to me, headfi is just a stepping stone towards proper speakers. speakers are $$$ while headfi is so much more bang for the buck.

try an AT A900. Less than 300 and definitely more engaging than etys.

got it at Heeren HMV for $18.95. It's on the 2nd floor near the wall of top charts, on the desk facing the glass door. Its a christmas special so it might not last too long.

Just to let you know that AKG 501 is a bass deficient headphones. No matter what you do, it will still be anemic compared to other cans. If you want bass to appear magically, it is not going to happen. Find a headphone that you like best tonally before getting an amp. If you really like the 501 and do not care too much about bass, then by all means get an amp based on the above recommendations.

I wonder if some of you guys are copying cds in the best way. I doubt Nero or even other software can do the ripping as well as EAC. There are 2 steps to copying a cd. First, you have to rip. Second, burning. As far as copying is concerned, I think ripping is far more crucial than burning.

Use EAC to do the ripping. Then u can use any programs like Nero or even EAC to burn the wav files created. It might be harder to configure than the other programs but you only need to configure it once. Just make sure you rip Secure with NO C2, accurate stream, disable cache. Then copy it either by Copy Image and create cuesheet or just copy.

As for different presses, it is highly possible that mastering is different. ie European vs American vs Japanese. As far as I know, XRCDs are all remastered, mostly brighter than other versions.

Honestly, if nothing seems wrong, then it should be alright. If you are really paranoid, there is no need to reformat. Under Accessories, System Tools, System Restore, you can restore your system to an earlier date. Followup with installation of drivers.

Try looking in Cash Convertors for old discmans. You might be pleasantly surprised. Do check out headfi for some reviews particularly Duncan's giant review of portables. I think Duncan posted the same thing here too but headfi one is more updated.

the koss ksc 35 can only be bought from koss website and the original grado flat pads can only be bought from TTVJ.

I realise some cdplayers do not like certain CDR dyes and that may be due to interaction between the laser and the disc (plastic surface, reflection layer) itself. Maybe standards for pressing cds are not as exacting as it should be.

I have discs that work only on conventional cdp not on computer cdroms and vice versa. Cdps that only accept certain media burned above a certain speed. Cdrs that don't work in philips transports. Rotel 991 also philips right? Newer and cheaper players also have improvements in reading CDRWs which have very low reflectivity so other aluminium disc might be no kick for them.

Just some of my views.

Don't worry, I have some original aluminium discs that work on a player but doesn't read at all in another. A perfect looking surface doesn't mean it is perfect. I suggest you do a swap for another set. Or you can burn a copy.
