  3. no worries. mbd's friendly. even when you tell them you're still deciding between two cans, they will tell you no worries try it out and hear the difference for yourself
  4. triangle electroacoustique - "musique" ouverture de l'espirit invitation au voyage au reve real good stuff.. its got some tracks which can determine whether a system's up to mark or not
  5. 2100 has one cd67 modded by ts lim, you could ask him abt it, from his impressions, vocals are pretty much richer and forth coming
  6. thanks. i've got tons of black seems that red was a little uncommon in the past
  7. looking for the above, anyone got any recommendations? pls dont tell me del monte thanks
  8. i find that even 2v, for headfi its a big too high, thats why sometimes people dont find the diff between amping and non amping certain headphones of lower resistances. the amp does not provide much gain to the cdp output for a listening volume
  9. in an experiment conducted at home, i found the gain of commercial CD players a little high for headfi. i had been puzzled on how sounds became less bright and more comfortable to listen to I was adding resistances from 50 ohm to 500ohm to the headphone output of an amp, i.e. in series, and listening to the tonal differences. i found that adding 50 ohm/100ohm had very little difference from not adding resistances at all. at low resistances, the volume knob on the amp only needs to be turned a little bit before it becomes too loud, this means that there is very little gain from the amp, due to the large gain of the cd player output. the sound could be described as "cd playerish" but when resistances were added to an insane high of 500 ohms, and the amp having to be driven to be about 70% vol, it sounds entirely different, and bears more of the amp characteristic. maybe if you find amping your low Z headphones not beneficial, try increasing the amp output resistance. there might be some losses but then again, the amp has to be driven decently hard for it to impart its own characteristic to the sound.
  10. 6N11 can be rolled with 6922/ECC88/6DJ8/ecc188 <-- i rolled a lot of this 6N3 should be 5670 similars 6N1 should probably be ecc85 or 6AQ8 going off memory correct me if i m wrong
  11. eros ramazzotti - calma apparente very nice album.. when my friends heard a track or two all wanted a copy
  12. yup.. that was one reason why i decided to take a listen at the planet before it got replaced.. been wanting to listen to the previous planet version ever since the positive rating stereophile gave it in 2000/2001, was the only decently priced cdp rated class B in stereophile ratings the jupiter would have been better.. but too expensive maybe when the apollo's out would go down and take a listen for the fun of it again the difference in the rega design is that the cdp's foot is some rubbery thing that gives the player a bit of isolation, using this aspect over weight i guess. simplicity in design, and correct matching of parts etc for the sound maybe
  13. Now you know why vinyl lovers tend to favour this cdp for their cd collection which usually takes a back seat (way backkkk.....) to their LP collection. Aside from Electrocompaniet EMC-1, the Rega Planet is one of the few cdps that sound rather analogue (bearing all the positive traits). Nonetheless, heavier build and sturdier chassis construction serve to dampen/reduce mechanical feedback (vibration) to equipment. Ultimately for a hifi system, what matters most is how it sounds, all else is secondary. Congrats, U just got yourself a marvellous cdp! thanks yeah i realised it was a little closer to analogue sounding, would have gone LP if not for the high cost of maintenance + expensive discs and limited music selection... i think i've put an end to search for source.. sounds pretty comfortable to me.. exactly what i was looking for..now its time for some speakers changes.. when the wallet permits again.. too many other expenses to consider living in singapore
  14. 1790 with free remote.. remote's abt 100 bucks if buy outside. took it home hooked it up, turned almost all my speakers/amps into a more mellow comfortable sound latest version, super imposed on the earlier rega planet models, but now the cover for the cd is 1 solid piece as compared to a 3 piece jointed in the past. go have a listen at adelphi's cd acoustic! friendly guy 4th level, it was a pretty satisfying experience for me.. partly because vandersteens were used for audition. you can find musical fidelity and marantz on ground floor, and original master at basement b1-46
  15. was on a hunt for a sub 2k cdp today. found the rega planet cdp the most preferred cdp for the budget after listening around today, and surprisingly one of the most mellow cd players i've ever heard. super quiet, clean, and v detailed.. included in the hearing was a 22k reimyo cdp 777.. but unfortunately the setup didnt do it as much justice, as shop was using it as a benchmark against their own mods/diyed stuff.. only a pair of tiny almarro bookshelfs was present comparing against the marantz sa15, musical fidelity 3.2, i felt both cdp to be a little brighter to my liking when listening to the setups they were put in. ended up taking the rega planet home with a thinner wallet...when i first lifted the player when the shop was testing it for me.. i was like OMG??? that is one of the freaking lightest cdp i've ever played with.. felt as though it was empty inside, maybe several kilograms in weight, but nothing compared to the 10+kg marantz/mf/original master cdps. not even gold plated rca!! it got me wondering.. does using superior quality parts, giant transformers, super heavy chassis and blah etc.. give one the best sound? i've been noticing that in diy most people would try to put the best component from caps to resistors to vol pot and everything.. using an established design.. the end product does it give the best sound? or is it just the need for the combination of the right parts? using excessive parts, or excessively sized parts.. do they serve their function or do they serve as a psychological self-reassurance?
