  1. Nadia's Theme, a.k.a The Young and The Restless Soap opera theme song composed by Barry De Vorzon. Its a touching piece used in Nadia Comaneci's montage by ABC tv in 1976 when she scored the first perfect 10 ever in olympic history for gymnastics...Its so inspiring and dark and filled with tranquility and the silence at the start of the piece is so eerie.

  2. My first experience where I realized there was something special going on in listening to music was in 1965, when I was 10 years of age. My parents had friends whom we went to visit on occasion.

The gentleman of the house had a dedicated listening room and throughout the entire house everywhere there was space he had vinyl LPs stored. I remember him telling my Dad that he had over 1000 records, as they were commonly called in those days.

In his listening room there were vacuum tubes aglow, although I surely didn't know what they were at the time. The only piece of equipment I remember specifically was a Thorens turntable. He said he ordered it from Chicago, which seemed impressive for someone living in the hills of rural Kentucky, USA.

The other thing I remember from our visits was some kind of really cool feeling I had from seeing and hearing all this. I think I realized right then and there that music and listening to music would be very important to me.

    I was correct.

I've always had pretty nice gear but always try to never let the equipment, or analyzing equipment get in the way of enjoying the music, even my old recordings that sound horrible.

My first Original Sony Walkman in 1982. I still keep it as a relic!

Then...1st Gen. Rega Planar 3 with RB 300 arm & RB 100 Cartridge , 1st Gen Naim Nait Amp , Heybrook HB2 speakers inherited from my late uncle in 1985.

Next... Linn LP12 with various arm/cartridge combos, various Naim pre/power combos, Various Speakers, all 2 way bookshelf... ProAc, Epos & Harbeth.

Got rid of my whole analog rig in 1991 & travelled the world with my first CD player... a Sony D-25S Discman & my first Grado SR 100.

The Sony D-25S is still very much alive & kicking after having it serviced in Japan a couple of years ago :P

It feels so good to be young....:))

  3. i have that feeling too, just too lazy to take the phones out of the box and blah blah. much easier with speakers. On main switch, press button, put in cd and press button.

OT abit, u actually put ur phones into drybox?

Yeah, because I stay beside the sea so salt content in the air is high so is humidty especially when i open the windows to view the ships then wind blows like crazy and i'm afraid of the headphone plug tips get oxidised...Cause its a chore to clean them. So yeah, i keep them in a dry box...

  4. Bored with headphone obsession hmm... I guess that depends how you see it. For me I will be bored now and then but once in a while when I pick up a new song to listen to, it reminds me of what if I didnt spend money into such equipment. Will I enjoy it as much? To me audio improves my quality of life and enjoyment as such its pretty much worth as long as I dont go overbored.

But the thing is, I'm picking up new songs are rediscovering musical enjoyment through my speakers as I talk..... :D Coz my speakers are connected and it takes little effort to flick on the two switchs on the 2 modules to get music pumping instead of reaching out into the dry box, opening up cases and taking out headphones and amps and plug convertors....And yeah, the cable running all over the floor....

  5. I hope I am bored with it so that I can use the money to improve my quality of life.

But the thing is, alot of people feel that spending money on them improves thier quality of life... At least for me it did when i was crazy about it....I can come home, take a hot shower and sit in front of my comp, turn on the air con and relax to soothing music played from speakers...That's some quality lifestyle.......

Or say, chill in my living room and see the singapore flyer with its array of lights while listening to jazz....

  6. Seriously, this audio hobby is an overrated one. One has to spend so much to get back so little due to laws of diminishing returns. People who claim that spending 10 grands on certain equipments is a justifiable act are simply nuts because they have a very high expectation of things and in thier mind, its screwed in deeply and instilled upon them that any increase in audio enjoyment or by the slightest percentage equates to a whole new different level of audio bliss. They get overly excited by that slightest increment because most of them are in some ways perfectionist and want the best out of their system. To them, probably even 50 grand would be justifiable even if it means squeezing that extra 0.01% of deeper bass and wider soundstage out of their system. I may be wrong but that's how i view it after venturing into this hobby. I had to admit that at the later stage of the hobby, I was more interested in collecting cans than actually listening to them and honestly speaking, at both headphone meets, neither the L3000 through the yamamotos or say the edition 9's through some amazing 10k CD player actually impressed me alot. They just sounded really nice and neat but nothing amazing. Its just, hmmm, ok, well, that's it? You mean I have to spend another 3 to 4k to have something that sounds just like that? That's it? So yeah, its really a sit there idle, spend money hobby. Not much skills involved.

