Yes they would do great, though you would need a good DAC/soundcard/CDP. Some people would recommend the Aego M too. (Usually those who've not heard the 04s :P)

i heard the aego M has warmer sound and better bass, is that true?

I plan to use Zero dac/amp to amp whatever speakers i get.

You wouldn't really regret your purchase. Personally, I use the ZERO dac with 04s and they sound great.

How would you rate the bass performance? I listen to alot of rock so good bass is important to me. I dont need it to be booming or overwhelming, but clearly audible is good.

Can't really compare eh? 08 is a way higher model than 04. If you aren't impressed by the 08, I think you would be better off with multimedia speakers like the aego m. It has it's own subwoofer too so that would help with the bass.

actually i heard the near04 yesterday and i liked it more than the near08. near08 sounded too bass heavy to me with slighly recessed/thin mids and trebles. Maybe i didnt turn the volume up enough when listening to near08.

But i will probably go for the aego m; was very impressed by its sound and soundstage when i heard it at simlim, and the subwoofer does help. near04 was a little (just a little) lacking in bass for many rock/metal songs i listen to.

Thanks for all the help!

for the price point..,its either aego 2 or esi near 04..,but the near 04s are bookshelves though..,so you gotta place them nearby for them to sound at its best..maybe even 1m apart
