  1. Regarding the high reliability part, i am not sure if the price ranges you want will give you the many highs you want. But price wise, if you got friends going to China, ask them to bring one back for you. A friend of mine got a soldering station (with LOTS and LOTS of accessories) for a mere <100RMB, which is less than 30 SGD. Check out the Chinese sites.

If you are buying local, the cheapest station with LCD is the one i found at farnell. About 95~108 SGD.

hakko's station are pretty hard to get, their distributor here seems to be sleeping.

I havent toured SLT because i am lazy, but if you scout around there maybe you may find some hidden treasures.

  2. I think what blackmouth0 meant is that the D3 does not use battery power when you are connect via USB only if you are using the D3 purely as a dac and using the "input" jack as your output. If you use the D3 as a dac+amp (meaning you are still connected to the "output" jack), you are still using the batt.

I came to this conclusion because no sound comes out of D3 if i am connected via USB/using the output jack/and there is no batt in the D3.

connected via USB > earphone connected to "input" > using D3 as dac > no batt power is consumed

connected via USB > earphone connected to "output" > using D3 as dac+amp > batt power is consumed.

  3. Need to charge in pairs, hence you need at least 6 batts. I use a 4 batt charger, hence i charge 4 at a time, and after that the remaining 2.

For me i alternate between alkaline and rechargeable.

Its a less than ideal solution, but i lived with it pretty well :)

  4. I think its quite interesting.. That you didnt use your HP to test out the headphone before you buy? That will be your main source.

Instead of a amp, have you tried using a real mp3 player to power that headphone? Maybe you should consider carrying a mp3 around with you instead. Other than looking better (definitely), it could be a waste for you to use a amp together with your hp.

  5. This one ah? It was for demo purposes, just wanna know how the final stuff will look like. Its made of normal tonearm wire, 0.7mm in diameter including the Teflon insulation. Silver plated copper. The wire itself may be cheap... But i got to say i was pretty surprised by its sound. Now A-Bing my SXC, mundorf and this one to try to check out the difference.

I am taking the opportunity to try out more variations before school starts to get busy, thats why this few days got time go mess with LODs already.

Some more no one wanna post their own LODs. Very sad, so i post my own ones loh.

  6. The SXC sounds good to me, but I personally prefer mundorf wires' sound. Dont ask me to explain why though, its a feeling i couldnt put into words, just like when i met my first gf 6 years ago... Haha, lame.

I dunno why, but the RF interference decreased quite a lot recently when i am on the train. I bring my D3 out every day to school. Actually i am quite puzzled. Theoretically, as long as the electronic device is covered by a conductive material, there should be shielding already. The D3 covered in a thick conductive material...

Duck-in-the-box, my normal advice would be to read my blog. But i just deleted huge chunks of data, so, its not very informative now. Pm me if you got questions. I have recommendation on what you should avoid though. The silver bendy, the workmanship is simply horrible.

#BTW, that short LOD i posted just now, its because there were SXC wires left, but too short to make a full LOD... Didnt want to waste it, so haha, thats why. It's ugly though.

*Edit: Anyone knows how much Stereo charges for the Neutrik right angle? And does LHS carries them?

  7. Duck in the box, i am compiling one. But in my excitement i actually forgot to take photos of the braiding process and dock connector soldering process. Now overseas, so cant work on it too. Got to rush it when i am back in Singapore in Jan if not i will ganna from heady again, lol.

In the mean time you can search in Jaben forums and headfi, quite a lot of guides, but none comprehensive enough for my liking. But the materials there are enough for you to try to make one yourself.
