  3. Lately I've been listening to Rossini's Overtures. Two versions on LP are by Reiner with the ChicagoSO and the other is by Riccardo Chailly with the National PO.

The Reiner version is the reference, very good performances which captures the electricity of the music, particularly the famous William Tell piece. The Riccardo version on London is very well recorded, and it too has its charms. There's a bit of playfulness in the 2nd movement which is done very well.

  4. Hi, CMK

can we organize to watch this program over your's place ? for our small group of friends having the common interest here ?

    Hi Lao Mao

Sorry for the late reply, as I only pop in occassionally. Watching the DVD at my place is of course fine. When would you like to do this and how many are you expecting?

I think you'll be happy with the DT880 - they are more neutral and detailed than the 595.

However, for long term listenability and enjoyment, the 880 may seem boring, depending on the choice of headphone amp used.

Do listen to the DT990 as well. I still use and enjoy them although they were my first cans and I was completely new to this. Note that the 990 is one step down from the 880. Details are there but the 880 has the edge in detail retrieval. The 990 will sound a bit more bass heavy but not as dark sounding as the 600/650.

BTW, each headphone can present an entirely different sonic signature even if they are from the same line, so don't assume they sound the same. The best is to listen with your own setup.

Any of these headphones will sound best if driven by an appropriate amp. Exception being the Grado 325 which has a low impedence.

Another option is the Audio Technica range. I have the W100 which I love, but is already discontinued.

    Good luck with your search.

    RODRIGO:-

    Side 1. "Concierto de Aranjuez"

    Featuring Siegfried BEHREND (guitar).

With the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Conductor:- Reinhard PETERS.

Side 2. "Concerto Serenade for Harp and Orchestra"

    Featuring Nicanor ZABALETA (harp).

With the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Berlin. Conductor:- Ernst MARZENDORFER

Spanish music of Rodrigo. Heard this many times on the radio, but only recently picked up a nice version of this music. The Concierto de Aranjuez is particularly good.

  7. i own the PX200, it doesn't keep the beep beep away.. my panasonic and sony does.. party.gif

hi nakedtoes, I am more to the px200 now (yeah...finally). smile.gif But just like to know what is the perfect seal? Saw in other forums that the entire cans must be on the ears or smtg like that? I tried px200 (burn in one) and a brand new px100. Find that the former has more bass than px100 but muddier? Am I getting the right seal?

Don't listen to everything you read at these forums. What's more important is that it sounds good to you. There is no such thing as a perfect seal - the ear is not flat, neither is the PX200 designed to enclose the sound in the ear 100%. As long as it cuts off most of the extraneous noise and you can hear the music well, that's your seal.

I've tried the PX100 too and didn't like it. The PX200 is much better. As to the muddy bass, if your source has a loudness control or a bass boost, switch it off. Those are just artificial distortions. The PX200 has just about the right amount of bass, but limited treble extension compared to other more costly cans. IMO the PX200 is the best buy at that price point.

  8. Hi

Since you are a classical fan, then you should consider AKG 501.  I was a sceptic at first, but after having heard it, it does a fantastic job on classical.  Not recommended for pop though.

Also since you prefer faster sound, another possibility is the Grado 325, which you can audition at MBD.

Either of these 2 cans would IMO be more suitable than either the HD650 or the DT880.

The AKG 501's are a little bass shy. If he finds that the DT931 is bass shy out of whichever amp he used, I doubt he'd find more bass in the K501's.

The Grado SR325's are painfully bright. Not exactly what you'd use for his prefered genre of music. OTOH, the RS-1's and HP-1's lean much closer to neutrality and I'd recommend them. A good compromise is actually the SR-225's. They're only slightly bright but have the pace and speed.

Though the 501s maybe bass shy, their timbre accuracy on strings is quite extraordinary. On chamber pieces, its very good. I still stand by this recommendation.

While you may find the 325 bright, I think its a matter of personal taste and matching electronics. In an appropriately matched system, its not bright at all. In any case, if you consider the 225 slightly bright, then we agree on this point already.

Best for him to audition these cans for himself.

  9. Hello,

I used to own a Marantz CD-7 source paired up with a heavily modded Sugden headmaster driving a pair of HD600 with the cardas smurf cable.

I felt I wanted more resolution and dynamics with my music thus I recently sold off the headmaster amp.

I generally listen to orchestral music and operas.

I'm keeping the source but I am considering changing the cans. I'm thinking of the new Grace 902 for amplification.

For the phones, I have narrowed my choices down to the HD650 or the DT880. What do you recommend?

    My findings so far:

    DT880

    -extremely high resolution

-great dynamics, speed and pace ( This is important to me. I enjoy listening to a great orchestra(e.g berlin philharmonic+karajan) blaze through a fast and furious modern piece. Also with this quality I can truely appreciate the nuances of the playing of great musicians. Ability to compare the playing of various great musicians and orchestras.)

-ability to hear bass lines(something I value alot. With the old HD600s I generally can't really hear what the double basses and cellos are playing in loud complex orchestral pieces. Tho the fault could lie in the sugden.)

    HD650

So far what I read of this phone is that it is basically a souped up 600?

I generally dislike overly smooth and syrupy systems. before I moved over to headphones, I preferred SS over tubes in general.

Therefore any suggestions? I read of much comparisons between the DT880 and HD600. Seems like the DT880 suits my tastes better. However how does it compare with the HD650?

While searching the forum, I stumbled across this post by a poster named Mackie:

"FWIW, I dumped HD600 for DT880 and now, I'm completely bowled over by HD650. I can't imagine how glorious the cans will sound after a cable upgrade to Zu Mobious, Cardas, Equinox etc. "

So the HD650 triumphs over the DT880 in all aspects? Please advise and discuss.

    Thanks and cheers

  10. Marriner and ASMF is certainly my no. 1 choice for Mozart's music. Back to Baroque, I also favour Trevor Pinnock and the English Concert on authentic period instruments, Chris Hogwood and Academy of Ancient Music and last but not least, Música Antiqua Kohln.

Don't forget Raymond Leppard with the English Chamber Orchestra.

  11. New toys are spks, and some other tweaks to the supports.

I got the Canare cable from Mackie so that I can watch movies on the big screen at night w/o disturbing my kids.

    That's about it.

I suppose when you reach a certain point, you just got to pick up more software and enjoy the music.

Recently its classical LPs, unfortunately they are scarse in SG, more abundant supply overseas.

  12. i just browsed through the SGH member list and this is what i found on the posting count:-

    1. There are now 1112 members.

    2. There are 630 members who do not post at all.

    3. There are 285 members who have posted 1 up to 9 posts.

    4. There are 74 members who have posted 10 up to 20 posts.

    5. There are 40 members who have posted 21 up to 50 posts.

    6. There are 18 members who have posted 51 up to 100 posts.

7 There are 31 members who have posted between 101 up to 200 posts.

8 There are 34 member who have posted more than 200 posts.

From the above statistic, we all can see that only about 17% (197) member who are active by the count of post of 10 and above posts. This is rather low participitation, i would say.

I had come across some other thread expressing simillar concern about member participation and some action being mentioned.

My question is, what is the issue on why such a low member participitation and what can be done about it?

p.s: i have noted that there is a member goes by the name arjn. please do not be mistaken by the name simillarity.

At least I'm in the top 3.06%! biggrin.gifholiday.gifparty.gifjump.gif
