  1. To allow me to ignore TV Mobile (oh, how I hate that infernal device :furious::grr: )

seriously... even if my shuffle is out of juice, i'll still wear my K81s just to block out that damned source of noise pollution. :yuck: I'd rather listen to the engine roar than TV Mobile. I'm seriously considering buying a pair of ear-plugs so that I have a choice to NOT listen to TV Mobile. :gun2:

Did I mention I hate TV Mobile?

  2. I think the K81DJs are terrific :)

sound quality is good, trebles are crisp and clear, bass is tight after burn-in. they provide enough isolation to allow me to enjoy my music on public transport.

The so-called 'death grip' on the head mellows as you wear it, leaving the headphones tight, but reasonably comfortable. you'll never need to worry about it accidentally falling off though ;)

    give it a try lah

to dragonboy: these phones really benefit from burn-in: treble clears up and bass tightens. a fresh-from-the-box set sounds poor compared to a 2 week old burned-in set. There's also the 'curse' of the central foams. removing the foams changes the sound profile dramatically, giving crisper treble and lowering bass boomy-ness.

  3. haven't tried the SJ5, but i've tried the SJ3 (similar, i guess). Sound quality wise, it's a no-contest. K81 wins. Comfort wise, SJ3 is more comfortable. Both are supra-aural but the SJ3 comes with significantly less clamp force.

on the other hand, K81 can be 'seasoned' to become more comfie. search for advice in sgheadphones or at head-fi. plenty of people have posted about it (or is it mainly me? *grin*)

also, this thread probably belongs to the portable forum. can't see any1 using either of these phones for home use...

  4. so many questions...

    Is there such a headphone?

in a word, no. you'll have to give up some of your requirements!

Is there any shop in SG that allows u to try a wide range of headphones before you buy?

Stereo Electronics at Causeway Point and Jaben Network at Adelphi are the places to go. In fact, pls go and bug Aron (at Stereo) and/or Wilson (at Jaben) directly as your questions are too many to be easily answered here.

I *know* they'll be able to find something that will make you happy (although it probably wouldn't be what you started with) :)

  5. Try the online Apple Store. Go to the 'Special Deals' section on the right, select 'Refurbished iPod'. The ones that say 'Apple Certified iPod with Colour Display' should be 4G.

btw, even though it says 'refurbished', there's a good chance that you'll be getting a brand new iPod. i've bought stuff from the refurb section before and they've been spotless. i think apple just uses this section to dump old models... :)

  6. hmm... guess i should defend the K81s a bit.

Clamp force can be lessened with judicious stretching. Properly broken in, i'd say my K81s are fairly comfy. Also, i *never* have to worry about them falling off :)

Details comes with 1) removing the centre foams in the earcups, 2) running in. If all you've heard is a fresh-from-box unit, then yes, you'd think that K81 lacks details.

  7. hmm... more info is needed before we can give out advice:

budget - ES7 costs about $200... is that the max/min of what you wanna pay?

usage - is it for use at home? or when you go out? do you need it to block out sound? do you plan to use an headphone amplifier?

you said u want good looking phones. well... ES7 is a good choice if you like the shiny-shiny. but taste is a very subjective thing :)

As for where to go, Stereo Electronics at Causeway Point and Jaben at Adelphi are the 2 best places to go, try and buy headphones.

  8. Hey everyone,

I need a way to record voice for a fairly long time (over 30 min). i'm not really keen on buying another DAP that comes with recording function (coz i've already got more iPods than people in my household  ), but if i have to, then i guess i got no choice lah. can you recommend something that's small, and cheapish...?

alternatively, if there's a way to record using 1G nano, pls let me know too :)

(or maybe i should just buy one of them mini tape recorders?)

  9. i could still hear some ambient noise: ... and music from someone's earphones quite some distance away. is that normal?

on 2nd thots, if you can hear someone else's music, it suggests to me that you are not wearing your mylars properly. i've seen people on buses wearing their canalphones such that they are pointing up, ie, not firmly stuck into their ears...
