  1. I have been long eyeing this DVD of Heifetz. I had seen the documentary very very long ago on TV and since then cannot forget Heifetz final entry in the last movement of the Scottish Fantasy, he himself conducting.

I am aware that this is available on VHS but finally the DVD version arrived. My friend from US hand carried this to me so not sure whether this DVD already available in Singapore.

Picture quality is so-so, probably due to the old age of the original. Title of the DVD is 'Heifetz in Performance'. All the footages of Heifetz performing are in black and white. Sound is mono.

A music CD came with this DVD and fairly good recordings and most of them in stereo!

Heitetz lover should not go very wrong with this.

    Hi fuwen,

Hey, I think I saw the tv programme to many many years ago..

may I know where could be found in Singapore ? thanx

Hi! Sorry, as I said I got mine from overseas so really not aware who is selling in Singapore. Guess u can try HMV or Grammophone (near Capitol building that one).

  3. This is another audiophile recording by Chai Qin.

Ji Yu SACD HE-305A Godot Theatre/High End Records

I believe is a Taiwan production. The piano performance and recording are very good. As for the vocal recording, I was not very conviced listening to the normal CD version but was quite please with the SACD version. There is also a XRCD version (but somehow cover colour scheme is in yellow and brown).

However a lot of talking in this album, as I guess the music and songs were originally written for a stage drama. Music are slow moving though.

Mackie told me in some other forum this is called the 'Toad Album'. I do really have quite a bit of fun with track 6. Besides the very nice performance and recording, I like to 'catch' the toad/frog sounds in the later part of the track. So far I believe there are a total of 9 toads/frogs. I will list down the track time the toad appeared (SACD version) and for those already owned the CD and managed to catch some more do let me know!

    2'27

    2'44

    2'51

    3'09

    3'12

    3'16

    3'22

    3'34

    3'44

On a speaker system u need late at night to catch them all. On the headphone I think it is easier. However u still need to concentrate and sometime u over-concentrate u start to 'imagin' the toad/frog and get the wrong count.

    Enjoy!

note: On a speaker system the toad is located at the right bottom. It is always there but make noise at different time. Of course the toad calls are not very load as this track is not for u to listen to toad singing anyway!!

  4. Wow you got elephant memory man. Can remember the price even hehehe

I too had a Practica MTL50 body (fully mechanical)with 2 Carl Ziess Jena and one pentacon lenses.

Dear Rameish, imagin I have been eyeing at cameras but cannot afford for so long (since secondary sch, 1978) and how can I ever forget the price I paid for my first personal SLR(1985/86)? LOL!

Anyway I dun mind taking over your MTL50 set if u want to let go cheap ...... haha! But BTW is that the set Firefox is using lately? But I thought he told me something else over at Clubsnap ..........wink.gif

  5. It really amazes me that you kept all your old gear. Are they all in working condition?

Hi! They are old gears but are actually my working gears. I would say almost 99% of them are in working condition. But nowadays I am using Rollei and have not been using Praktica for quite a while already. Since Praktica is the set I began photography with so will not sell them away because of sentimental value.

  6. Hi! Rameish, lucky that u can have a close look at the then newly launched SL 2000 F. I cannot remember what was I doing then in I think was 1981-1982? Oh yes I was studying in Junior College and must be very busy in the Chinese Orchestra then. I could not afford any camera stuff until my 2nd year in NUS where I got some spare money from industrial attachement and bought my first camera: Praktica BC-1 (1984) with a 50/1.8 Pentacon for $350(shown in the photo is a 55/2.8 macro Prakticar). Not aware that Praktica was actually East German but nevertheless no regret as the lens quality is very good. Not really so with the body but mine has been working till today and no problem.

I do remember eyeing at Rollei stuff when I was in secondary school. The one on the left the Rolleiflex SL 35E (1978 - 1982). Never even ask price but luckily never otherwise sure had fainted! This is a very nice looking and compact camera but however lots of electronic problem so should be avoided.

