No swivel cups though, and they're huge, so it'll probably be big enough for your head. I believe they are available for testing at SE. They are relatively easy to drive as well.

The K701s have a reputation of being harder to drive than the Grados.

A headphone is recommended? I don't quite get that. Oops, as for my previous recommendation of the MS2i, it'll probably not be valid as you wanted something other than Grados.

How about the Audio Technica AD900? It's an open headphone and has a rather big soundstage. It's easier to drive as well.

Well, most people comment that the K701 is rather neutral. I agree, although I haven't really heard other headphones from the same level (other than the MS-pro, which is really different), and the listening session with the K701 was a short 5 min.

If I'm not wrong, they are about S$600 new.

The headphone's performance would vary quite a bit if you change sources. The laptop jack and a dedicated CDP / amplifier one would probably be really different, especially when the K701 isn't exactly the easiest headphone to drive.

About possible choice would be the MS2i (about $400+ if I am not wrong). You could try getting that used to save a bit and add in a headphone amplifier.

At the price, you could get a second hand K701, which does have a nice open-ness and flatness to it.

Also, what would you your source be?

So I was wondering , is it possible to mod a Crossroad dock to fit with the ZVM. I notice the pins are quite similar.

 

I don't really get you here, although I do know that there are Zen Vision:M line-out adapters which would allow the use of amplifiers through the dock at the bottom of the player.

Stereo Electronics allows you to try on headphones as well (unless they have made some sudden change in policy).

I'd advocate trying something better, just for the fun of it, so that you can know what to expect from a headphone/earphone which is above your price range. The Orpheus sure sounded good, but I don't have the temptation to upgrade from the K601 I have now (mainly due to financial constrains and lack of approval from the "relevant authorities").

Alpha Audio in Sim Lim has the CD5001 and the OSE version. The normal version is about $280 (if I am not wrong).

I believe the iPod 4th Gen supports ALAC which is another lossless format.

Ever since your last posting, the MylarOne X3 and XB have been released.

I personally find the X3 rather good, especially for a canalphone at the price point (though not all would agree) and it is within your budget. The XB would be the bassier version. Not really my cup of tea, but it looks better with the aluminum housing. There are new colours now.

Sim Lim has quite a few shops selling the CD5001. Alpha Audio on the ground floor is one of them.

I assume that the Aego-M uses a subwoofer amplifer. Hence, you could either use the RCA outs (together with the provided cables) to connect to the Aego-M subwoofer, so as to power the speakers themselves.

I should think that the Aego-M would come with a 1/8 inch to RCA input cable, hence, you could use a 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch adapter and plug it into the Marantz CDP's headphone out.

Whether it sounds sweet would depend on you.

Wow, the UE9 has had quite a reputation of being rather exclusive, given it's price. It's been compared by a reviewer (on headfi), to be a bit lower than the SR007, (though that is probably purely subjective).

The previous ultra-exclusive Ultrasone is the Edition 7, which was even more expensive than the Edition 9, and looked rather cheap (to me).

I don't really see why you would want to use a DAP at home, but I guess there are some merits (ability to listen around the house).

I would recommend the following.

Red Wine Audio iMod (DAP) --> RSA Hornet / Xin SuperMacro --> AD2000

However, I do realize that buying online is not so much of an option. Hence,

iAudio X5L --> RSA Hornet (you could wait till Jaben at Adelphi stocks them again) --> AD2000

To many, the MylarOne was better than the T20.

To me, (and many others as well), the MylarThree is better than the MylarOne by a whole lot.

You have been to Stereo Electronics. Jaben is at The Adelphi (opposite Funan Centre, near City Hall MRT), on the top floor, near the staircase.

256kpbs is probably enough, though you might want to try out a few files of different bitrates and see if you can tell the difference. It is a good idea to rip lossless, though it is rather space consuming and will probably not be very ideal for the battery life of your iPod.
