  1. Ok.. today i went to a friend's house (won't reveal name) to listen to his grado 225, hd600 and his expensive cd players plus amp.. and got a really big eye-opener...

To me, i hear a diff. between the grados, senn and my a900, but overall, i could say that i was quite disappointed.. the difference between all of them was so slight that i don't think i can justify spending $200/300+ on them.. Yeah, i heard the more upfront sound of the Grados, i heard the more laid-back and smooth sound of the senns, but if you need me to give you a percentage of the differences between them, i would say that they are at most.. 5%.. maybe less.. Seriously, after hearing the diff.s, the first thing that came to my mind was that the diff. between the headphones are really really way overhyped in (the famous hp forum).. and the grados really didnt have as much energy and synergy as i expected.. anyway.. the best have yet to come..

I was allowed to connect the headphones from the $500 amp to the $5000 amp.. guess what? The same "logic" applied.. it sounded a tad smoother, a bit more detailed.. btw, when i say more detailed, it simply means i could hear just an additional guitar/drum being played.. i really don't get y these kinda details can be said to be "night and day differences"... in the end, lets just say im glad that i've not even bought an amp yet.. oh wait... theres more..

The headphones was connected to a Cary player.. i normally listened to songs on my Sharp mini hi-fi.. and from my memory, i still find that songs on my hi-fi feel kinda fuller.. but not as smooth and very slightly less detailed.. again, the smoothness of the cary, IMO is only say.. 5-10% smoother?

So in the end, i didn't get any hp from him although i was suppose to.. he was a nice guy to let me try them out first.. thanks laugh.gif today was really a big eye-opener for me..

B4 i end, i would like to remind everyone that this is purely my opinions.. YMMV.. but not by much rolleyes.gif i won't call myself having a good pair of ears nor experienced in high-end equipment, but i'm definitely not a newbie to this things.. i'm at least a rookie.. biggrin.gif And i'm looking at this from a music lover POV, not from a music critque's POV.. anyway, i WOULD really suggest newbies to REALLY audition any equipment that they wanna buy first.. if possible, at least a few hours.. and bring your other hp along to do A/B testing to spot diff.s... BTW, thanks, Mackie, for your past advices.. now i understand on the points you were pushing across ;P Well, you might argue that maybe i need some time to get out of the A900 sound.. who knows.. or maybe i have the so called tin-ears (not that i really care.. i just wanna enjoy my music.. haha).. but again, from my POV, the only reason why some pple can tell the diff between high and lower end equipment is probably becuz they've had the chance to use both of em for a longer period of time, thereby allowing their ears to "learn" what exactly is better sound.. i did, when i moved from the AT-CM3 to the A900.. and lets just say that the best way to do that is to buy em..

Ok, enough of talk.. i'll think i just stick to buying cds.. $2 for chinese/canto and $3 for eng/jap second hand at Cash Convertors.. just in case some of you dont know laugh.gif still, i think i should go try out the grados and the senn again.. maybe i'll hear some diff. after my 3 weeks OCS confinement.. rolleyes.gif

Comments/questions/opinions welcome.. flaming is off.. into the pool... yeah.gif

P.S. Do any of you know of any songs that are recorded in Binaural? Cuz so far, i've only heard of Binaural music, not songs..

  2. Tips is to tell them you are very interested loh & how low can they go loh.

Lol.. i think you should go the opposite way instead.. cuz if they know that you're interested and die die must get it, then they won't lower the price by much.. one trick that i can give (which doesn't always work) is to go there, don't make it so obvious that you're interested in the product, then quote a really low price, and wait for both partys to quote and quote till you get a satisfactory price.. else, just tell them that *insert* shop is selling it at this price, so if you don't sell it to me at that price, i'll leave... hopefully they'll call you back and sell it to you at/somewhere near that price.. haha.. picked up all this tricks from my mum.. you'll need it when you go to HK for shopping.. lol! Happy bargaining!

  3. Haiz.. sometimes i hear 'pops' in my right ear whenever someone shouts too loud or something similar... don't think its becuz of headphones though.. might be infection..

Anyway, i always tend not to believe so called 'findings' by scientists, cuz they always go through the accelaration method of testing and experimenting.. which of course would lead to worse results.. think about it... scientists have said that we'll die from eating too much rice.. (and they test that by stuffing rice into lab mice i believe, for every meal.. that's what they call researching.. sleep.gif") but have you seen anyone actually pass away for that reason b4? Nope right? So dont believe truely on what's been said..

I think the thing we should be more worried about are the radiation from talking too much on handphones..

  4. Nothing compared to what i've seen here.. but anyway, here's my main setup..

That's a Sharp mini hi-fi, given to me by my parents.. can't bear to sell it away cuz it holds sentimental value.. or i would have used the money to upgrade the player rolleyes.gif ...and beside it is my Audio Technica A900.. A pair of Grado 225 is coming my way, and a few months down the road, this will be a totally improved setup.. yeah.gif

  5. Lol... choosing a wife is a totally diff. matter.. many factors come into concern..

Anyway, i'm pretty sure we often choose what we buy based on what's been advertised/said as good/what's "right".. that goes the same for alot of things that we buy.. or do.. it just makes more sense, especially when it comes to something you're unfamiliar with.. but arguments aside..

I would like to try to audition the players over at KEC, but i really do wonder how do you all go about it.. i mean, won't the guys there know that you're auditioning their players without the intention of buying? I just feel that i will be in a very akward position, especially since i don't look exactly like i can afford or appreciate such stuff.. hmm.. btw, i don't see any Grados being displayed for audition from outside MBD.. are they all kept inside one of the rooms??

  6. Haha.. i know i'm getting too "enthu" with lots of threads springing up these few days... sorry bout that innocent.gif

Anyway, I've kinda planned to list down a list of "toys" to buy (source, amp, cans) that fits into a budget i'm comfortable with... and after hours of hours of research... i've finally came to a conclusion (i hope).. but i need comments from you people on whether the particular config is suitable..

    Source: Rotel 971 player

    Amp: Gilmore Lite

Cans: Senn HD580, ATH-A900 (which i already own), Grado SR225

First of all, i aim to have a set of affordable cans that suits a wide range of music, which explains the need for a Senn, an A-T and a Grado.

The reason why i chose the Rotel 971 is because its considered a neutral sounding machine (which i suppose is needed due to the wide sound range of the cans), and of course, its really really bang-for-the-buck!

As for the Gilmore Lite, i heard that it is a neutral sounding amp too.. but i seriously don't whether it's better to get a neutral sounding amp or to a more "musical" sounding amp.. opinions please??

Oh, and i need recommendations on interconnects to get.. preferbly $100+-

Btw, i don't really have plans to upgrade to better sources/amps/cans cuz as of now, i can't justify myself spending so much on these stuff.. ya.. so erm.. more opinions and comments on my choices please!! A big thanks to you laugh.gif

  7. What type of environment do you listen to music in?

For me, i live at the 11th floor, condo, and basically get i see miles away unblocked whenever i look out almost any window.. (the nearer buildings are basically bungalows/terraces, and the taller buildings are a few miles away) i like to listen to music in the night, looking out at the big open space of stars in the sky/ stare blankly in front of me, letting gusts of wind bypass me and just letting my thoughts go wild.. its a really nice and unique feeling when compared to just seating down on the chair in front of the cd player during the afternoon and concentrating on the song being played.. i'm lost in my own world innocent.gif

Any nice and unique experiences you all wanna share?? laugh.gif
