  1. Nice, can I go and have a listen too? tongue.gif

Here are what i think are good alternatives from easiest to most difficult.

Audio Artistry Beethoven loudspeakers used (sound scape hifi) ~$16k

    http://www.soundscapehifi.com/used_items.htm#aabeethoven

Stax headphones (and accompanying amp) $1k and up

Linkwitz Orion Dipole loudspeaker system ~$2.5k (Amplification is another $6-800 at least)

    http://www.linkwitzlab.com/orion_us.htm

I also thought of the costs of a DIY speaker inspired by the Genesis 1.1, about $8k. (Amplification is another $2k at least)

Prices does not include a source & pre-amp. For the last 2 items, the price refers to the raw parts costs. Room treatment plays a big part too, that'll be ~$2k if u diy everything.

Seriously, I really do like to go listen thou, are you planning to go back anytime soon? tongue.gif

  2. I remember reading an article where the chinese made fake ALPs measured better (tighter tolerance of resistance) than the real ALPs. That was a one off measurement, not a statistic from comparing a batch of each pots.

Anyway the reason you want ALPS however, is to improve transparency right?

The guy who regularly sells presoldered stepped pot with dale vishay resistors on taiwan ebay for around $70 sounds like the best deal to me so far.

Actually the best deal is to swap between a few pairs of very high quality holco resistors to get the volume u want... considering the $$$ vs sound hehe.

  3. Prefer this over the RS-1 and HF-1. Great for rock, metal and other none audiophile approved genres.

Yours for only *SOLD*. In great working condition.

Unfortunately the cans come as-is, i don't have the box, extension cable nor 1/8th to 1/4th adaptor. Comes with the sennheiser yellow pads. Interested parties pls email or pm me.

  4. DIY as an alternative to owning the real thing is rarely done, unless the originals were easily copied for the price being charged, which then really don't say much for the manufacturer.

But DIY to make something that suits your current taste with certain music with your current equipment/room, is a harder, less perceptibly impressive to others but can be said to be a truer expression of self, ie, enjoy music more.

Incidentally, there are diy designs for the T27, B200 and B139 drivers available in the 70s, dunno if can find anot. These 70s designs would be interesting comparison to contemporary speakers or even the LS 3/5.

  5. FWIW,I use a 3M Command Adhesive jumbo hook

They aren't big enough for my grado headband to sit in comfortable but the grados are so light it works ok and I kept it when i changed tables.

There's so many holes in the frame my ikea jerker table,

perhaps even just shoving a disposable chopstick in will work... yeah.gif

Hell, i can probably hang half a dozen headphones on one side. Luckily chopsticks are cheap smile.gif

  6. Yes, they are on stock tubes at the moment. There's another 2 pairs probably given to iconic by his relative, haven't tried those. I intend to have a mini shootout with yotiao this x'mas... not sure if i have time to tube roll and burn in the amp before we meet up...

Where can I get the Siemens E88CC in Singapore? I believe they aren't cheap, ~$100 a pair?

  7. Bang for buck aside...

The RA-1 is a well designed product. The mahogany enclosure provides vibration control, enhancing some of the resonances like a wooden speaker box would.

The capacitors in the outputs also colour the sound. It is all in all designed to give more of the grado sound.

The volume pot could be better though..

  8. Wuh so rare ar. Hmmm don't barradio have the naim one as well? Guess I'll contact him and pay him a visit in the near future. A friend is bringing in some chinese headamp, bada i think.

Haven't been chatting, too busy working... ahhh the student's life, how i miss it so... dry.gif

  9. I currently use yellow pads as well, the through hole bowl ones were unbearable. You can either use components and/or cables with rolled off highs (ie synergy) or if with a pc, eq out the upper bits of 1-3khz. I've learned to live with mine blink.gif

I think the badges on the grados result in some of the brightness... also why alessandros dont have em. No, havent tried on my own yet... hehe... maybe when i upgrade and in turn end up with a spare...

  10. CD not spinning when powered on is definitely a transport problem. Need to replace the lens assembly for around $20-30.

I repaired 2 cdps before, both times were direct drop in replacement... hard part is... eheh to find source for the lens assembly...

I have 2 CD4000s (technically, one is a philips but its exactly the same inside) i havent repaired left languishing on top of a marantz receiver... no time... hammer.gif
