  3. my current design is 4 HA-5002 per channel I'm staying away from discrete components because I try to keep things simple. If using discrete components the design will be more complex and I don't know how many hours will it take me on reading (due to my empty background about electronics), the end result will be a project never ending. further more if headroom's MAX/BLOCKHEAD can make do with 2 HA-5002/channel, I don't see why It is not good enough for me.
  4. I have spent more than 100 hours in the last half year looking at the PCB layout, the schematic, and datasheets of verious components... But why would you be stingy on TLEs? Does 1 TLE make the design easier? Cost wise TLE2426 is $3.50 each at federal component, not that high considering the over all cost of PPA.
  5. how much and what's the AWG dia? My PPA Casing is almost 30cm long, so if the input RCA socket is at back and alps pot is at front, just that portion of connctors will be 90cm long! (for standard euro card size it will be 16cmx3=48cm) then there's the distance from Pot to PCB's op-amp sections and wiring of PCB components and output to socket So even I just use it for the signal path I will need at least 3 meters. I will prefer to group buy 50 ft of 22AWG silver wire from http://www.homegrownaudio.com/diy_silverwire.html then share it amount us. those 26AWG are too fine for my taste.

  11. As I was designing the layout for my own PPA clone, I found a discrepancy between the PPA PCB v1.1A and schematic from tangentsoft website. This is the PCB v1.1A this is part of the original schematic from http://www.tangentsoft.net/audio/ppa/amp/misc/schematic6.pdf this is a schematic I drawed from reading the PCB picture
  12. You are right, I never even measure the DC off-set. The biggest 8-leg TSSOP chip between the yellow cap and the two 47uF/10V cap with unclear lable of MV??? (actually is MV358I) should be the output stage dual op-amp, TI LMV358. From data sheet LMV358 is a single voltage opamp, i.e. instead of having V+ and V- connections, it has Vcc+ and GND. From my understanding, that means the Vout will swing between Vcc and ground instead of between V+ and V-, so the DC output should be at 1/2 Vcc+, making the DC blocking capacitors mandatory. I remember that the voltage across the 220uF yellow Tant cap while the jukebox is playing was about 1.5v, which as I think back support the above theory. Please correct me if I'm wrong. next time will try to mod the main/op-amp power capacitors, but 1st have to locate them... The stupid norton internet security always screw up my IIS FTP and HTTP service! now changed to singnet free 2MB space.

  14. Just finished modding my Creative Jukebox 3 in the middle of night. case opened Zoom in... originally I thought the two 47uF/10v caps are the output caps, which are surprisingly small. In fact that was what made me decided on the mod. Just before starting modding, which multimeter I found out that the yellow Tantalum cap is the actual output cap for one channel, with the other one on the back of PCB around the same position. 227J means 220uF +-5%, which is reasonably good. There goes my hope of dramatic improvement. I parrallel each of the yellow cap with a Sanyo OS-CON SP 680uF/6.3V and a Wima MPS-? 0.56uF/63V. The mod is successful even though I almost destroyed the PCB. Due to the gigantic amount of free space inside jukebox3, The trace or wire are all within 3cm. The improvement of sound is noticeble (comparison done when only one channel is modded, too bad did not try any rock sound), but not big. More test is needed. because my digicam is in service now, pics of the final work will only be posted later.

    you talking about the yellow 100n/63v cap? I have bought some 22n ceramic caps at $0.10 each for the PPA's C3. Wondering whether film or ceramic better? Personally I don't like the look of the ceramic disk.

    federal component only charge me $3.50 for each TLE2426 less than a month ago. I bought 3, but that Mary originally mistaken as 2, so it should be $3.50 each when you buy two. On farnel catalog it is $2.41 for one and $1.92 for 25 or more. All price without GST though.

    Don't scare me lah... I have no background of any kind and is building a PPA clone as my 1st time. in fact that's why I choose OPA627 than OPA637. already invested so much into the parts, if later cannot work will die...
  22. oooou, I missed it! can you or any of the the other guys take a little less so that can let me buy 10ft? I'm sure not all of you will be using up all is the short term, maybe later can join the HGA MO for 22G (which i believe is more useful)? Or can I trade 20m of Kester 62Sn/36Pb/2Ag 0.8mm dia(21G) (should be about 100+ grams) for 4m of that MO 24G silver wire? Any taker?

  25. The silver in solder is not for better conduction property as like silver wire. It is there for better bonding between the wire and solder (maybe bcos silver and copper are in the same group under the periodic table, but that's just my guess). In normal tin/lead solder, the lead also serve the same purposed. In lead free solder, silver is required for the bonding (tin cannot do the job). In Sn/Pb/Ag alloy solder, silver is just for even better bonding. The your worry does not stand.
