  1. Previously, I had a problem with my CDP. The CD tray works fine but it doesn't spin the disc at all.

I had initially thought either the rotor or something in the tray mechanism that is not functioning properly. However, after some troubleshooting, it was found that the transformer for the digital sections of my CDP is dead, therefore the CDP couldn't even work at all. Only the mechanical section of the transport is still working because it uses another transformer.

Changed the transformer and the problem was fixed.

  2. I have spoken to Farnell's CSO about this and she tells me that if:

    1. order online, total before GST > S$30 = free delivery.

    2. order by the phone, total before GST > S$50 = free delivery.

Else I need to pay S$10 for delivery. Very different from your version. I've only ordered the parts from them 2 weeks ago.

  3. I usually use the optical out from my CDP and connect it to the Sharp MD recorder. The MT-888 comes with the optical cable.

If he wants to transfer from PC, I had the original Sharp USB->S/PDIF converter which I use to transfer from PC to the 888. It was $90 when new, I can let it go for much less than that. PM me for info. Software wise, Creative's software actually includes a simple program to line up the files and transfer to the MD. You can change the software to change output to the Sharp USB converter.

  4. Tough, because the Sharp models mentioned above have already been discontinued. The DS8 was never available in Singapore. I've bought it through bluetin. I believe there are no more than 10 units here in Singapore. The DS8 is an MD player-only version of the DR7. Therefore, the DR7 sound would be very close to the DS8. It's a perfect fit with the Sharp MD-33 earbuds because of the 4-poles connector. Sharp MT888W is hard to find as well.

I would recommend your friend to get the Sony RH-10 but I wouldn't want to buy it locally. The Sony RH-10 from Japan comes with the Sony stick LCD remote but the local set comes with a LCD-less remote. The colour range is also limited to silver and black while the Japanese set comes in blue, orange, sliver and black. The OLED screen on the RH10 looks fantastic but the RH910's screen looks mediocre. It's around $450 for the local set but it would probably costs close to $600 for the Japanese set.

  5. The Horenstein #8 is available for borrowing at the Esplanade library. Very interesting. It's a live recording, in 1954. Of course, mono, but reproduced as man made stereo. Interm of performance, this is my #1 choice ! Especially the final climax. Too great a reading !

    hi LaoMao,

Is the Horenstein #8 from BBC? I saw it at HMV Heeren but the year recorded on the back of the CD cover says 1959 (IIRC).

  6. For SGD$1000 budget, I would recommend the cayin Ha-1 as a very versatile tube amp. Check it with the local guys on this little wonder. Costs only ard SGD$600. Has an impedenze switch behind in case you care about driving certain headphone. Up to 600omh i think.

    Good luck!

Do note that tube-rolling may be necessary to bring the best out of the Cayin and that may add substantially to the overall costs.

  7. hi wil,

After reading your initial account with the buzzing sound, I suddenly realise that I'd that problem previously. The buzzing will go off after the amp has warmed up and the source of the problem was with one of my EL84 tube. Once the tubes were changed, the buzzing just stopped.

One thing to note though, my LED didn't flicker at all.

  8. hi all,

I'm sharing a website below where Gmail users share their invites. My buddies and I got our gmail accounts from there. Please note that when you first arrive at the website, there will be a set of "encrypted" numbers which appears but this number is only valid for a short while so if you linger at the site for quite a while, just hit the refresh button for a new set of numbers.
