  1. As long as the line output is on separate circuit from the headphones out, it should be ok. There are plenty of DACS with headphone output. All sound card are basically DAC. External sound cards normally comes with headphone out. For more professional use, they call it audio interface, and usually always come with headphones output, but also line outputs if we need to connect to external amplifier.

You may check some models and reviews here, on my friend's website:

    http://www.headfonia.com/?page_id=3032

    Ok, I'll have a look :)

  2. I suppose the output goes by several names, such as line-out, aux out etc. Not too sure if the term "pre-amp" is the same cos the pre-amp in hi-fi sense acts as a unit to prepare a signal for amplification (usually by a power amp). I might not be fully correct, so if there is a discrepancy in my definition, do correct me.

On a side note, which DAC are you looking at?

Ok... I'll have to read up on them. I'm looking at the Beresford Caiman. But now I'm thinking, maybe I should go for a smaller and more portable DAC.

  3. I guess it depends on whether the DAC/amp unit allows for bypass of the internal amp of the DAC. Most DAC/amps allow for that and in a way, there is no double-amping, which is seldom for soud quality.

I see... I'm rather new to the DACs and amps, so i'm not very familiar with them... by bypassing, is it the same as using the pre-amp outputs of the DAC?

  4. portable amps probably wont drive dt880s anywhere near perfection given their high impedance...

I'd say try them with tube amps like darkvoice 332, earmax pro, little dot MK IV or MKIII

Ok, will give them an audition..

gonna suggest a tube amp to pair with the 880, it'll give a lovely balance to your preferred music genres. and maybe wow you along the way. what's your budget?

My budget isn't alot actually, but if I can get the feel I want, I'll definitely be willing to fork out a little more.

Problem is, I'll be using it with my laptop often, so I guess I'll need a DAC to go along with the amp?

    X-CAN v3!

I think its still available new at Alpha Audio.

I've heard about them, but not auditioned them yet :P

  5. As above, but for my laptop and a DT880 (250 ohms)..

I went to test out the Go-Vibe and Go-Vibe Magnum yesterday, expecting the kind of sound quality I get from listening to music in Gramophone (kind of far fetched, but I was expecting something similar, given that the phones they use are entry lvl, and the amps don't look like expensive ones), and I just didn't feel the 'wow' factor when listening to my songs.. soundstaging wasn't as big as I expected, the songs weren't really crystal clear sounding, and all I could really feel improved vs my laptop soundcard was smoother vocals, instruments, better seperation, less coloured, and just easy on the ear. I'm not sure whether I was expecting too much, or is it just because the pairing of the dac/amp and headphones weren't that great.

So can anyone recommend something that pairs well with the dt880? I prefer instrumentals+vocals, jazzy/acoustic/easy listening/slow rock type of songs, with more emphasis on clarity of vocals, somewhat larger soundstaging (but more emphasis on instrumental seperation), and a more natural sound signature.

I'm new to amps and dacs, so I guess I got kinda carried away just reading off comments instead of going around trying them.. :innocent:

  6. Her songs are really good :))

I especially love her rendition of "Fields of Gold"..

By the way, does anyone know of where I can get guitar tabs from her version of the song? I've tried searching everywhere, but can't find it..

  7. But try this, use a new (supposedly better system) for a week then go back to your previous set up, it worked for me! It's sometimes what you don't hear that you take more notice of... of course YMMV!! yes.gif

Yeah, that was what happened when i moved on from cheap sonystyles to the a900... and which is also what make this hobby kinda wierd in the sense that once we move onto higher end equipment from lower end equipment, we have to more or less 'learn' to tell the differences.. which brings us to the point where if we don't want to 'learn' these differences, we will in fact not know what better sound quality is, which in turn means we don't really have to buy better audio equipment... not sure whether i explained clear enough, but i think you should more or less understand my point..

Maybe all along, we're just dealing with the contentment of being able to hear better sound quality.. and to be able to do that, we have to first 'learn' what it is... I would say that it's very different from the very first time where you get your very first audio player, which maybe came with stock or slightly better earphones.. and the only thing in your mind was just the music, nothing more.. Somehow, i feel that i couldn't really get that feeling back anymore.. my attention is now split between the music and the need to get better quality out of it..

Ok, i think the above pharagraph is gonna get me lots of flaming and i didn't know y i wrote that, but i did.. so YMMVA.. your mileage may vary alot.. still, i'm gonna try out the headphones again laugh.gif

My humble apologise if i offended anyone in any way with my comments.. mellow.gif

Argh.. need to get ready for tmr's bookin.. see you all in 3 weeks.. if i don't get more confinement tongue.gif

  8. Feel sad for you.. Nowdays, electronics spoils so easily.. and its always just after the warranty period.. dry.gif Bad Q.C.

I'm not sure whether the warranty is renewed after you got the replacement unit.. u gotta give em a call to check.. but if it's not, i bet repairs are gonna cost you a bomb.. unless you can get one of the diy guys to fix it for you..

  9. no offence man, but i tink you got problems with your ears

That's flaming if you didn't know.. hammer.gif Would your future replies please show some respect or at least some thought b4 you write them down? but whatever.. not gonna argue with you.. but like i said, this could be due to the factors ive listed.. that's y im gonna test em again.. and i didn't say that my hifi sounds similar to his cary player.. thank you... maybe we're just at a diff. threshold of contentment.. or you're used to listen to higher end equipment and therefore youre able to tell a bigger difference..
