  2. @Ernest

Waah! Can I request a retake of a Pic? I would love to have a PS1 or a a HD800 on my head. Lol! :bash:

    @Cal

Anway, PC to my distributor should accomodate a UK plug. ;)

    :sign0006:

Waah! Thinking of selling my HD800 and HF2 for something I am dreaming of the longest time.

Might need to update my equipment list later.

  3. I will be attending

    Equipment List:

    - RSA Apache (revision C)

    - HD800 (hoping to be balanced by then)

    - HF2 (still thinking to balance Lol!)

NOTE: Please indicate if you are bringing Power Distributors (please indicate US or UK plug). Those with same equipment can also bring CDPs and Laptops as these might be few on the day itself. ;)

My Head Phone meet Name suggestion later.

  4. Yes it will be the last upgrade on the amp Lol! I sourced an umbilical cord for the Apache. It took a while to track connectors.

But it will not surely be the last upgrade on the Rig. Lol! Hope to try the CSE RK-100 hope it can accomodate my rig in terms of power (100 watts). Due to a three component setup (cdp, dac, amp). The two-sockets and the 100 watt limit are a head ache.

  5. Dear HD800 owners,

I am considering buying a pair of HD800 and if I do, I would like to have upgraded cables which are "balanced" terminated. May I know if upgrading the cables requires skillful installation or can I simply buy the cables from one of the sellers on Head-Fi, unplug the stock cable and plug in the new cable myself (like what one can do to the HD650)?

    Thank you

Yes you can buy an after market HD800 cable from thrid party resellers like those on head-fi. The connections to te HD800 can be removed easily. =)

Btw, stereo might bring in APS cables. So you can wait nd actually try it out there. =)

  6. @Kachui

Nice Rig! Waah I didn't even get a chance to hear your original rig. Haha! I'm quite interested to know how it sounds if time permits.

Just an update after 50 +/- hours of burn in my RS1 sounds brighter than my HD800 lol! I get a warmer presentation on my HD800.

The Apache extensions on highs and bass is showing already. I was WOWed this after noon listening to my Demo CD (you guys know what it is already).

But I have to admit it doesn't have that lush presentation on the mid range specially on vocals that one can get w/ tubes. But I really really love how my rig SLAMs!!! :lust:

  7. Still quite far away from the day..can't predict anything will happen on that day on not..

B22...will you solve HD800 bass not enough problem...Beyer T1 is coming..can HD800 survive through the battle??

MY tweaked apache sure does make it SLAM!

Btw, some business entities aer expresing interest. But take it as a grain of salt unless confirmed. :)

  8. I was able to audition the Audiotrak DR. DAC2 DX at Audio basic yesterday. It was fresh out of the box yesterday. I believe it should only have 3-4 hours of running time.

What amazed me is the opower of the little bugger. It's the width and length is smaller than a CD case the height should be two (2) standard CD cases stacked on top of each other.

On the "Low gain" 1/4 stereo jack (it has two ouput 1/4 stereo jacks one for Low and one for High), it drove the Ultrasone Pro 750 and the Pro 900 very well. it controlled the well known bass boom on the 750. It wasn't totally detailed but it was warm and very lush. The music was just engaging and very musical. I really liked it on the Ultrasones.

I then plugged in my AT ESW10. I found it had a very good synergy. The bass was controlled and the highs were just there.

Then someone pulled out the big guns a HD800. On the high gain. it was driven pretty decently. You know that the HD800 wasn't calling out for juice. The BASS was there and there was utterly no sibilance.

But even with the advantages above, I found that the DX had an upfront presentation. The sound stage wasn't as close to my SR71A. The highs were not that prominent either leaving you wanting for the "splash" on a cymbal. But again the unit was only running a few hours maybe on my return it may give me another surprise.

Please take the above impression with a "Grain of Salt", considering the burn in time and that the system was hooked up with a very (2x) decent CD player a Trigon.

But the DX is something you have to audition if you plan to have MINI-rig for bedside or even work. It has a built in DAC w/ a USB and an Optical input too. The biggest amazement is the price. Ask Steven at Audio basic and you'll surely be surprised.

Note: I have no affiliation with Audio Basic. It's just recently I have more time going around with the guys considering my rig is still being burned-in and I cannot enjoy my rig for the moment.

  9. @mangosteens

I really have no idea to DIY. My limiting factor is that i really (x10) su*k in soldering.

If you plan to do a big DIY project, it would be safer to go with a tried and tested platform. Meaning a well reviewed circuit layout and implementation. One thing painful in this hobby is the sum of the parts won't usually give you the best equipment.

You can try a B22 which for the longest time has been tried and well reviewed. On Tube amps I really haven't read much on a very well reviewed implementation.

Also on a DIY project you can't really cut corners by cutting back on parts. It will always give you a lot of "what if's" and may end up spending more by making a better and bigger one (true with the case of new B22 builders).

One things for sure it would be really hard to stick with a fixed budget if your going all the way. Lol!

  10. Actually there is also some idea of renting a space like an Airconditioned community center or if some one heavily sponsors a Hotel Conference/Meeting room.

Basically, it might look like a mini-meet "ala" Head-fi.

But these are all ideas. We encourage everyone to chime in. :helpsmilie:

The only thing that is sure is if this goes thru it would be a registered event with a maximum number of members only.

*Personal Note: Wish someone would go with a Zana Deux and a Single Power amp (certified and checked). Lol!

  11. James also did some mods on my DacMagic a few months back. And there is a significant improvement. But it does have a significant amount of cost too. =)

Some pics of my Modded DacMagic.

