  1. My last purchases for 2003 :

Senn PX200 $190 from Hung Bros

iRiver SlimX IMP400 $235 from Dynasty 2nd floor SLS

IMO : this portable combination offers amazingly good sound quality, good detail/separation with very nice mids, plus the bass goes low with good definition. Definitely not bright. It also offers very simple personalised EQ, which works well enough. I only boosted the bass a little. On the whole a very balanced sounding combination. Highly recommended.

  2. Any preference for open or closed cans?

Open let's you hear what's going on around you, also others can hear what you're listening to, albeit softly.

Closed you have more privacy, but then if a fire breaks out and you can't hear alarm sad2.gif

ermz, maybe open type? Any sound quality differents?

    Open cans headphone.gif

    Closed cans beyer.gifgrado.gifsony.gifeggo.gifetys.gif

Sound quality really varies. There are good closed and open cans. You really have to listen to each together with the appropriate amplification to determine which you prefer.

Note that headamps can change the sound dramatically, from ppth.gifmellow.gifbiggrin.gifparty.gif

One possibility is a complete Grado setup, GR60 plus the Grado amp. Even one of the portable amps will work fine - Cmoy, headsave, mint meta, etc... You really have to listen to the actual setup, so attending the meet would help you get there really quick. grouphug.gif

Grados leak a LOT, they really do. Koss KSC-35 leaks a fair share too, so don't be surprised if your "neighbour" stares at you as if you are hearing impaired. Just smile. happy.gif

I'll be too busy enjoying to bother headphone.gifparty.gifkicking.gif

  4. Hi Guys

I'm new to this, so I'd like to find out more about the arrangements before I lug down my stuff. Like

    1) is there any dedicated power lines with US sockets, or do I have to BYO?

    2) with all the equipment lying around, how's the security? Do we have to label our stuff?

This way I can determine how much to bring.

    Thanks

  5. You can drop by Hung Bros, 3rd floor SLS and try out the HD600, HD650 and the DT880 as these would be in your price range. However, the budget of $600-800, after spending on the cans, you won't have much left for a good amp, unless you are ok with one of the portable ones?

  6. CMK tried it today with his PX200, maybe he can giv a first impression on the amp, he's also the first person other then myself to hav heard the amp smile.gif

Both the Cmoy and its other brother can sure kicking.gif .

Lots of gain - which is a party.gif thing.

Will post more impressions once I've got my source sorted out.

  7. Did try out the Grado GR60 at Music By Design. On their CEC setup, it definitely sounds good, though I did detect a hint of brightness. If you guys want to audition the Grados, I'd suggest you bring your own source along for a more realistic audition. I don't have a portable source yet.

Went straight to Hung Bros and listened to the ER6, PX200 and the KSC55. I tot the ER6 was bass light and therefore did not suit my taste. The KSC55 was a bit better, but the highs were more prominent. The PX200 had the most bass of the lot, though the highs were nothing to shout about. Mids were nice with decent separation. I felt that the PX200 had the best mix of portability and musicality, so I got a set.

Immediately went up a floor to try the Cmoy Var, again I still didn't have a source, but from the brief audition through his MP3 player, there was plenty of gain. Sounded dynamic, punchy and had good drive. As I wasn't familar with the music, I couldn't form a conclusive opinion. Certainly worth another audition.

Dropped by av98m's house, who happens to be my neighbour! Talk about small world. We, wishlist, av98 and myself, had a swell of a time. It was a mini meet with lots of gear all around. Wishlist will provide further updates once he gets to his pc.

  8. Thanks AugustineRS, I don't listen to heavy metal, so I guess it should be fine. Do you use your PX200 amplified, or straight out of the hp jacks?

av98m, I guess I will have to listen to the Grados at least, before jumping into this. Are you still ok this afternoon for me to listen to your headsave?

  9. Heee! I finally got myself a pair of Grados SR-80.

Actually decided on the px200, but after I heard the Grados, I jus couldn't resist it. Oh well.

    Hi seanie

What made you change your mind about the PX200 to get the grados?

I just heard the PX200 and thought it was actually pretty good for the price.

  10. hpcrazy

which other clip ons have you tried? Sony?

If I were looking for one with decent sound reproduction, which can be driven direct from a PCDP, which would you recommend on a budget of <$100?

    TIA

Another Q? : which offers better sound reproduction in general - clip-ons or in-ear phones?

  11. I would like to thank Mackie for his excellent advice, first for looking at the Beyers, and secondly, for help in looking for headamps.

As I have no basis for comparison with other amps, I'd just say that once the Melos is warmed up, it sounds excellent with the DT990, liquid highs, great punch/dynamics, and well balanced full range sound. party.gif

Have u check what 88 tubes are in the amp?

The previous owner had Electro Harmonix ECC88s in them. I thought I'd give it a listen before doing anything. My initial impression is that it sounds good, so I might not want to tube roll. HeadFi users recommended the Tungsol and Mullard, and another tube I'm not familar with - 6H23.

Do you have any recommendations? rolleyes.gif