  7. Well, I don't know what to say. But ever since i got my desktop speakers, I've not used my headphones ever since. The speakers are so much more convenient and probably only thing i need is a sub woofer cause sometimes i like the bass deep and loud but that's about all. I see countless threads around forums on the same old stuff, HD650......K701.....mylars....its just so uninteresting to me....

  8. Just wondering if any of you guys ever get bored of this headphone obsession? I gave it a thought and realised that I'm always on the move. At one moment, I'm probably interested in headphones and would spend chunks on them. Then suddenly, I'll move on back to splurging on bicycles....And the next moment, after i got my license, i was looking and thinking of cars. And the next moment, poof, just downed 4k for a new comp. Its like a never ending cycle....And when I look back at it, all these seem to be wants and not needs and seriously, they don't help you gain anything but satisfy that materialistic want inside you. For now, I'm just spending more time with friends, hanging out and listening to music occasionally and I've not touched a single headphone for quite some time.....Wierd huh? Its kinda like a hangover from excessive drinking.....Anyone out there having similar feelings or experiences to share?

Oh yeah, just look at the numerous threads on headphones and amps, they all revolve around the same few products. Cardas cables and HD650, go vibe dacs and amps, mylar earphones.....Isn't it plain boring? Its been months and years of discussing and seriously, non of these things sound greater than a live band concert at the esplanade or say sydney opera house.... <_<

  9. Hhmm...I seem to be getting comments from people who don't own the Grado GS 1000 or are not fans of these headphones !?!

Original Topic: "Grado GS 1000 owners, share your views on these super cans"

Hmmm, I guess reviews aren't exactly accurate because I feel that many people give a pair of cans great results due to them paying alot of $$$ for it or probably because everyone else over at say head-fi or head-case says so. (note: its not a general assumption but its the feeling i get after browsing through forums all over the net....)

Trying the GS-1000s from RA-1's, HA-02s, Gilmore Lites, GS-1s, and the list goes on with many sources and amps, what I'am hearing is the same old boomy bassed and laid back mid sound. Its just not balanced. I know what you say when we talk about system synergy but nope, I ain't getting any of it on my GS-1ks. I've got two pairs to try them both out and nope, they both sound the same out of any system. Its just not my cuppa tea.

Oh but wait, they do sound a little better when I'am listening at lower volumes. I guess its because of the bass that makes more presence in the music thus at lower volumes, it doesn't feel as overwhelming as opposed to hearing them cans at my usual volume. But note, its just a slight improvement. Other than that, these cans are crap.

  10. So I guess I'am the only one who disapproves the Grado GS-1000's sound. And probably the Hf-1's as well. I feel that these two headphones sound mediocre out of anything I've tried them on. From GS-1 to HA-02 and then the blackcube linear and the RA-1, I hated them GS-1ks....

  11. Any forumers out there using Almarro Integrated Tube amps? How are they? I recently stumbled upon the rather small A205A MkII amp from Almarro that comes with an XLR jack specifically for K1000s.

As I am new to the K1000, any owners out there can advise on whether this will be a good amp for the earspeakers. Reason I am asking is that the Almarro apparently puts out only 5WPC whereas some forumers have remarked that the K1000 needs at least 7WPC.

Another issue is the XLR mod, plugging the hardwire part of the K1000 into the amplifier would negate 10ft or so of the other part of the cable. I understand as well that the K1000 need at least 8ft of cable to sound optimal.

Essentially, I am looking for a smallish integrated amp to drive my K1000, preferably tubes, so if the Almarro is OK, will probably make a beeline for it.

    Thanks!