  16. ever since the hype at echoloft with a certain speaker & company, and knowing that original products from china are very well made with high quality parts etc, i decided to take another trip to the adelphi.. spent almost my whole day listening to cd players & their setups. its quite difficult to judge a cdplayer most of the time, because the sound is affected by both the speakers used, and amplification, room, interconnects/cables etc. went down at 12.30pm today, decided to stop by COEM. open since last saturday, found mr lemond chua in the midst of hammering something.. furniture not around yet but upon entering the inner-show room, could see quite a lot of MIC products. found the whole family of original cdp driven by a pair of jungson monoblocks + tube pre, on the roseviox nanzidu probably only my second experience with a 360 degree radiating speaker like the nanzidu.. i found the nanzidu a little too hollow sounding for my liking, threw the soundstage too far back, comfortable on the ears, but lacking on the empirical satisfaction. if the voice of a real hot sexy lady talking to you is compared to the roundness of an orange, the sound through the viox was like a very big orange.. but kena squeezed a bit.. not enough juice. (sorry..pun unintended between oranges and lemons) not enough fullness for my liking. ymmv but you could take a listen to it yourself, lemond's quite a friendly guy offline using my own cds, test tracks, opinions on the original family : Leonardo CD A9.3 (flagship model) - best sounding of all, super solid build, top loading transport, very quiet sounding, details were present, cleanest amongst all the original cdp (3k+++) CD A9.8 - very nice looking lid, most laid back soundstage amongst the original family, details were there, also quite quiet (1.2k odd) CD 2008 - MK2 or 3 cant rem, -notable mids, but v bright. have options to change sound filter etc, but still found it a little bright (1.2k odd) CD A8T - least prominent details of the series, reminded me quite much to a marantz sound (850 odd) These cd players come with remote controls that are made of SOLID metal, and weighs a ton. i was surprised/shocked? very heavy remote, might fracture your toe if you drop it.. heavier than my o2 mini in its metal case!.. the cd players each are also very well build very good parts, two transformers each and v heavy as well, averaging probably close to 8-10kg++ per player. well.. these are just my opinions, but you could probably start off with these points being taken into primarily notice when you're down there auditioning them
  17. i found the imp 550 not very good sounding on earphones, but in a hif-set up i had that surprise today.. was fiddling around. at normal settings on earphones it seems to lack bass, biased towards the mid/high, but amplified, everything's decently proportional i m currently using a sj jolida 502a amp.. think rameish here used to use a 202a, and i m also using a vincent integrated amp, german spec, but MIC. used to use a copland ct 401 and an adcom pre/pow combi but sold them recently.. speakers currently a pair of rogers ls4a/2 and a pair of chario academys source currently not v up to standard, have a denon dcd 1015, marantz 5400, marantz cd63 (repaired and just sold.. into its 4th transport.. to ex to maintain)
  18. try using it as a source for a hifi setup. you could be pleasantly surprised. tried it today, performance superceded many commercial hifi cd players that i had/owned b4. very highly detailed, layered sound, with distinct separation, tames the brightness of the setup. settings used were volume 25 out of 40 on the imp-550, no equalizer setting. very small cdp output, the volume of the amps used in test was hovering around 75-80% of max vol. was surprised that a little portable cdp with not very much sampling, simple DAC circuitry etc, could sound so much better than real hifi cd players. might be going down to listen to lemon chua's original master A9.8 cdp soon.. was quoted $1.2k at exhibition.. seriously wondering whether it could sound better than the iriver in this operation. speakers were pushed apart experimentally, and excellent imaging occured at 2metres apart from each other, tilted inwards to face listener.
  19. hd650 a bit thick the band.. might not
  20. i think i'm a into the phase of quitting headfi already.. quite serious of assembling my own ls3/5a, using stirling cabinets. i've got a pair of unused kef t27 tweeters already.. friend posting over from uk just need to get the kef b110 or a better substituent that can handle power much better.. and the crossover done up
  21. oh ya forgive the messiness at the jack area.. used to be very neat.. hehe i added 2 resistors to decrease "hum", tame the highs a little
  22. haha its not too difficult! considering our socket is 200+v already, just need to rectify it to get DC tubes used to be horizontal but i modified to be vertical, sounds better
