wonder if linux drivers are hard to install, i.e. do I need to know how to type various commands, like in DOS

    actually was researching on this

Govt set to review tax policy for diesel vehicles

    By Christopher Tan

AFTER resisting the idea for more than 30 years, the Government is revisiting the policy on diesel passenger vehicles, which have been growing in popularity the world over because of their cleanliness, economy and power.

But drivers wanting the latest sporty turbo-diesel vehicle may have to wait up to a year for details of new rules.

Currently, owners of diesel cars pay an annual road tax that is seven times that of equivalent petrol vehicles under a rule introduced in 1971, when diesel cars were sooty and noisy.

Despite the leaps in advancement diesel engines have made, a car like the Mercedes-Benz E220CDI carries a road tax of $12,404 a year here, versus $1,772 if it were petrol-driven.

As a result, out of more than 405,000 passenger cars in Singapore, fewer than 20 are diesel models, Land Transport Authority data shows.

The Straits Times understands that studies on the impact on tax revenue loss have already been undertaken. Diesel, unlike petrol, is duty-free.

If people switch, the state stands to forgo some of the $390 million it collects a year in petrol duty, second only to what it collects in tobacco tariffs.

Hence, the Finance Ministry is involved in the review, which is spearheaded by the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources (MEWR) and its statutory board, the National Environment Agency.

When asked for details, an MEWR spokesman would say only that the 'Ministry of Finance and the MEWR will look into the annual tax on diesel vehicles as part of its regular policy review'.

Representatives of European carmakers like Mercedes-Benz and BMW, which have a strong diesel line-up, have been lobbying for the diesel cause for years, sources say. Over the last few years, these manufacturers have introduced diesel models to predominantly petrol-driven markets in the Asia-Pacific.

A spokesman for DaimlerChrysler South-east Asia, Ms Katherine Goh, said the response has been positive. 'The Mercedes E220CDI was introduced in Thailand three years ago and it has become one of the most successful models in the E-class segment,' she said. 'It makes up more than 30 per cent of E-class sales there.'

Advocates reckon modern diesel vehicles will have an insignificant impact on air quality, and say assertions that diesel exhaust is more harmful than petrol are unwarranted.

'If you're talking about fine particulates, which the anti-diesel party keeps harping on, just look at the haze and other major causes,' one said.

The topic is not unique to Singapore. In Britain, for instance, the authorities have not yet been able to come out with policies regarding particulates because of inconclusive findings. The German government, on the other hand, found after an extensive study that diesel emissions had 10 times the cancer-causing potential of petrol exhaust.

However, it also discovered that if diesel vehicles were fitted with particulate filters - which modern models have - their exhaust becomes no more carcinogenic than petrol emissions. Diesel emissions, too, contain much less greenhouse gases, a main contributor to global warming. Today, nearly half of all new cars sold in Europe are diesel versions.

In Singapore, Motor Traders Association vice-president Michael Wong described the current diesel tax regime as ridiculously prohibitive. 'The diesel surcharge does nothing to control car population,' he added. 'For that, we already have the COE system, which is an absolute control. And from an environmental standpoint, the newer diesels are clean.'

Businessman and car enthusiast Koo Wee Leng, 33, argues that environmental concerns can be easily addressed with more stringent exhaust standards. 'In Europe, the emission standards are much higher, and the diesel vehicles there have exhaust traps to remove particulates,' he observed.

The MEWR spokesman, though, defended the current 33-year-old policy, saying: 'While Euro 4 standards will improve the emissions of diesel vehicles, these still emit higher particulate matter and other pollutants than petrol vehicles.'

actually this sector is quite lucrative if some manufacturer can come up with a half-decent closed round the back headphones, perfect for those who don't want the "headband hair" look

  4. Well the thread title did say new toys! Hehehe. When my son saw it he just took the box. That look on his face was unmistakable, a true red blooded Ferrari fan at heart! Cute!

Here's a closeup shot of the "Test driver". It's not schumacher or Barichiello because those came as a seperate set #8389 which was not available at the shop. Darned LEGO corporation!

time to dig out my lego box & built me one of these [a clone at least]

looks mostly standard lego parts except for the rear of the sidepods & the top air intake....