  7. An interesting audiophile recording:

    Antiphone blues FIM SACD 050

A very rare combination of saxophone and chruch organ. The recording was done in such a way to reproduce the echo in the church. Music in this CD are slow but very nice.

Available in CD, gold CD and SACD version. I do not remember seeing a XRCD version.

I do not have a normal CD with me at this moment but I think there are few 1994 recordings not include in the normal CD version. Will confirm this. There are total of 15 tracks in the SACD.

  8. These are my working cameras(left to right):

Rolleiflex SL66, made 1966 to 1982. Fully mechanical medium format 6x6 SLR, bellow focusing. Bellow is able to tilt. The bellow has 50mm extension so act also as a build-in macro tube. The standard lens 80/2.8 can be reverse mounted without additional attachment or accesories.

Rolleiflex SL 2000 F, made 1981 to 1986. Fully electronic 35mm SLR with build-in vertical finder, 3 fps motor drive (or winder) and modular film magazine like medium format camera. TTL flash possible.

Rollei 35RF, a very recent rebadged Cosina. Fully mechanical range finder using Leica M39 lens or M bayonet lens. Top speed 1/2000, flash syn 1/125, comes with a 40/2.8 Sonnar that is exactly the same lens used on the Rollei 35 S I have posted. Shutter is far from quiet though.

  9. Hi,

I have just purchase the Pocket Amp 2. I inserted 2 AA batteries however i could hear hissing sound ( identicle  to the sound when you are tuning the radio) when the volume is at minimum. I use the normal lithium batteries. Do you guys who uses this amp encounter the same problem? Do you think the problem wil be resolve when if i were to use rechargeable batteries ? Please kindly enlighten me. Thanks

      unsure.gif

To my understanding, it's not stated on the website that "normal" 1.5volts AA batteries can be used. it's best to use rechargeable 1.2volts batt.

Also check your interconnect cable as mine doesn't have hiss even at max. volume.

I remember Gary did say that he is using 3V circuit so alkaline battery should be OK. However since the battery is connected to the external DC in if u are using alkaline or non-rechargeable batteries make sure do not connect the amp to ext DC with batteries inside as the batteries will be charged and thus may deform or explode.

As Mackie said I would think it is best sending Gary an email as the unit may be faulty.

  10. I do have a CD and a DVD of Leonid Kogan performing Beethoven Violin concerto. IMHO he is not as good as those I have recommended and Oistrakh, YMMV. Normally I would recomend only stereo recordings and I believe most of the people will enjoy more. My copy of Leonid Kogan is in mono recording. I guess only people who really understand this work will appreciate it in mono mode.

  11. Some of the girls I met, although not into headfi/hifi, they do have a very headfi/hifi ears. A couple of my friends and myself will always bring along wife for equipment audition and we want their 2nd opinion and often turns out to be quite accurate. Some of them do have very sensitive ears (though may not be headfi/hifi ears if I can put it this way)

  12. This is a nice collection for Brahms lovers:

    Johannes Brahms Quintette . Sextette

    (op. 18, 34, 36, 88, 111, 115) DG 419875-2

    A total of 3 CDs.

I do not listen a lot to Brahms so not sure whether this is a complete collection of his chamber music with 5 and 6 members in a group.

The main performers are Amadeus Quartet and with other performers to make up the extra viola, cello, piano or clarenet.

In particular I am quite moved by 2nd movement of String Sextet op 18 (CD1 track 2), the first movement of Piano Quintet op 34 (CD2 track 1), the last movement of String Quintet op 88 (CD2 track 7) and the first movement of Clarinet Quintet op 115 (CD3 track 5).

  13. Sorry, not super shuffle, just an ordinary 512mb one. My very first MP3 player ever! Compact, convienient and the itunes software is a breeze to use. Sound quality is suprisingly good too. Great for the office and everywhere else. Goodbye chunky discman.

Hi! av98m, are u using it with a portable amp? A portable amp and a good headphone/earphone will do more justice to Shuffle sound quality.
