  1. If not tube amp, then why does the Orpheus use tubes? Also the Stax 007t.

My Diva tube amp will finally be ready this afternoon. I'll see if it matches the MS Pros. I experienced hiss not with the MS Pro, but the 250ohm Beyer DT990, so I disagree with your assessment that solid state amps will be a better match for low impedence cans.

  2. I've gone through quite a few headphone experiences and sad to say, I wasn't blown by the GS-1000's or L3000's or the K1000's and Stax 4040 system at kingsley. I've yet to hear the HE90's or the Omega 2's but I've got to say, many times, headphone experiences are either overly exaggerated or is it just me? I don't find that the L3000 blows the ES7 away nor do the GS-1000's sound so much better than the HD650's...So what I'am trying to say is that, i wouldn't be suprised to hear that people might even prefer the omega 2 over the HE90 or maybe GS-1000's over the HE90s....But still, I'll love to hear the HE90's and see what all that hype is about...

Just wanted to check if you had upgraded your source since the last time you were looking for a better one?

IMO with the kinds of headphones you are using, it is hard to believe that not a single one "blew you away". :bash:

Not trying to start a fight or anything, just that with your kind of budget, if not a single headphone is good enough, then you are probably looking for something other than headphones (speakers?) or there must be something wrong with the source equipment (most likely).

  3. so its made of titanium? 8kg is light!!!

Actually its about 8.9kg, more like 9kg. Just wanted to experiment and see how light I could go with a hardtail.

hey! dun look down on urata.

    urata is gd cheap stuff.

hasa has quite a heavy body as well.

Actually weight is good for downhill. There are some nutcases, with really heavy bikes, but strictly downhill and they only ride full-sus.

  4. At the request of a friend, I had the previlige of listening to the Orpheus. Now I won't go into big details of how it sounds, cos' the "audition" was a short 30mins, but in a word - heavenly.

My previous experience with electrostatics were Stax, and this, Orpheus is the best electrostatic I've heard todate. Full of detail, smooth sounding, yet completely natural. It has loads of detail, even the slight nuances and harmonics of piano's tone were reproduced faithfully. Its very quiet despite being amplified by tubes, I did not notice any tube rush. And the amazing thing to me at least, was the dynamics of the panels. This baby rocks! There's bass a plenty too. Nothing is over-emphasized or out of place which would raise eye brows.

My only criticisms are: its just too smooth, there's not enough drama. The soundstage is a little closed in, although the individual instruments are still clearly separated.

Overall: Smooth, detailed, leaning to slightly warm, yet completely natural. These are the ultimate goals that I set out to achieve when building my hifi system, and they are attained in these hideously expensive and rare headphones. If money were no object, I would take these without even thinking.

  5. AMEN

But do remember Miles had several "periods" each with a different sound. Kinda Blue is a classic but may be over the top for the newbie.

    Since you're askin'...start with the Prestige Recordings of the Miles Davis Quintet;

    1) MILES

    2) COOKIN

    3) WORKIN

    4)STEMIN

    5) RELAXIN

They are five seperate LP but you should be able to get some kinda CD box set.

These are good suggestions from someone with experience.

  6. Managed to borrow back a set of silver ICs to put between the tonearm and phono. It was an eye opener. :DD

    Listened to:

Bach VC#2 and Con for 2 violins - Jaap Schroeder, Christopher Hirrons and Hogwood, Academy of Ancient Music. I was intoxicated, fantastic timber and scale.

Bob James & Earl Klugh - Two on Two. Another revelation, high swing factor.

This is about the pinnacle of tonearm technology - the linear tracker, because LP grooves are cut that way. The key to getting it to work is that the arm must be almost having negligible horizontal and vertical friction, so that the cart can trace the groove laterally and vertically, thus allowing the cart to perform its job without added resonances getting in the way. A simple and ingenious solution, this does not require high pressure pumps, rather a normal aquarium pump, and it works. While pump noise is always the bane of air-bearing tonearms, with a long tube, I located the pump just behind the door, thus removing the slight noise. Great stuff!
