  1. I am interested if you are having 1.

    stephen,

I may not order so soon as I don't have time for it yet. Will KIV first or maybe wait for the offer for the full kit.

May also want to wait for mouz's update first before we proceed with this project.

    mouz,

I think sharing or group buy on the parts is another way to save costs or reduce the unnecessary stock of excess components.

who knows, hands itchy and i'll dive into this proj

  2. agree with hdrcorp on he comfort of ES7. I can live with the finger print on the protector but it's not very comfortable hanging around the neck and after listening it for more than 30 minutes. Not the heat but the sponge is some how not fitting my ears (or is it the other way round? wondering if changing to a bigger ear pad is possible)

Isolation isn't good enough to keep the MRT noise or people noise out...still not getting use to it after using the in ear type for too long.

Other than ANC7, any other noise cancelling headphone around with budget below $300?

I saw goldring ear/headphone at adelphi but no idea how much and how good is it...but it's open type though.

  3. Thanks Alvin/JunYang for sharing the finding/thoughts.

As a layman in electronics/circuit design, I can't really tell technically it makes sense to match and how the reading may change in the real circuit.

Even from the user point of view, I may not even notice the difference if I don't have another identical amp to compare the effect of different components in terms of brand and reading has over its performance.

For now, finger crossed and hope that it will sing when it's done

  4. here are the updates : (photo to be added tomorrow...battery flat..charging now :bash: )

Costs (All approx as I seldom track so detailed) :

S$130 Casing from the group buy incl shipping (still waiting)

S$80-100 Components from Mouser (Shipping FOC as total > S$130 combined with parts for other proj)

S$30-50 for boards and tubes from beezar (rough estimate  )

Bought a cheap DMM that can measure HFE for approx $18 from koba

Luckily most of the transistor for 2N5087 and 2N5088 can be matched and paired.

    - 2N5087 are from the same batch so they are all in 490-495 range...I assume the DMM is working

    - 2N5088 has wider range from 430-620, almost all can be paired and match with less than 50HFE gap except for one pair which cause 100HFE difference but since I want to complete the build... I didn't use them in the critical positions but they are in.

Board are 90% populated...still thinking whether I should order Muse ES or other "boutique" caps for the output positions. Otherwise it should be 99% complete by now. 1% for the missing caps I forgot to order :shifty:

  5. heady...digging up this old thread.

i am looking for options to upgrade from my current Trends 10.1 amp. I find the Trends amp is loud enough but work hard to drive the bookshelf. So I'm thinking whether amp 5 or amp 10 will be able to do a better job and can be used if I upgrade my speakers later.

Or...do you have any other recommendations?

Tried to look for tube amp too but not sure I really want to go that path yet!!

  6. Found this in the Millet Max construction note :

    Matching Transistors -

A good place to start the Max is to match the transistors. In the case of the Max, this means the 2N5087 and 2N5088 transistors. Matching the JFETs and BJT output transistors has limited usefulness. Matching the MOSFETs if you use that option is a good idea...........

Is the matching really necessary? Did you match the transistor when you build your Max?

For Minimax, if the set up is BJT Diamond, but for Max it has limited usefulness...confused..

  7. OK...collected the little box from singpost this morning...pcb and tubes are nicely packed in the box...

    IPB Image

    IPB Image

    :dance::thumbup:

box is delay, parts are coming in early next week from mouser...they are having promotion for order above S$130 Fedex free shipping is provided so decided to just order all from them...lazy to source for the parts from Farnell one by one again :rclxub:

not sure the photo are too big here :smoke:

  8. I bought the ES7 from Stereo and until now hardly use it as I am afraid I may scratch the shiny headphones..

Is it possible to gmask it? I haven't seen the sticker but based on my experience with the handphone screen protecter, after a while the edge will peel off or trap dirt....or maybe it's just my usage :)

I have this gmask thought over my mind in the last few days but want to know if it worth it ...hahahaha

  9. It's started at this Headfi thread HERE

Poisoned by the enclosure group buy HERE  So I dive in and ordered the casing

Ordering my pcb HERE soon...money..money...money

Found people mentioned Blackgate from HERE

Question : Is Blackgate really worth getting? Does wellaudio stock them?

(I'll try to update this thread when I have more info)

  10. adn6244, minimax pcb out already? Tot I saw on head-fi that it'll be available at glassjar after the cases are done. Weird way of doing things though, tot it's always PCB first than cases... Too bad I already got the normal max board. Otherwise, i'd have waited for this.

    mouz,

    Email from Beezar :

    2. The MiniMAX PCB's will be available at Beezar sometime this week. So, you can order this week and build the MiniMAX completely except for the case. The case will not be ordered until invoices and payments are processed. I am setting a deadline of 10/25/2008 for that, with the cases being ordered at Lansing the immediate Monday after that, 10/27/2008. There is still a 28-working day timeline for manufacturing the cases. So, the earliest I will be able to ship the cases will be Wednesday, December 10, 2008.

So we will have to buy the board/kit and start working on it and by the time I finish, I should have received the enclosure :rclxms: and If everything goes right...I will have a nice Xmas gift :wub:

  11. I know I enjoy the process although sometimes it's really painful to gather info, read up, gather parts, read up, sort out parts, change parts, solder, desolder.....done....and ...

throw in the drawer ....cause ... 2 ears, one amp one dac max at a time...and time is limited . .. . .. .

    Then build again, start again....did I learn anything ... plenty...but did I learn to stop...never :rclxub::smoke::D

I just burnt a big hole in my pocket ....I ordered the Minimax enclosure...going to get the board soon

  12. Just want to find out from you guys...

what did you all do with the finished DIY project...ie you all built so many amps, dac...but you only have a pair of ears and so little time to :cans: but soldering need practice :innocent:

I built the jaben cmoy, Neomini RA1 & minidac, amb Mini3 but most of the time I am using Mini3 only

I still have a few unfinish projects with me and this makes me think whether I should order more and stock up first..ha ha ha ha ...
