  1. hmmm...interesting huh..maybe when the cd is too old, too many data cannot be read, thus resulting in a lower quality sound. ;)

well, right now i also can't afford those mega expensive transport so I think I can live with a few bits of error correction. :D But again, even if I can afford I don't think I want to spend that much just to listen to those few bits... :)) I pursue better sound quality to enjoy music better, but not to perfect the sound.

  2. Btw, correct me if I am wrong Heady. My idea of using a dac is that it takes over the job of the cdp dac. so in this case, whatever raw data read from the cd is passed straight to the Monica for processing, instead of using the cdp own dac. Am I right? So will I make any difference in using my cd6000 as the source or a cheap discman or whatever with an digital out as a source? Right now, I got a feeling that i am under-utilizing my cd6000 by taking away half of its job...lol

  3. Haha...din know that ck and heady both of you have also bought the Monica. I also bought one, thanks to ck's recommendation... :))

Just fixed it up 2 weeks ago..got some ground loops issue then...really headache..

hmmm...are we using the same casing Heady? :)) looks similar huh...I din buy the SS stage cos I am using it to power my headphones. you all linking it up to your speakers? How does it compare to the amp6??

Anyway, after a few listens, I can say that the dynamics are better. More harmonics, so the music feels 'warmer', more 'analogue'? makes my headphone sounds a little more upfront though.

  4. Hi Heady, ok pls give me 2 sets with ONLY 2x "U4 - OPA690ID " as I have 2 extra pieces of AD8397ARDZ. Thank you very much.

Haha, ya, diy fever very hard to cure huh.. :P I also just finished another project.

Anyway, the Mini schematic build is similar to the PINT, and also using the same op-amp so I was wondering how the sound is going to compare. Any idea from the headwize threads?

  5. After around 200+ hrs of burn-in.

K701 Soundstage is finally on par with the dt880 I had. Its wide and 3d. Its still very different as I have stated before. Give you the feeling you are in a big room watching a performance from far unlike dt880 which is a huge room but u standing near the performer. The treble is fantastic now and clarity is gettign better. Couldnt tell much change in bass though.

Great, glad that you are enjoying the k701 and finally realize that the soundstage is not narrow at all :)) It really opens up after some burn-in.

  6. I have always wanted to compare the sound quality of China pressed and say Japan/US pressed cds side by side but I often don't want to waste the money to buy two copies so I just buy the cheaper ones and enjoy the muic :)

however, when I try to reason it out, I don't think those recording companies will press separately in China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, etc. just for the Asia market right? It don't make sense and cents to them. I think most likely they press in China and market them differently in different countries, like add some freebies, add some packaging...so I am wondering whether I am paying extra for those freebies when I buy CDs marketed as "Singapore version".

Also, maybe you guys can help on the pressing thing. Basically CDs are just 1s and 0s, data...so how pressing affects the reading of the signals, assuming they are the same 1s and 0s...?

  7. Hi,

I see more and more hawkers selling those CDs with versions, CD covers which are not those marketed in the CDs stores. Most of them are printed in China. I am wondering whether they are legal? And any chance that they are actually pirated CDs in disguise? And sometimes I also see some of those CDs store carry these China printed CDs, selling them at lower price than the Singapore versions they carry.

I actually bought them before and well, they sound not bad..

  8. haha...ya lor...so trying SS instead of tube ma..something different still right..haha..

hmmm..just lazy to check it up...how much does the non-oversampling DAC cost?? from diyparadise is it?? I kind of like that website..have many interesting stuff...

  9. i want to finish up the AMP 5...i bought it because I am thinking of getting speakers..but right now I got no space for speakers leh..so I should be taking my very own sweet time to get it done...lol

I am considering the CKIII because I want to try some SS amps since I already have the SOHA and the MHHA already....so what you guys think??

CK, is that DAC superior to what I have inside my Marantz CD6000??

  10. i remember koba selling transistors but I'm not so sure about opamps. anyway, you can always go there. It's on the top floor iirc and it's quite an all-in-one shop...

for soldering sets, there are also those 'branded' ones...personally i am using some cheapo types, those without temperature control, no stand..etc. it works fine but maybe for a start you can try to get some decent set with all this. a set should cost around $30-$40 maybe..?

  11. Hi guys, been a while since I visit here. So anyone engaging in any new projects? Recently I am thinking of starting on a ss amp for headphones since I already has 2 tube. Maybe the M3 or the CKIII from headwize.

Anyone cares to update me on this?? (Maybe will have to commit after my busy period is over though.. :D )

    Cheers!
