Personally I'm fine with grados... more i use them for prolongue period longer i can 'tahan' them. On average now i can keep em on for 2-3hours no problem.

Well not wanting a headphone amp really limits your selection to only grados. Everything else you mentioned will benefit alot from the headamp. Another choice would be Sony MDR-CD3000 but thats $600+

 

There are portable ones available, some even fit into tin candy cases like the old strepsils'!

They would cost an extra $50 to 100++ depending if your making it yourself or buying off someone.

Personally I would only use Grado amp on headphones as easy to drive as grados. Earphones comes to mind... don't think any cans are easier than grados.

 

One main reason is cos the original design uses ONE abysmal opamp to drive both channels. As seen in Gilmore and PPA, they use like half a dozen or more. That means the grado amp can only drive really easy cans well... anything else would be underdriven and the brightness mychew experienced could be due to the lack of power.

Never ever send before receiving the money from a stranger you never dealt with.

I'd suggest the one that is closed, i.e. there are no holes on the back of the cans.