*Note: none of us have any affiliation with James of Effective Audio. It's just the work he's been doing is very good component and quality wise. I'm just a happy customer.

  12. It look too ugly to get poison leh. :rclxub: I don't think it worth it's price. Maybe I'm bias.

Nice jojo! So now everything has arrived and in place.

I thought is Eric. False alarm.

Haha! True! only prob of getting evrything at the same time is the time needed to burn in everything. :rclxub: I think i won't get to my Audio nirvana until next month.

    Items on burn in:

    -Headphones

    -amp

    -XLR Interconnects

    -Power cable

Nah! Eric still deciding what PC...ehem AMP to get.

  13. No anyone I know, is it?

Nah! He hasn't been posting in SGHeadphones for quite some time now and is more active at Jabem before. now he is being poisoned by Head-fi. Lol!

He also got the Audio GD Power cords. he didn't even know I had my Apache already if not for his visit last night. ;)

    @Fuzzy Fuzzbucket

Thanks for the note & Welcome back.

  14. Finally yours arrive. I'm quite surprise that since both ours ship on the same day, FedEx seems to be much slower.

Failed delivery last monday. They delivered 6:30 PM at my office. :bash: Btw, I used USPS Express mail which was quite alright except for the late delivery on a working day.

I actualy took half-day off last Monday. As I set-up my Apache at home. Lol! =)

Btw, I got a visit last night from someone who received a Audio GD Pheonix. lol! Can't wait to try it out after burn in.

  15. Oops... I thought I saw €660  Must be my eyes playing trick on me. We need ed8, ps1000, hd800 and t1 showdown :yeah::party:

I not sure about akg as they just release K702 not long ago as their flagship.

The only prob is the amp the HD800 is a b*tch to drive  Just imagine the T1 :bash: Lol! Now it really comes down to amp and headphone pairing not only on headphones alone.

AKG releasing a new headphone moving away from the K70x series. =)

  16. few years back they were selling this brand EKO on the streets. i got those EKO floorstanders from secondhand vendor for like 60. those were new but the build was kinda awful like shortage of glue. i had to apply loads of glue from the inside, line damper sponge in the cabinet, redesign the crossovers and some other i cant recall what.

the Orix one are build far better. no prob with them so far. soon maybe appearing at secondhand shops.

just took my grado out from its box. been sleeping for months. the donuts laohong already and shredding.... <_<

Sad to think that there are still persons running the white van stuff.

For the donuts, a visit to Stereo or Jaben you should have new donuts on those Grados soon.

  17. Thanks for the thumbs-up guys. I think you all know how long I really wanted to get an Apache. ^_^

    Looking good Jojo. :))

Pity your fiance right now, bet you didnt even notice that she's around anymore :P

Or are you now engaged to little miss american indian?

So, how does it sound out of the box? With the RS1?

Maybe now not the right time since you'll probably heard nothing but sweetness with your new toy.

Let us know once you settled in.

Not exactly I think, should have lots of cable changing and switching in the near future since the new ones have not be tested for compatibility on his apache. should have a few more rounds of powercord and IC swaps :grin::grin: Further, he hasn't even tapped into the balanced cable route, not to mention ALL the 3rd party alternatives that's available now. Suddenly got so many cable builders offering replacements on Headfi. :shocking:

Waah! Jig a mind reader. i found a bug in my power chords. I lost some dynamics and the BASS was VERY loose. Blame it on someone hands too itchy to change to a more expensive PC.

Just finished operation back to Audio Agile from Z1. Now everything back to normal.

Initial impressions wasn't good. due to the loose bass and it was just too black that I lost mids making dynamics suffer a LOT. After the switch I smiled again. The speed is what you would expect on RSA even on portables. The SLAM is just intoxicating. Tried PS1 a while ago and my jaw just dropped. If I can say the Apache and PS1 is something to die for. The Apache just controls that BASS and hits you back with a Big Ummpphh.. Now if the PS1 was mine.

On the HD800. The blackness just amazes me. You can now pin point the 2nd voice and even finger snaps from the instruments be it cymbals.

The HD800 is opening up a bit. but still not there yet. using medium gain now at 10 o'clock. Might try high gain tomorrow.

Will try RS1 later. Can't remove HD800 for a while.

Using cardas golden Cross until tomorrow then might switch to my Nordost frey to see the difference.

On a side note. My Fiancee likes the New rig. the reason i couldn't post earlier. She hogged the PC with my HD800. had to watch TV for a while. :bash: My fiancee has her own macbook she just wanted to listen to Lady Gaga.

  18. Congrats, Jojo! :DD

    Thanks Man!

    Apache!! Nice move jojo!

    Pics and impressions soon!

Pics now... impressions maybe after a week or two. Headphone, amp and even the cables aren't burned in.

We need pics of Apache and not the box :P

    Your wish is granted...

Special thanks to Wabbit for loaning me the RS1 and MS1000 with the LC3 during the time i sold my yama ;)

  19. Hmm...not sure, can't commend on that since I have not tried the Earmax SE before. But read somewhere in head-fi that with the HD650, the Earmax SE's volume knob has to be turned up to around 1 o'clock; I know this may not be a good gauge of how well an amp can drive a particular headphone, but when you need to crank the volume knob over 12 o'clock to get a decent volume, that says something about its power.

But than, I have read other posts that stated the Earmax SE should be adequate. Anyway, best to audition it first, if it is possible.

Amp and headphone matching without audition, is always risky when there are not a lot write-ups on a particular pairing that you are interested in.

Just to chime in. After hearing out the HD800. I personaly found that amps that were great with the HD650 were not always that great with the HD800. I'd go with Kachui's recommendation to try out a HD800 with your rig. =)
