  2. OT:i am using my hd800 for classical and jazz and female vocal...it does very well for these genre to my ears..the stax are good but just dun have the slam and the feel that dynamic can do for me..

OT: I am looking for the perfect classical headphone :P

What amp are you using for the HD800?

I thought that the orthos and the electrostatics are reputedly better for classical.

  3. Yes, it is pricey.

Was quoted around S$6200 for the combo (SR007 mk2 + SRM727ii). But the attack is damn fast, listen to rock music is damn shiok.

I think it is hard to imagine. just go and try and get an idea. :cans:

Ya, i think they also have 507 for testing if i remember correctly.. SR007 is just right next to it, so... high chance u will test it :P

    Have fun!

I am more a classical person, that's why the hifimans (more so than the LCD-2 I think) are good for me :P

Love to audition the STAX, but I always feel intimidated when I go to those high end shops at Adelphi.

So did you get a STAX system in the end?

LCD-3 is out by the way, but nearly USD2000

  4. I tried Stax SR-007 MK2 at Music By Design and was very very impressed with STAX technology.

Tested with Michael Jackson's Dangerous album.

    Do give it a try.

IMO, I think Dynamics and planar headphones no fight.

The 007/009 way too ex liao. Still have to buy a matching amp some more

I am thinking of the 507, dunno good or not.

I kinda like the planar sound leh, though my hifiman is the lower end model and certainly not perfect.

I have never heard a STAX of cos :P

  5. I just got my Denon D2000 today. Wow...these cans are really excellent for rock. Nice bass, good detail and decent soundstage - very musical. With my EF1, it sounds just right. I'll spend more time listening to it tonight - but first impression is that these are excellent for rock. And it's feels very comfortable, too.

I'll still keep my 702s for female vocals and lighter stuff...

    Hi naglfar,

Are you using the EF1 for your K702 too?

Can pm me where and for how much you got your D2000?

    Cheers.

  6. Hi all,

    Thanks for all your suggestions.

I had a go at the Grado 125 just today. Find it a bit lean, though more lively, as compared to my Senn HD595 (both playing MP3s through the HA Info NG94 USB DAC/Amp). Now I am having second thought on the Alessandro MS1i for rock :(

The Denon and Ultrasone recommended by naglfar seem interesting. Will try to find more info on them.

For the classical/vocals combo, I wonder if a STAX 3030 or 4040 system would be better than a K702+Amp combi.

  7. Hi all,

I am trying to revamp my home headphone system. As I listen to all kinds of music, from classical, vocals (both males and females), (some) jazz and instrumentals, all the way to pop, dance and heavy metal (addicted to Black Sabbath now; previous addiction was Rachmaninoff! :P), I am looking at getting two different headphones to better cater to the different types of music.

For pop, dance and heavy metal I am less fussy with SQ and is considering the Alessandro MS1i.

I am looking at low, well-defined bass as well as good details.

For classical and vocals I am more fussy with SQ. I am hoping for something with good details, imaging and separation, but with musicality and sweetness(?). I am looking at the AKG K702 but I read that it is very neutral/balanced and can be uninvolving, so I guess I need a suitable amp to inject that quinessential musicality and sweetness. A tube amp perhaps?

    Any suggestion or recommendation?

I have a budget of around S$1.5k for the two headphones and amp, S$2k max.

    Cheers.

  8. Hi,

I need a RCA to mini cable to connect my DAC line out (RCAs) to my headphone amp (stereo mini in).

I am thinking of asking LHS to make one for me. Any recommendation on what wire and plugs to choose?

I also need a 4.5V AC adaptor (at least 500 mA) to power my headphone amp. Where is a good place to get one?

    Thanks.

  9. Hi all,

I am trying to build a home headphone system from scratch. Almost all of my music are in digital format (mp3 and flac), and hence my main problem is the music server itself.

At my workplace I am using the Senn HD595 with a USB DAC running from my laptop, which can be kept on the whole time I am in office (working of course! :D). So no worry there.

At home, I don't really want to turn on my pc just to listen to music. Its noisy and consume too much electricity.

Some of the options I have explored include

    1) Squeezebox with a NAS or NAS-like device (fit-pc2, vortexbox). The negative part is that I will have to keep my router on, which is crappy and prone to dropouts. But I think I might be able to physically situate the NAS just next to the Squeezebox and all the other equipments.

    2) Ipod + iTransport, using the digital out. But I am not an Apple/iTunes user (using Foobar2000 now), so I am not very keen on this option.

    3) A standalone solution from the audio companies, but these are really expensive, so its not very viable.

Anyone has other suggestion? I am trying not to spend more than S$1000 for this part of the system.

I still lack the headphone itself of course, and a DAC/amp, but I will worry about that later. :))

    Cheers.

  10. Would have preferred though if Stereo have kept their website updated so that one does not make a trip there to find a product listed in their website as being non-existent and no longer carried there.

You can also give them a call before you head down.

I normally just send Aron a pm and ask for the price as well.

So it like jackpot, depending on your luck and who's serving you. :smoke:

But the chance of winning is much higher at Stereo :P

In some shops at SLS or Adelphi, the chance is practically nil! :D

  11. I have visited Stereo many times for the past few years, and I must say that their service is almost uniformly excellent, especially the PS branch. I went down there a few times to try out the K702 and the Koss ESP950 (thanks Aron!), but didn't buy anything. No problem there.

It's a rare thing these days, the politeness, professionalism and no-pressure service of the Stereo staff.

At the low end shops you have your chow ah bengs and at the high end shops you have your dog-eyes-see-people-down. I almost feel bad that I didn't get anything from them for the past year liao, after my UM2 :P

  12. Hi. Sorry to revive this thread.

I just got my UM2. Like the thread starter, I also notice more hiss, or "static", with my UM2 than my previous UM1. It is quite faint, but I can still hear it during quieter passage. It is quite irritating I must said.

When i deliberately turn up the high treble (14 kHz) in the equalizer, it became very very clear, something akin to radio static, so I don't think its my ears ....

Can anyone help? Is it just my UM2, so maybe I can go back and change?

  13. Thanks for the replies.

So if the switch is up means high gain is it?

I am now using the asio4all drivers. The windows volume control no longer has any effect, nor does the winamp volume control, but somehow the winamp equalizer still has an effect. Strange. Not sure if I have achieved bit transparency.

  14. Just got my D2, listening to classical flac using Sennheiser 595. Clean and clear, but didn't have that wow factor I was expecting, hopefully it will get better :P

Using winamp outputing via usb, I was wondering how it will work and was surpised to find out that the volume control and equaliizer on winamp actually have an effect on the music!!! I am a bit of a digital music idiot, someone please help explain. Apologies :))

Oh ya, the gain switch ... up means ? down means ? Thanks!
