Dilemma over portable source: DMP vs PCDP

After upgrading my phones and getting a headamp, I've no choice but almost forced to change my portable source. I am using an ancient Creative Muvo FM 5GB player. It does not have line out option and SQ is not desirable.

 

Not sure if this dilemma has been discussed extensively here. I wanted a better if not best source as portable media. I know PCDP offers best quality and generally relatively cheaper but it is not as portable. DMP is more convenient and offers great storage but is expensive and need to take care of encoding quality.

 

I am sure most has went through this. Perhaps can share how you arrive at your desired source?

I think they should co-exist. I use a pcdp/pa2v2/full size cans on the go and also a ipod shuffle with ear buds and iems. Depends on mood really. If I want some background music for stupor, the shuffle is it. If I really wanna venture into music nirvana, the pcdp system will be my pick.
