  1. after getting into this head-fi stuff, I'm quickly counting the cost of the hobby - of course its worth it ;)

just wondering though, if this high end stuff is catching on in singapore for modern cans e.g. GS-1000,ATH-W5000, stax omegas or even the exotic ones e.g, K1000, HE900, HE60, amps etc....

are there any "meets" organized locally ?

  2.

Crash diet. It's sad. Her voice was really great, excellent vibrato.

her singing style is firstly very relaxed. she never seems to struggle. soothing to the point where one's guard is easily let down to really listen to the music.

I had her SACD collection cd.

which did you think had the best sound quality ? I have a copy on CDR (remixed - my edit ) and was surprised to find even my "home transfer" comparable to some "audiophile" CDs i have.

  3. The signal is digital in nature. As long as the light intensity doesn't degrade over a certain level, the signal is lossless.

thats what I've been reading so far. so it probably means a reasonably built cable will go a long way.

nevertheless, conventional behaviour seems otherwise - there are more coax-digitalcables around than optical ones (new and used). however just judging by what equipment suppliers offer - high end designs come with optical inputs/outputs almost all the time.

    thanks pegasus21 - you've been a great help ^_^

  4. Thanks for the replies.

I finally found one optical cable from the mac shop in funan that has adaptors on BOTH ends of the cable. my cdp has a 3.5mm optical out, and yes it only works if powered via AC.

Do these optical adaptors degrade signal quality like the analog audio ones ?

  5. wow - the only parts are understand is that is starts as coax and ends as toslink. is there any degradation with this connection over the pure optical/coax one ?

anyway I'm actually asking about an optical connection -

    - on my dac is the regular optical squarish plug

    - on my portable CD player, the portable-out is actuall a perfectly round 3.5mm jack.

  6. Hi, I'm new to this, and wanted to see how folks here are setting up their PC Audio systems to best effect:

I hope to capture details such as:

    • PC or Mac
    • software ripper name e.g. lame
    • ripping settings e.g. bitrate, file type
    • audio output settings e.g. win xp driver or ASIO
    • brand of external dac
    • optical/coax cable brand/type etc

I'm particularly interested in folks trying to setup for best sound, including lossless or near lossless.

Please also include any interesting details/options like wireless streaming or NAS data setup.

I'll post mine when I set it up !

  7. Hi Razer,

Maybe you would want to check with Kingsley(Stax SG distributor)? Was quoted SGD $6K for OM2 + 007 quite sometime ago. Not sure abt the price for 007II.

i checked last week - and was quoted $5800 - supposedly lowest ever price only for regulars. coincidentally, the dealer's name is mikhail.

  8. Looking for pair of good RCA interconnects, prefer short length if possible (e.g. 0.5m), but must be generally well reviewed or have good word-of-mouth. willing to try commercial/DIY too. Please PM your best offers with details e.g. age, condition, box/receipt etc. Thanks.

  9. good post - i'm a hifi nut thinking about going into headphones. have a teac-based source, plus a whole load of stuff, but they fixed in my living room.

there's probably a few ways to set up a good system, the fun is to optimise it within a budget and lifestyle - hence my lurking around here.

the part that interests me is the lossless CD ripped into HDD - its essentially jitter free, unlike any but the best CD players - with memory prices plunging this is the way of the future - by skipping the middleman-medium which is the CD (or any other form), data-> DAC -> output will be the shortest, most faithful chain around.
