  1. stussyking: U are on the right track in researching the right product for you but this must be substantiated by actually listening to the product and see if your findings will concur with the reviewers'. In actual sense, you will discover the reviewers' preferences which contributed to his/her opinions, and that is imperative. I couldn't fault you in trying hard to come to a sound decision on your next purchase but I reckon you may have a wrong approach on using reviews as benchmarks. Say for instance you have tried DT880 and found cmk's opinions are more in line with yours than mine, you could do well by using cmk's findings to target a specific product you like in future.

Back to the question on Beyer cans, please see the following:

    Latest range

    DT990 (flagship)

    DT880

    DT770

    Previous range

    DT880 (flagship)

    DT990

    DT770

Pro range (clamp pressure is higher) and lookalike of the "previous range"

    DT770 pro

    DT990 pro

Concurrent premium range - foldable and 32ohms impedance

    DT860

    DT660

    DT440

    Pro studio headsets

    DT770 pro

    DT990 pro

    DT150

    DT250

    DT100

  2. I'm as bemused as you. Why are you investigating the output impedance of line-out from a pcdp relative to the impedance of a can? The line-out is supposed to feed a fixed line analogue signal/or optical signal (in some pcdps like panasonic sl-ct720) to input of an amp.

If you really mean to say headphone-out instead of line out, there's no need to be concerned about impedance matching. Since the cans/iem/ear bud is termed as a load, it's the power output from this socket that determines the gain and in layman's term, how loud the can/iem/ear bud will sound at a predetermined volume setting.

With most pcds I'd come across, loads ranging from 16-64 ohms are a breeze to drive but impedance of 120 ohms and more will be a strain.

  3.

It true that md sound is better than cd but if there is no demand, then there wil be no new technology.

I find it no point investing in something which is as good as dead in Singapore unlike LP.

    The choice is yours.

I don't think md is superior sounding than cd and in fact, this is an interim technology borne during transition from cd to mp3 format. In the latter phases, sound quality is compromised (more compression) in favour of smaller playback unit, lower storage memory, longer battery life and greater portability. Now that DAP market has matured, this relegated MD players to oblivion but not all will see it this way though. For instance, I still use a MD player in favour of ipod shuffle if I'm listening to classical or jazz while on the move. I also find it fun converting cds to mds but only for certain genre.

  4. Xiangsheng 708A/B gels well with Beyer cans as their sonic characteristics lean towards "neutrality". However, my concern is your findings that a cdp and an ipod sounded similar as you might not find having an amp in the system will up the ante in sound quality. It's usually easier to discen difference in source than amp changes within a reasonable jump in grade.

  5. My friend lend me his Shure E4C to test water. And this phones is really very solid. But he told me he bought it at $499 :DD

THATS $499!!! For christ sake. But the quality is really top notch. Now i'm thinking... if i have $500 bucks to spend. What other option do i have beside the Shure E4C?

    Are there anything better?

I listen to the Lene Marlin Track "Its True" and with my friend E4C, i feel like Lene is singing in front of me. :lust::drool::drool:

When I read the first sentence, I have the notion you were stirring your pal's E4C in water to test if it's soluble. :D:bash: Just kidding dude.

Give the UM2 a try and it costs less than $500.

  6. Your consicious mind may switch off during sleep but your ear drums will still be transmitting signals to the brain, meaning the ears are still functioning even though you are not aware. The same notion as sleeping after having a heavy supper......your digestive system will be working overtime.

  7. i have a problem with full size headphones...in that they do not seem to be able to reproduce the same roundness/fullness of a sound that the UM2 can. i'm not sure if i'm explaining myself clearly enough though, as up till now, i've only met one other guy who shares the same sentiments as me. i've tried messing with the positioning of the cans on my head, around my ears, but to no avail. granted my experience with headphones go only as far as what wilson has on display in his shop, i'm beginning to doubt if i can ever find a pair that may satisfy me in this aspect.

oh wait. i did already. the k1000 did. err but i suppose thats not counted.

Perhaps you aint looking in the right direction. It could be your partnering equipment instead of the cans. Gotta troubleshoot each link in the system before we can be certain though.

After having spent about a month with an UM2, I switched to Beyer DT770pro and DT831 and yes indeed, the overall sound seems less full but I feel it's an "aural illusion", because the whole soundstage expands in all dimensions, much akin to looking at the entire painting as a whole than a particular spot.

  8. Personally, I would prefer none of the abovementioned than a radio clock. Reason? Give your ear drums a rest; close proximity to ear buds and iems exposes the ear drums to greater vibration from sound waves than an away-from-the-ear sound source. If I have to choose one, than I would go for a comfy ear bud.

  9. Simply put, to burn-in or run-in or cook a cable is actually the equivalent of utilizing the cable. Once you have this understanding, the fact that you need not run in any cable through a sound system will dawn upon you. For instance, I would connect a DIY power cord to my office pc as it's never switched off. Alternatively, you could also use it with any home appliances eg, electric kettle.

In addition, burning in any cable/system simply helps it to reach its optimal performance level sooner. A used cans/cable/equipment etc will not sound any better, no matter how extensive you try to burn them in again.

  10. Bottomline is, MP3 is a compressed format that balances sound quality, storage memory and convenience. At most, it may match (subjective as usual) the orginal cd, from which a MP3 track is ripped and compressed. However, it's hard to fathom the latter will be more superior sounding than the original. As for the various bit rate, the most telling sign of superiority is in the treble region, where airiness and presence largely hinges on.

  11. Hi...there

    just really want to know

    MS-PRO compared with STAX 4040A :cans::cans:

    which one's value for investment ? :thumbup::thumbup:

Choo chooo chooooo....moving back on track, I would say it depends on your favored genre. If its mostly classical, I would prefer the Stax. On the plus side, you would be paying for a system (amp inclusive) if you don't already have one.
