  1. ^I actually got interested after reading your review ^_^

More defined bass? Wow... im pretty impressed with how defined the bass is for the UM2s already, even with complys. What about soundstage?

Also, did u take an open or closed mouth impression? Aron recommended me an audiologist... so i guess i probably will go there next month... Curiousity is killing me and I just have to know how they sound like. :cans:

UE website recommended an open mouth impression. Have something to bite so your jaws won't move.

As do Westone (on their website too).

  2. any LDM+ owners staying in Bukit Panjang/CCK area?

having briefly spoken to a few of the forummers here and on head-fi, i can't help but have this niggling suspicion that i may have been shipped that normal gain set instead of the low gain set. so i'm hoping to do a quick one-to-one comparison over the weekend with a normal gain set to see if it is indeed the case.

or if anyone's bringing to LDM+ to Stereo any time soon, pls PM me too. Stereo isnt too far from home either. thanks in advance.

  3. ballet music (esp those by tchaikovsky and delibes) is my fav "sub-genre" of classical music. i'm sure the likes of nutcracker, swan lake, sleeping beauty have been recommended...but there are some other great ones like coppelia and slyvia too.

oh and try Dvorak's Cello Concerto and Haydn's Concerto for Trumpet.

  4. hehe i'm using a lineout from audiolineout.com with my iPod...seeing how this lineout costs more than the LDM+ itself, it had better not be the problem heh.

i remember reading somewhere on head-fi...someone review another amp and was likewise struck by the amt of hiss. fortunately for him, this hiss went away with some burn in. i hope this is the case for me too.

  5. my opinion is most phones will benefit with a decent amp; it's just a matter of how much portability you want to trade off for the perceived sonic improvement.

so far my tin ears have felt the bass tightening up a little with the UM2. still waiting to see if the soundstage will open up. it has also been said that the LDM+ should bring out the treble abit more too but we shall see. i've decided to charge the batt first i'll let the unit burn in together with my line out.

    in the meantime,

i'm surprised that there is a very audible hiss when i plug my UM2 into the LDM+ with no source connected. i'm curious, cos i'm already having the unit with lower gain. even stranger is that the hissing is loudest at a slight turn of the knob (from the on/off position) and then becomes softer as the knob is turned to increase volume. finally, at the maximum vol position the hiss disappears...

when i have a source (iPod + lineout) connected, the hissing becomes very audible with the knob at lowest and at maximum volume; hissing is faint (but audible nonetheless) at somewhere near the middle position. all observations were made with the whole set up running on battery power.

err can anyone explain if this is normal? paiseh, this is my first amp, you see.

it seems that the hissing is due to high gain. although the gain has been lowered, i guess the um2 is too sensitive and picked up the sound. is there a difference in sound when u use the um2 with amp and without amp ?

one reason for my astonishment at the level of hiss was that with my FL100 player alone (which was what i was listening to on my way to meeting you just now heh), the UM2 picks up very minimal hiss.

throw in the LDM+ and the hissssssssss comes out so much that it really bothers me. luckily i got the low gain version; cant imagine what it'll be like on the normal gain with the UM2. for now i shall go look up the head-fi LDM+ thread to see what may have been said abt this.

  7. i say it really depends on the individual. for some 192 is enough, for others they will die without FLAC. if you have the time, i suggest you do some sort of test on yourself - rip a few songs at the various bitrates and hear for yourself. identify the point at which the tracks become more or less undistinguishable from CD quality.

for instance, in the comfort of my own home, where it is much quieter and makes for a better listening environment, i felt i had to go up to 256 kbps; anything under that makes the sounds feels constricted and narrow, like it's just not coming out.

but when i'm on the go, 192 is quite enough to keep me happy. for some recordings, even 128 will do. haha i certainly do not have golden ears.

    i have a track that is 5:30 min long - at 128 kps it's 5.1MB, at 192 it's 7.6 kbps, at 256 it's 10.2 MB. when encoded in Apple Lossless it is 35.5 MB, in AIFF it's 55.7 MB.

  8. HEhe.. ehh... love the UM-1. I tried the Um2 too.. Yes the sound quality improved over the um-1, but only marginally i felt. Probably it was my mp3 player as sony ones reproduce with a higher bass.

Funny thing was i wasnt blown away by how the UM-2 sounded. Im not sure why either. The improvement wasnt worth the increase in price in my opinion. So the weak bass of UM1 sort of got compromised with the bass sony delivers and wala, i have the um-1 now.

urgh. wished i felt the same way as you did. i like bass. and somehow um2 and um1 felt like worlds apart to me. and um1 sounded much too forward for my liking too.

throw in the nice low profile and comfort level (compared to the UE i had), and there i was sold on the um2 =/

  9. Isn't the prices at 'Announcements/Offers' forums?

I like both shops. Its a real pity that Stereo is a little too far for me. (Or maybe its a blessing...if not spent a lot more!) I like Stereo for their sheer varity. Lots of stuff! Jaben for its location and intimate quiet environment. Excellent for spending sometime there listening to headphones.

i know how you feel. Stereo's only a 15 min bus ride away from me =/

  10. shhh dont say you heard this from me hor...but apple doesnt always ask you for verification for the edu advantage eligibility. but if they, you'll have to fax them some sort of proof.

anyway, maybe you have cousins, errr or nieces or nephews who are thinking of switching? time to nudge them over then.

  11. actually i think i'll change my order to a low gain LDM+ for my UM2.

  12. heh there,

my first post here. have been doing some reading up and have somehow decided that i'll be getting both the CK7 and the UM1. that will set me back for abt $300...so i was thinking whether that will be wise. i mean, for $300 am i better off buying something else?

i dont actually need 2 sets of earphones, but i seem to like both for different reasons and i can see myself using them for different kind of music.

any advise anyone? thanks in advance.
