After some backbreaking moving of furniture and OCD-like rearrangement of speaker positioning, I now finally have decent imaging and soundstage. Now to tackle that problem with the bottom end bass....

Honestly, I have no clue. What is your other source? I was just thinking that the av switcher is the most economical option, as opposed to actually buying another amp! If your other source is also a cdp then maybe its best to just sell one of them.

You must live in some RFI/EMI hell area like me. I hear the wheeee wheeeee when I used unshielded headphone extension cables.....and my old amp was even able to pick up some unknown radio station!

Well, you could use one of those av switchers with multiple rca inputs. Then no need to buy another amp liao, just 2 more pairs of cheap interconnects.

Hmm..but then again, some used integrated amps are very very cheap these days.

Either way should work I guess.

I think you guys might want to open up your amps just to check that there are no deformed or leaking electrolytic caps. Just as a safety precaution. Burning smell does not sound normal.

Headphones are a compromise, thats for sure. Lack of space for a speaker setup, not being able be blast your speakers because of other family members, kids or neighbours etc are some of the reasons why people turn to headphones. I'd rather listen to speakers if I could!

I tend to disagree. Headphones are not a compromise in that it offers a good way to get a high end sound on a budget. $ for $ headphones systems can offer great value. There are drawback since most CDs/records etc are recorded in standard stereo. As such headphones suffer from the in your head feeling however crossfeed helps a little. The real problem of a headphone based system is the lack of binaural recordings of many genre of music and artists.

 

Like you I prefer speakers because I can walk around drink coffee (or some other poison) and still enjoy music.

As I mentioned earlier, in the end the comfort factor and the ergonomics, as well as the possible increased risk for hearing damage all contributed to my decision to dump headphones and move on to speakers, even though because of my cramped environment, my speaker placement will always be less than obtimal, resulting in off-center imaging. Thankfully I have no bass boom problem in my room.

Headphone amplifier business is difficult in Singapore..... but will consider.

I'd say the market for them in Singapore is almost non-existent. You can try putting up a poll aasking people how much their willing to spend on a decent amplifier for their headphones and I bet you most of the responses will be in the 50 to 100 dollar range. Compare and contrast head-fi and this forum and you'll see the huge difference between our market and theirs. Unless you can find something really decent for less than $100, don't bother.

Etymotics are excellent for commuting.

So do Shure E5c which I preferred to Etys in MRT.

You can still hear the bass note but not the Etys, it seem like it had been cancel off by the rumble of the train moving.

AV98's has a very unique house/apartment. It's an RFI nightmare lol frankly.
