning actually), so didn't have enough time to test it. Sunday morning, the amp had been burnt-in for about 7 hours. So I only listen to it for a few song tracks from the Chesky Demo Disc.

My impression:

Very very very natural sound. Almost no coloration at all. I love it. Good bass, thick midrange, and correct level of treble when paired with Grado RS-1. Imaging is excellent. I agree if people said that OPA637 (and 627) is one of the best audio Op-Amp. That is very true! It sounds very musical!

Compared to the AD8066 in MyPimeta, not much different, the free AD8066 is really comparable with the SGD 75.- OPA637 (2 chips). The AD8066 sounds a tad brighter, and slightly sounds more 'airy', means you can feel more space between the singers and musical instruments. So the OPA637 is more natural, but the AD8066 has a unique signature which makes it sounds 'high-end'. I mean, the AD8066 signature sound is a very welcome sounds characteristic. With my little experience with Senns, I think Senns better be paired with AD8066 than OPA637. While Grado is better paired with the OPA637.

Last night my brother connect it with Sony CDP-XA7, one of the old high-end player from Sony. And he also use Grado RS-1 (we are the Grado team grado.gif ), here is his comment:

Excellent Amp! Sounds very good! It makes the CDP-XA7 sounds thicker and more enjoyable. The amp also makes the imaging very impressive.

I hope he said that not just to make me happy tongue.gif

When I got time I will share the board layout, so all of you can save your time if you want to make one.

I can help you in circuit diagram and components selection... but building amp need time which is luxurious to me... (I don't have the time lah... tongue.gif )

And you need to specify your taste and requirement happy.gif

Yep..building an amp for another person is not an easy task because u need to tailor the amp for that person's taste and cans and budget constraints.

Anyone has opinion as to whether the Alps Blue is better than those ALPS pots we bought from Farnell?