  5. When it's good it's very impressive indeed, for something as tiny as a cigarette lighter.

    agreed

btw, my results with experiments with a cheapo mini-to-mini cable for line-in recording to my njb3 instead of the fm recording on the remote have been mixed

think i need a better cable, and better reception too

when reception is good, plus radio stations don't use compressed music, the musical range is great

  7. i tot his budget is ard $150

shure e2c if u don't mind in ear, good isolation, bass not as good as v6, but low profile [plus no headband depression on your hair after taking off fones]

got to stretch budget to S$170plus though

actually v6 is around that price, if u can find them, tried v6 b4 during meet [thanx q00], the bass is addictive

cord is coiled like home phone cable though, not sure if that will bother u

another contender is senn hd280, near your price range [convert from us pricing] but not sure about pricing here, hung bros again?

dt231, tried briefly, cups don't surround my ears, although velour is nice, hung bros listening station playing classical music so can't really test out

  9. imo, af & shutter lag is one of the main differences between dslr & high end prosumer dslr-like cameras

    others are

    low noise @ high iso

    ttl optical viewfinder

    prosumer fights back with

    live histogram

hi power zoom in small form factor

but just saw on dpreview that oly 8080 had full lag [af & shutter] of 0.2/0.3 sec, sounds pretty good

that's much faster than my canon a70 [up to 1 sec at times]

dslr lag timings not shown on website cos its dependent on lens used

wonder how much is the difference? btwn dslr & high end prosumer?

tried out s2 pro b4, lag was very short

not much problems of missing a shot, which is the main problem of my consumer cam

on another note, sigma just announced a 18-50mm f2.8 lens, this builds on the 18-125mm lens now just reaching the hands of photographers

    http://www.sigma-photo.co.jp/english/news/18_50f28_exdc.html

    http://www.sigma-photo.co.jp/english/lens/...25f35_56dc.html

18-125mm means 28-200mm [35mm equivalent] for 1.5x factor, nice walkabout lens for everything, if u don't mind the slower [in terms of light] lens

  10. creative always does this, lowering prices suddenly for a short period

    http://www.creativex.creative.com/products...idProduct=10309

$398 for 4GB, plus free remote [the new white colour version]....driverless usb transfers

so tempting, especially when i'm having some problems with transferring files to my njb3...

as far as i know, this offer is online only, need to have visa card

  11. sennheisers have 2 year warranty

    email add: service.asia@sennasia.com.sg

another point to note, e2c comes with

three pairs (small, medium, large) of disposable foam sleeves and

three pairs (small, medium, large) of flex sleeves

    for different size ears

foam sleeves should be more comfortable, but each can be used for only a few times b4 they get dirty, but flex sleeves should be faster to insert, plus reusable, theoretically forever

e3c comes with additional ultra-soft flex sleeves on top of the 2 types mentioned

also e2c needs filters, these are actually small round mesh-like stickers u stick over the e2c b4 putting on the sleeves

they prevent earwax from falling into the e2c, and will need to be replaced at intervals that vary, original package comes with 5 pairs of them

fit is paramount, how deep, what angle they are inserted will affect the sound, a bit similar to px200, i find them not enclosing my ears, so sometimes they move around, i know they are not designed for that, just tot that would lead to better isolation

after some time, u should be able to take off one side to answer a handphone call & put it back in quick succession, set ur handphone to vibrate, keep note of where u are going, ezlink beeps, mrt door closing beeps, next mrt station announcements, all these will not be heard clearly

u will find urself listening to @ same sound level w/o pushing the vol of ur source that high [10 compared to 16 on my njb3]

e2c has only one way of wearing, the cable loops around the ear, but u can have the cable run down the front, which is more practical during commuting, e3c allows u to wear it around the ear or like normal earbuds

as to stares on mrt / bus, i didn't get any, or rather, i was so isolated from the outside world that i just close my eyes and enjoy my trance / rock music...smile.gif

    best to test first

  12. remember to include the er6 in your considerations too

did not like the e3 when i tested them in during the last sgheadphones meet, but may be due to poor fit

e2 is muddy compared to sr60, lacks a bit in the highs & lows, but good for portable use

depends on your source & quality of music files too

    e3c would be about S$300...
