  1. Looks serious How about taking the DAC from the Creative M85-D digital monitor... you still can use them as an active speaker Then mod or change the headamp... I know it's a lot of work, but it should be fun
  2. I might try the big blue ALPS one day, who is Frankie (WAL)?
  3. Waiting for your comment of how it sounds
  4. Thanks jtfoo! Any other cheaper, smaller, and good pot beside the BLUE ALPS?
  5. Thanks Digi for sharing the info! For my first head amp, I would like to hear the difference from a moddest and simple head amp like Non inverting Op-amp. I guess it will be purely testing the Op-amp sound quality since the audio signal will only go through the pots, coupling cap, and the Op-amp itself. For these 3 components I try to get the best but affordable component. Op-amp I will try BB OPA2134 (Farnell SGD 4.9) Input Capacitor I will try Vishay Polypropylene 378 Series 1.0 uF. (Farnell SGD 2.8) Potentiometer, still looking. Blue ALPS seems to be too expensive and big in size. Do you have any suggestion ? Thanks! Bram
  6. Thanks for the tips! I've bought some OPA2134 from farnell as well as other components. I like this company Actually my company used to buy connectors from them, and I just forgot about Farnell when looking for elecronics components. Well this is not my first time DIY, but probably will be the first time after I'm graduated... And that is more than 7 years ago I saw (in catalogue) an ALPS pot (big one) especially for audio... wow, around SGD 47 per piece Any suggestion for a good pot for volume control ?
  7. Thanks JtFoo! I will visit Farnell when have time
  8. Hi friends, where to buy OPA2134 in Sim Lim Tower? Yesterday I asked Kaichin and Silicon Electronics, as well as some other shops, none of them have OPA2134. I planned to build one also Thanks! Bram
  9. Thanks for the info! I'm aware Panasonic makes great machines too Their PCDP ussually sounds good. Anyway when we talk about mid and high (not to fair to talk about bass for small system), it will all goes back to personal taste. Sometime a system that no so costly can sounds better to my ears than a system cost 3 times of it. To be objective, we need to compare it side by side with CDs that familiars to us. I'm impressed with the neutral sound of the mid and high of the EX-A1. When compare to the bi-amp Panasonic SC-PM148, maybe Panasonic will win in the overall big sound and bass, but might not have the neutral mid and high as the EX-A1. Anyway I will try the panasonic if I had the chance. I'm not buying the EX-A1, but my friends (2 persons) might. I will tell them to try the panasonic as well. But these days people also looking for the looks
  10. Today I had a chance to listen to A1 system. I brought my own CDs, and played around 3-4 songs. I'm not very sure whether there is any equalizer or tone control, I didn't have the time to learn about it, so I just listen without knowing if there was any tone control on or off. But seems that there was no equalizer on at that time. My first impression, very impressive micro system, the best that I ever heard. For SGD 750.- and the small size, it is very impressive The sound. Vocal sounds very neutral and open, excellent. The treble sounds bright, a little bit to bright for me, but never sounds too sharp and harsh. So I still can live with the treble. The bass is impressive for such a small speaker with one driver. Sufficient for easy listening, but for me I would add subwoofer, I like deep bass Compare to my Yamaha Piano Craft E100 (the old model with 60Watt x 2 Amp), the Yamaha is about the same price (until now with the new model E400) with the EX-A1, bigger in size, and also sounds bigger. But my E100 only plays CD, the EX-A1 plays almost everything. Mid and High, the Yamaha sounds bolder, but the EX-A1 slightly more neutral and brighter. With subwoofer, I would love to have the EX-A1. I will post an update when any of my friend bought EX-A1, and pair it with subwoofer. I think the Yamaha subwoofer YST-SW015, for price and size, is a good match with EX-A1 (I have the old YST-SW320). http://www.yamaha.co.jp/english/product/av/index.html
  11. If I remember correctly, the KOSS PLUG was SGD 38.-
  12. Thanks Jason! Hi Digi01, what amp is that? I would like to try the one using the Burr-Brown Op-Amp. Or do you guys have any experience with other op-amps? Any suggestions? Thanks!
  13. Aaarrrggghhhh... yea, you're right... I was about to order a pair... I just checked the Creative boot in Expo, they'are selling it at SGD 99.- so no different than Sim Lim. Too late...
  14. A very nice micro hifi from JVC. And the first in the world... Wood Cone Speaker !!! I wonder how it sounds Has anyone listened to it? Check this post for more detail on the wooden cone speaker: http://www5.head-fi.org/forums/showthread.php?t=72028 http://www.cdfreaks.com/news/9485
  15. Thanks for your 2cents I will check the ongoing PC show in expo, probably they are selling it at the same price as the online promo.
  16. Hi Augustine, could you please comment on the sound quality of the M85? I'm also interested. I have Altec Lansing 221, to me the bass is just to much, and doesn't sound good for vocal. But it is good for instrumental. How's M85 reproduce vocal, and is the bass sufficient? Thanks!
  17. Hi All, I want to try to DIM (Do It Myself) a headphone amp. Any recommendation which shop in SLT to get the components? Thanks!
  18. I saw from review, KOSS the PLUG sounds very good for the price. I saw it at Hung Brothers (SLS #3).
  19. Hi All headphone enthusiast, Yesterday I tested the Bose headphone. Well it is just a few minutes listening in their showroom (Plaza Singapura), so my opinion might not be objective. I brought my own audiophile recording CD (The Best of Celtic Voices) which I have listened a few times with my ATH-EW9. And my first impression: 1. Light weight for an active headphone with one AAA battery. Quite comfortable. 2. The noise canceling only works for low frequency, but not cancells voice frequency. I still can hear people talking if they are in close distance with me. It makes me feels like being in a plane. This feature cannot be disable. 3. The bass is very BIG!!! Good for bass lovers 4. Overall sound, well not for my taste (I like vocals, jazz, classics, etc.). The mid and high sounds average for the price (to my ears). Especially the treble sounds a bit harsh and sharp. Not suitable for listening to female vocal with high pitch The list price is SGD 695.- but during the Singapore Sale seasson, they are selling this headphone at SGD 599.-. I still prefer my ATH-EW9, to me it sounds better and more enjoyable