Wrong place to ask...Haha, headfi would warrant you with a much more satisfactory answer if not try out head-case...Sgheadphones has too small a population to have enough people with enough experience with the K1000's and this amp that you just mentioned to give u a satisfactory reply. I may be wrong but then again, its better off asking people at head-fi.

  12. The original song title is 涙そうそう (Nada Sou Sou) by 夏川りみ (Rimi Natsukawa) which happens to be the OST for the film 涙そうそう (Nada Sou Sou) acted by Satoshi Tsumabuki amd Masami Nagasawa (same actress as "crying out for love in the centre of the world" movie).

Back to topic, Rimi's album 夏川りみセレクション contains this song as well as a few other pretty well known songs that were even covered by other Asian Chinese singers.

You can give www.cdjapan.co.jp a try. That's where i get all my Jap CD's...

  13. Hi guys does anyone know the original Jap female singer n the song title for this song 陪我看日出 by 蔡淳佳.thks

  14. In addition to Yotiao's post I would like to add some guidelines to protect all our equipment.

Please do not take offense as is not aimed at anyone but to ensure the safety and hygiene of the owner's equipment.

For smokers please do not smoke during the meet.

Try to bring a towel as it might get hot and sweaty.

Make sure your hands are clean before touching any equipment.

Please do not put any hair gel, clay, oil or hair styling products of any sort.

These are just some of the guidelines i can think of.

Once again please understand that these are to ensure the safety and hygiene of the owner's equipment.

PS: Anyone seen handling the equipment roughly or damaging the equipment on purpose will be asked to leave.

PPS: Owners have the right to ask you clean up before trying any equipment.

    Thanks all for now.

    Eugene

For those who are driving, just tell the guard house about the function room party and drive all thw way in to block 11 to park your vehicles. Note, you are only allowed to park at the upper level carpark and not the basement as basement is only for residents. Smoking is not allowed within the condominium premises.

There would be 100 chairs and 10 long tables measuring approximately (60 by 30 ) inches. So members who think that it may not be enough to host all our equipments can bring thier own tables....

For any further details, do PM me and we can contact either by phone or MSN...

And uh, yeah, talking bout cleaning up, for those who want to freshen up, there's a bathroom inside the function room and for those who want to take a quick shower, further down near to the mini mart, there's a shower room.

  15. Learning points from previous meets:

    1. Bigger the room, the better. This is limited by budget.

    2. Split up the room, one side for listening and the other side for socializing and food. Hifi equipment and food do not mix very well.

    3. Make sure there are enough sources i.e cd players or ipods and interconnects. Plenty of amps and headphone to go around but never enough sources.

    4. Bring our own power strips.

    5. Sufficient tables and chairs

    Hope this is helpful

So do you want me to book 1 or 2 function rooms? Rates are $160 total not including GST which is 7% and a downpayment of $400 for 2 rooms. Timing would only be from 1pm tp 5pm. Food and Beverages not included unless someone can help me with catering services...

I'd canceled the NUS' Cinnamon room, so it's going to be razer's place. Thanks razer. What is the full location?

Oh full location would be Tanjong Rhu Road, The Waterside condo, Function Room that's beside the poolside. For those who are driving, you can come in and turn right and follow the road all the way down till you reach block 11. Down there, there's carpark for you guys to park your vehicles.

  16. Dear all,

I am a father of 3 girls and I wanted to buy a headphone each for my daughters this Christmas. As my budget is limited. I am thinking of spending less than a $100 each for a headphone. I would prefer the on-ear type (not the clip-on or in-ear type). The usage would mainly be on the PC. The Audio Technica FC7 looks interesting. Can you advise what I should get?

How about the panasonic RP HTX headphones? They come in various different colours and have a retro look to them and are circum-aural meaning that they cover ur whole ear. But price is a little over a hundred quids. However, if your budget is strictly below $100, then I'am afraid I can't help you. Don't know much about headphones in that price range...

  17. What I heard was a brand new ES7, therefore maybe sounded bright. Maybe the sound characteristic would change after break-in. Therefore I said, it was not a fair comparison, because I tested the ES7 long time ago :)

    Thanks for your comments! :)

Haha, you're welcomed...Anyway, the meet would solve your queries. Just pop over and have a listen to the cans. :cans:
