  2. :rclxub::rclxub::rclxub:

    isnt this abit too much?

Hehe,yeah... It sounds really kua zhang to spend so much for a tube. But I would say its because of the age of this tube plus the quality of cos.

I got one of this tube too and I would say its quite justifiable for the money. The results is good. I hear more details.Quite a lot of difference I would say from the stock tube. :))

  3. In regards to the previous post about buzzing/static kind of sound from my 708B in previous thread :

Quoted by zer061zer0 : "Whats ur source..?

The last time i uses the ibook i also got the same problem..

i heard a buzz sound, when i remove the 6n1, replace it and it should be gone.

With my cdp as a source i don get the noise anymore, sometime got soft hiss for a while but only detectable by my "SCope" , my gf. she seems to have more sensitive ears to detect very slight noise and was able to pin point it.. "

Hi,my source is my xbox as cd player. Weird as it might sound, but sound quality is quite ok to me. haha... of cos will get a better one when i got money. =)

The buzzing sound I'm afraid is not cause by the inputs. I 80% sure it comes from the power supply section.

  4. I tried and experience the same thing too abou the buzz

ooh,so u hear the buzzing sound from the left ear too?

Actually,I just noticed that, even when i replaced the 6n1,the buzz is still there. Though its much softer, but its still there. I heard it now,(1.08am).I off my fan, everything and press the left sidie near to my ear... and there it is... that static, noise kind of sound.

Can somebody help me clear this noisy thing? Its not obvious, but its there. And I dun wan it to be there. =(

  5. Hi guys, another thing to share. As mentioned in headfi thread about the 6N1 tube that its just there for show, right?I did take it out to experiment. True enough, the amp is still working fine. With nothing bad going on.No effect on the operation.

However,I noticed a soft buzzing, static sound coming out from my left headphone.

I thought it came from the tubes,so I removed and reinstalled it. But the buzzing sounds continue.

To further isolate the problem,I turn up the volume and off. To my surprise, the volume of the static/buzzing sounds doesn't goes up nor go down when i turn the volume knob. The buzzing sound is still there when i turn down the volume knob.

Then I suspect the 6n1 that i removed. So i installed it back and true enough, the buzzing/static sound is gone.

Thus,I conclude that the power supply link to the 6n1 is causing the static/buzzing sound.

Next thing that I wanna do is still,to remove it. But,this time,I'm thinking of either shield it or just cut the wires link to the 6n1.

Which method will be better? Can some experts pls advise me??

  6. Thanks for your response. Really tempted by your advice especially about the potential but I not a DIY person and no electric/electronics/mechanics skills... never used a soldering iron, and furthermore the seller not responded yet. Will wait somemore and see how. :)

haha.... no worries,no soldering need for beginners. I din change and capacitors or any circuitry either.

Just buy some tubes and have fun! :)

If u searched around ebay, theres lots of GEMs tubes out there....

  7. Hi, I just saw in Ebay that the XiangSheng 708B Pre Amp going for current bid of below 40 SGD for a few hours more. Is it worth getting it at that selling price? And is it the same XiangSheng this thread talking about that a fellow forummer recommended me. I was considering between LD2+ and this XS708b since this thread compared... Just want to make sure. Thanks.

WAH! serious? so cheap? most of us i think bought at much higher price than this. Well,I did. And I like this amp alot. Lots of potential. Lots of mods to play around. Great amp. Check with the seller more about the amp before biding. =)

BUy buy buy! Join us,the 708B gang. Hahaha...

  8. Hi Edwin,

I managed to find some cheap rca to mini cables to hook up my ibook to the XS and listening thru my Ad500 heaphones.

The results was not gd, the same track that i used to listen to all my systems, perform really badly, i believe that a cd player would reap remakrable improvement.

I also spent some time hooking up the XS to my philip dvdp (mackie is really against this though),

hook up to a old vcd player, which i believe holds a linear power supply, lastly my marantz cd 63 se.

cd 63 gave the best results lotsa of details, in fact i am hearing more stuff that i never realise before. my old vcd player is the next best though there is some lost to some background music. dvdp perform the 2nd worse a little blurry though.

The ibook was the worst, it seems like the singer is singing behind the instruments and competing with the music. U try playing a cd thru ur ibook and see if what i discover was true.

Do let me know ur findings.

    Regards.

    Hi!

Well,I do connet my IMAC to my headphone before. Basically I seldom listen straight from the cd in the mac becos I feel that its very much louder than i listen in mp3 formats. Thus,I hear more noise and I dun really like it.I normally reipped it into my itunes to be transfered into my ipod. =)

However, back to wat u are saying.... For me,I dun experience the singer being behind the instruments competing with the music etc. The differences between my mac and my xbox cd player are the extra details of the instruments and the whole song, and the enlarged soundstage.Lastly, the volume is higher from the xbox cd player than my mac too. =)

  9. haha okie... so which tube will affect the sound most?

eh,i would say depends on wat u wan to hear most? Quality of sound or the details?

6922 will affect stuffs like soundstage, different "flavours" of sounds.

6n3 will affect stuffs like gain.. therefore.. more details if higher gain? not to mention higher noise level too. =)

Well, above are wat i observed when i changed the tubes. =)

  10. hmm I havent change the 6N1 yet. For power cord I changed it and could hear the difference.

yeah,I will go try change to a better power cord too. =)

    BTW,share with u guys that i encounter....

I was hooking up my xbox to make it as my cd player and after hooking it up,I noticed theres a loud humming noise. Surprisingly when i touch the interconnects that goes into the 708B,the noise disappear. So i connected some wires and short it to ground and now the noise is gone for good. Hehe....

  11. I havent compare it with with the LD2+ but seems that the general opinion is that the XS is better. And seems that most of the pple in this thread are XS users?

I remember Jaben has one LD2+ ? Maybe one day we can bring our XS there to do some comparisons

i'm quite curious to find out the differences between using 6N3P vs Western ELectric 2C51.

And also not to forget the Siemens tubes :D

My 708B is currently fitted with the Siemens tubes and WE 2c51. =)

Happy combi, but still not very satisfied. I wan more!!

    Haha...

  12. so that means i've bought some light bulbs

Well, some guys in headfi mentioned got difference leh... do u find that theres a improvemnt in the sound quality?

I do know that adjusment to the power supply can have big difference in sound quality, hence people spend big bucks on good power cord etc.....

  13. hey, sounds having fun rolling tubes, thought doing caps upgrade??

I am interested to change the caps to better audiophile quality. Can recommend some and where to get pls??

BTW,I feel that the bass of this amp is not really punchy and loud enough. How do I improve on the bass??

  14. I've replaced the 6N3 with the Western Electric 2C51. Havent had much listening time with it yet but it was pretty much like what edwinyw had posted earlier.

But I am enjoying this XiangSheng amp alot now. I think i will be selling away the SOHA soon :D

hey yO`! Great for u. Happy listening and look out for more surprises that u can hear now. =)

  15. the uncle told me can use 6922.... but cannot leh...

maybe have to look for a 6N1P EB as suggested on headfi.

I guess have to get it from eBay? Maybe we can share? Anyone else interested?

u mean 6922 to replace your 6n1 tube? that wun work.

Yah,I saw on the headfi they used those military grade tubes.

  16. Hi,

can anyone tell me how to remove the casing. I unscrew the top cover but was unablt to remove it.

As for connecting the mac, what cables did you use..?

3.5mm to rca.. hows the quality..

I'm using the cable I got from LHS,Sim Lim Tower, the place which some forumers here recommended.

But I believe my cable isn't that fantastic.. Its Furutek high grade OFC kind of cable.Quality wise... It doesn't really sounds the kind of transparent to me. But its definately an upgrade from the normal cable I got from Harvey Norman or those kind of normal shop.

  17. Sounds great :DD

How much is the Western electric 2C51 ?

    You didn't change the 6N1 ?

This Western Electric is quite ex to me. It cost $90 for 1.

I din change the 6N1 cos I wanna change the tubes slowly to test out the effects on the tubes.

Perhaps sooner or later I will change it.Somehow, feels that the stock tubes aren't really that good enough.

Hee... Or maybe its just me.

Anyway recommended tube for 6N1 though? ;)

  18. Yup,I have changed a couple of the stock tubes....

First tubes I changed is the 6N11 becos the left channel tube kind of burnt out... it goes softer and softer after some time of power up and listening.

I went to Well Audio at Bugis and the friendly uncle recommended me a pair of Siemens E88CC. It has indeed improved the details quite tremendously.I have never heard such nice strings and details highs before. The soundstage has enlarged too. Cool!

Next, I changed the 6N3 to Western electric 2C51 tube made in the 50s. It has further improved the details and soundstage even further!! I hear even more smaller background detail! Eg, I hear the soft organ played in the background in Coldplay's Speed of the Sound which I never hear before and didn't even know it exists!

I'm a happy listener with my 708B. However I'm sure that theres more potential to this little amp. Hope the 708B's owner can provide more info on improving this amp further.

I'm using a pair of Grado's SR80 which I feel has already been driven to its max already.Wondering if 701 will be good match to 708B. =)

My system is simply plugged from my Mac to the Amp and to my headphones.
