  1. Hmm, you never know till you try, as in for the Senns and the AKGs (based on what you said, I don't think you have heard them).

The AKGs require a decent amp. If you do have one, they'll probably be good. You could stop by Jaben to try them (I saw a K601 in a cardboard box in the open). I could probably give you a good deal, in my opinion, on my K601 (haha, possible chance for upgrade for me). :P

Remember though, the AKGs are open headphones. Is there any reason why you'd rather closed headphones?

Yea, true. I have not heard them myself. Those are based on several reviews I have read from head-fi. But most of them(top range), dont seem to be recommended for music genres like Hip-Hop/ Rap/ R&B?

I have a open headphone now, and I will always hear something from the surroundings(at home), such as the fan, talking or others. So Im looking for a closed phone that have at least some isolation, and portability will be a plus for me too. Anyway, I have a CKK3 amp coming up, it should be rather decent.

  2. No, it's not possible

Like most electronic devices, there's efficiency factor in the regulator. The regulator ic (LM7812 in this case) will need an input power to power its operation, that is to regulate the output voltage to 12 V, it needs 12 V to be passed through and additional voltage to power its circuit.

Usually they need at least 3V up from the regulated voltage and achieve max output current at 5-6V above regulated voltage. It's quite inefficient, if I'm not wrong there's another linear regulator IC that's more efficient but I can't remember the number). Other alternative will be to use switching mode power supply (instead of linear regulator).

The 24V limit is set by the electrolytic capacitor C2 with voltage rating 25V.

If the input is already regulated I think you can remove the 7812 IC and connect the input to output node directly, leave the common node open.

Oh, I see... Thanks for the reply and insight 1bit!

  3. ezzo: Please be understanding that I don't work 24/7 a week and therefore sometimes I simply cannot/choose not to reply a PM within 24hrs. Being sarcastic in my PM will not get you anywhere.

    Sorry for the OT. :b2t

    LOL.

Let me tell you, I am NOT trying to get anywhere.

Look at you. You call this friendly service?

Must be kidding me. Are you trying to jack me in public?

I wouldnt even bother msg-ing you the second time if I didnt think you was friendly.

You sure you run a shop too? And expect me to purchase from you the next time by doing so?

    Everyone judge for yourselves.

    Disappointment.

  4. Andrew, there are no shops I know which assemble amps for customers so you are better off buying one, either a DIY amp being sold or a commercial made amp.

If you stay in the North and don't like to visit the city area, then Stereo Electronics is the right place. If you prefer to visit the city, then Jaben in Adelphi is the place. Both places have many amps for you to audition and purchase. And the staff are friendly. You can't ask for more. We are very fortunate in SG for having two good shops.

    Are you a paid promoter?

    LOL.

  5. Closed? I can think of the Audio Technica A500/700.

No swivel cups though, and they're huge, so it'll probably be big enough for your head. I believe they are available for testing at SE. They are relatively easy to drive as well.

Haha. I dont exactly have a *big* head actually, well. Haha. Whats the price of AT A700? Yea. Gotta hear them out.

Anyw, impedance isnt much of a concern for me since I hav a headphone amp for it.

  6. Hi,

I looking for a headphone for listening to music genres like Hip-Hop, R&B, Rap, Electronic.

I am willing to spend up to $400, does not matter if they are closed or open phones.

Bass is a big factor for me, it got to have good quality, punchy bass but I'm def not a "basshead".

I do like to blast my headphones once in a while too, Sr60 sure dont serve that purpose well - it gets too bright.

Well, a all-rounder, audiophile standard headphone is def preferred too, considering the price I'm paying :D

I only have a Grado SR60 with bowls currently.

For amps, I have a mini^3 now and CKK3 coming up.

    Current contender(s):

    Denon D2000

    Beyers DT990 (2005/Pro?)

    EDIT: Or Senns HD580?

All suggestions and comments are welcomed!! :D

  7. Music is like food. Everyone has their own preferences.

To me, its almost like a vicious cycle. First you get better headphones, next you would want a capable amplifier to drive it, then comes a good source...oh wait there is still the interconnect. Lol.

(many will not agree with me)

If you can afford, go for it. 1k is a considerable amount. Might be better spent off something else.

Otherwise, lets not be so materialistic. Haha.

Well, you dont need a great system to enjoy great music. Enjoy!

  8. Gilmore lite LE's internal design is the same as the non-LE version.

(I wish not to say more as I would not like to undermine the product)

A Limited Edition product is obviously limited, which also mean it is out of production, with the number of units produced.

In other words, its really obvious what LE means, you dont need to explain it.

We should stop this, its not a place for discussion.

Do it somewhere else if you wish.

Regardless, jmmtn4aj, take this as bumping up your thread - free advertising. My apologies.

MOD EDIT: Removed all discourteous remarks. And I don't see why you are continuing with this discussion when you are evidently aware that it is against the regulations.

  9. I believe all the parts was below S$50 but remember the parts I bought are not boutique parts. And this was about a year ago. Anyway, old man also got bad memory... :))

The relays are for the output protection board from AMB.

Oh I see.. Thats cheap compared to the one from glass jar audio man. Those there arent exactly boutique parts either, just bust better vishay/dale resistors and panasonic fc and nichicon uhe caps. Though the alps and hammond enclosure alone cost US$38.

  10. I have a SOHA which I built and then took apart so I could case it. I bought the SOHA board in a group buy here. I could source all the parts from Koba. I was waiting for the output protection board to arrive from AMB together with my Mini3 pcb. But I am wondering if I can find the relays etc in SLT.

I am just wondering how much did it cost you in total, without the enclosure, to build the SOHA amp?

Its rather hard to find the pcb now though. The relays as in?

This site also sells the SOHA PCBs, usd18 for 2: http://www.assemblycraft.com/

But any case, the kit seems reasonable priced with alps p.meter and hammond enclosure.

    What do you guys think?

  11. Guys,

Just a tip, if you are building this, please try to include a protection relay into the output. During the time the tube need to warm up, the amp can send DC current into the headphones, burning up the drivers.

AMB sells a board for this OR you can just ensure your earphones are NEVER plugged in when turning on the SOHA. A delay of 10s is said to be sufficient for the tube to settle down.

    Regards.

Oh I see, thanks for that man. I probably would not have known if you did not mention it

  12. I am utterly amazed by a limited edition AMPILFIER.

WOW. Aint that amazing? Thats a first for me. A amplifier going limited edition.

Its a AMPLIFIER dude. Whats the difference with it by the way? The colour? LOL.

Not like its some really great amplifier anyway.

Maybe you should have thought about it before buying. Then you would not have to make a loss now.

MOD EDIT: Thread crapping is strongly disencouraged. Please observe the tone of your postings as well.

  13. Interested in the lvl2 set, any idea how much it will cost in the end? less or more than $SGD200 with shipping?

Did a conversion without shipping and its as follow.

    119.85 USD = 182.024 SGD

    Level 2 SOHA kit

The kit includes all the parts needed to build Digi's v3 board of the Cavalli, Lovell, Pasculle Stoopid Opamp Hybrid Amplifier. It features Vishay / Dale resistors, Panasonic FC, and Nichicon Muse UKZ capacitors, an Avel Lindberg torroid 30VCT 500 mA, a tested old stock 12AU7 tube, hammond silver enclosure, TI Soundplus Opamp and a Alps RK27 Blue potentiometer. Black enclosures are an option, as are auricaps at C2 and C14.

I would expected the total cost to be slightly more than S$200. Since the kit includes the transformer and the enclosure, the weight of the kit will not be very light. So shippings cost is definately more than US$10.
