  1. lol. i think the guy might have prolly been a part timer and knew nuts when you said the source sucked. hence the blank smile. hahaha.
  2. ok.. wat does the term point to point soldering mean.. issit u tediously etch ur lead onto e board so it looks kinda like --o--o--o--o--o? and if so, how u manage to link em up, and not get e lead blobbing up and covering e holes anyway? mine would just turn out as a whole blob linking 2 holes together. and not to mention covering em up as well... therefore defeating any purpose. haha. sheesh. argh i need an apprenticeship man. lol. any of u guys stayin around hougang? hehe
  3. wow. ok... how do u blow up opamps? haha. any tips so dat i dun get hit? (especially not wif e OPAs.. once i get my hands on em..) btw im sure someone around here mentioned a serena frm slt b4 rite. haha. btw dat's my gd fren's sister. lol.
  4. yeah, that's a gd idea... i been meaning to do that actually. just havent got around to finding e rite thread and find out how to post orders. ok.. thing is, i've already make 2 attempts. however, both ways, i got a faint, scratchy (yet i can make out enuf and i find it's distorted and i think it's clipping too) sound coming out of my basic cmoy running on an njm4556ad. does this haf anything to do wif e particular op amp itself... as in... its not suitable for a cmoy.. i dun have a voltmeter but i tested the output wires around the circuit.. realised that the sound, if connected directly to the input lines... sounds perfectly normal (as in when i listen just directly from my zen.) but put it back where its supposed to flow.. i.e thru e whole circuit, im getting like less than a quarter of the volume.. plus all that bloody distortion. initially, my 2nd attempt was done because i thought there was prbly lousy connections.. my 1st attempt had the aforementioned symptom plus e fact dat only e left channel worked. basically my ground lines (and most of my other wiring) were just solder leads running from point to point.. so could this be the problem? ooh.. it's so sickening. haha. and yet. its the challenge dat keeps me interested. hmm jason... i'll get a board from ya? hmm.. so how do i go about collecting it frm ya..? but meanwhile watever it is, i'm still determined to get this circuit working. so god help me (and appreciate more advise from u guys)
  5. im halfway done wif a blank board.. and i dun haf a feeling it's gonna work. bloody messy. so where do u guys get these boards wif e suitable patterns..?? (like e one at tangentsoft..)
  6. thanks. heh. dun wori. it was all photoshopped. ;p
  7. its ok. i think i answered myself. :/ heh. http://www.freeinfosociety.com/electronics/audio.html
  8. is it plausible... to make your own guitar pedals? those distortion, compressor, delays, n wat nots? anyone here noes the inner workings of such? i've seen explanations of high, low, n band passes in textbooks... but wat abt these?
  9. jasonhanjk: haha. thats the whole prb. nahh. i just orded. jobless. and here's where the problem of buying a new set of 'phones lies. heh. but im realli interested in the amps. guess i'll just give e cmoy a try first. moreover.. according to wat i've read up on the cmoys.. u can prbly adjust the value of R5 later rite.. as in... when i get better 'phones i can just bump down that output impedance resistor, i mean, the purpose of it is just to get rid of e damned hiss anyway rite...? sorta like a noise removal..? rontheman: i listen to metal, yeah i prefer heavy, crisp bass, yet still not drown out the muted hihats and cymbals and stuff.. bitrate.. most of em are at least 160kbits, even for e vbrs. absolute0: hmm.. i dun quite get u.. then like dat.. don't all portable players/discmans/etc haf internal amps? so then wats e whole purpose of headamps den? (and to sidetrack... can i make a variant amp which would prbly be able to drive my normal hifi spkrs? they're rated 8ohms supposedly.. i thought they should be higher since they're... well... bigger?? how much gain shd i look at... i suppose i can prbly read up on other forums and find a specific amp suited for this, but i just thought i'd ask to gain a better understanding on the whole issue.. hope u dun mind..) and... btw... thanks alot guys. realli appreciate this.
  10. hi guys.. just joined few days back. didnt realise there's actualli a local site dedicated for us audiophiles.. this is cool.. well.. im using a creative nomad jb zen xtra and a cheap pair of ($50) sony mdr-033s (the street style clip-ons type - i couldnt find a link... they've discontinued this series anyway) but u guys can prbly gauge the specifications i guess. so... the question is, would any headamp actualli make much of a diff? 1) shd i save up and invest in a better headphone first.. and if so, what do i look out for.. (i tried in vain to find some info on the net regd freq range, impedance, they all basically sound like machine code to me) 2) a headamp is still quite viable.. and then the next question would be, which type of amp prbly suits my need. cmoy/cmoy2/a47? i just picked up a book off the library to learn more about electronics.. hopefully things will start to make more sense. maybe once im more experienced i'll post out some of this theory, it'll prbly help alot of noobs like me get started wif the terminology. and lastly, wat's the deal wif the gain. well.. i sort of figured that its related to the impedance of your 'phones. meaning the higher range of 'phones will prbly need a gain of abt 7-11...something like dat? well then... based on my current setup.. how much gain do i need? and how do i adjust this in terms of the circuitry? put more voltage across the op-amp? phew. i hope i made sense.
